Pikmin 3 combines RTS elements, direct action and light puzzles. The result is a quite endearing scifi-adventure despite some control issues and bland splitscreen multiplayer. There's also no real need to develop special tactics for bosses. [Aug 2013]

Pikmin 3 is a greatly balanced, challenging at the right moments, original, adorable, and above all continually entertaining real-time strategy game, making you smile instantly. It's suited for all the gamers of all ages, and for both genders. [Issue#232]

Pikmin 3 is a cute game with plenty of soul. It takes the concept from the two previous games one step further with the way it combines tactics with roleplaying. In terms of graphics this is probably the most beautiful game the world has ever seen on a Nintendo console.

Pikmin 3 manages to combine stressful strategy with relaxing environments and cute creatures. The game is a great example of the Wii U:s capability of making improvements to existing gameplay formulas. Pikmin 3 is charming, stressful, cozy and challenging.

A brilliant HD adventure that stops short of delivering a truly definitive Wii U experience. [Oct 2013, p.66]

Nintendo, how typical. It gives you a game that looks like a child's play. However, it gets you immediately, and it won't release you until you exploit everything that's hidden inside.

Pikmin 3 might not be the game that gets people rushing to buy a Wii U, but it certainly should be.

It's clear that Pikmin 3 was not designed with the GamePad in mind. Even in our review guide, Nintendo recommends playing with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Controlling the virtual cursor becomes much easier the Wii Remote, and alleviates many of the camera control issues you may face when playing with just the GamePad or Pro Controller.

Pikmin 3 is the game that should have launched the Wii U. Its combination of calming atmosphere and strategic gameplay create a unique and mesmerising experience while it lasts. While it may be over too soon for some players it still remains by far the best first party game currently available for Nintendo’s latest system.

Sure, this ‘puzzle’ may sound really basic, but it exists to help familiarize you with the game’s mechanics, and rest assured, complexity and challenge soon go up several notches.

From beginning to end, this is an adventure that keeps us stuck and that makes us even more attached to these small plants that lend their name to the game.

Who would have thought it has been nearly 10 years since the Last Pikmin game and Nintendo have a real winner on their hands with Pikmin 3 that has not only streamlined the gameplay but seriously improved it. Best of all, the games looks gorgeous in HD and Pikmin have never looked this great! Add in some great single player challenges, multiplayer fun and you’ll be playing this game for a long time.

Yes, it's most certainly "just" more of the Pikmin we came to know during the GameCube era, but after nine years on the shelf, coming back to a Pikmin game this solidly designed quickly reminded me why I had such affection for this series in the first place.

Pikmin 3's release in Japan gave the Wii U a significant sales boost in that territory, and it's easy to see why. A wholesome yet colourful and engaging title, Pikmin 3 has wide appeal, and a great multiplayer mode to boot.
  16. If you’re looking for one of the most unusual and just plain fun games of the summer, you won’t find better.

Surprisingly engaging and addictive, the strategic elements are challenging and it's just so darned irresistibly cute to boot. [Sept 2013, p.72]

Just like other Nintendo’s first-party offerings for Wii U, Pikmin 3 carefully walks the same twice-beaten path. And it is refreshingly stern with the players – colorful vistas and charming characters hide a hardcore game.

The new flying pikmin are a nifty twist for how they break the level design.

Pikmin 3 is a fantastic game that oozes with charm. The levels are short enough that they scream “just one more day”. It also helps that game play is so tight, and the design feels so good. While it may not be my most anticipated franchise from the Nintendo stables, I cannot help but fall in love with the quirky Koppites and their quest for food. Pikmin 3 is one of the best reasons to own a Wii U so far.

Pikmin 3 is quintessential, classic Nintendo, the Nintendo we know and love, the one that makes us buy every console regardless of our doubts and hang-ups. It’s not the killer app the system is begging for, but if you have shelled out for Nintendo’s new console it’s the best exclusive currently available.

Pikmin 3 is a solid sequel. It improves on the mechanics of the previous games and includes a good amount of enjoyable content.

Pikmin 3 would be something of a rare gem in any console’s library, never mind the fledgling Wii U’s.

It may not be the game that Wii U desperately needs right now, but Pikmin 3 is still one of the most interesting and fresh gaming experiences you'll enjoy this Summer.

If you’re a Pikmin fan, pluck the cash from your wallet, hand it to Nintendo, and enjoy the best Pikmin experience around. Just don’t be shocked if you’re left expecting a bit more in the way of story.

Clocking in at around 10 hours, Pikmin 3's solo campaign isn't as lengthy or as continuously challenging as those of its predecessors, but the number of excellent enhancements made to a already sound gameplay model indisputably make it the Wii U's best game to date.

A major improvement over its predecessors--of which I wasn't the biggest fan. If it could win over a skeptic like me, I imagine that people who loved the first two games will be thrilled by the way this game keeps the series' heart intact but improves on the level design and gameplay.

It does exactly what a sequel should do as it retains the roots of an already great game while expanding out into new exciting territory that still feels natural.

Pikmin 3 isn’t the savior of the Wii U, and the lack of online play is a major bummer, but it’s still an overall satisfying experience, and another win for Miyamoto. It’s cute, it’s tactically deep, and if you can find a local friend to play with, it’ll last you a long, long while.

While Miyamoto and company certainly made us wait quite a bit, I think you’ll agree it was worth it for Pikmin 3. It’s easily one of the best titles on the Wii U, and something that every Nintendo fan should certainly plan to pick up.

You can immediately tell from the get-go Nintendo had some passion making this game. The smooth game play is noticed right away. All of a sudden, you begin to notice all the layers to the game which provide an in-depth experience that is very unique and satisfying. One needs to experience Pikmin3 first hand to really understand. I've been unsatisfied with many new game purchases over the last 5 years, not with this one. Well worth the purchase! Oh, and it has great graphics. Thanks Nintendo. Full Review »

Ok so the controls in this game aren't a problem but it is starting to look like even Nintendo themselves are struggling to think of any fun or practical uses for the Wii U gamepad. With this being a RTS I opted for old Wii remote and nun-chuck controls as they basically act like a mouse. The gamepad sat in it's cradle being used only as a map (and not a very useful one). Nintendo have created a needlessly convoluted control scheme which turns your T.V. and gamepad into a giant DS. The problem with that is it's not compact like a handheld console and actually takes quite a bit of getting used to looking at one screen then another when your trying to get immersed in a game.

Like I say though the controls aren't really a problem, what is a problem is the mission structure and lack of depth to the campaign mode. Levels are small, Nintendo's solution is to impose short time limits by dividing your exploration up into days. Before you've had a chance to really do anything the day ends and your forced to watch the same cut scene and read the same dialogue at the end of every day. Very soon a feeling of repetition ensues. That feeling of repetition soon ended though with the game being just 11 hours long and having no real replay-ability.

That's just the story mode though. Thankfully Pikmin 3 also has a challenge mode that is much more engaging. Trying to beat your high score on a challenge or boss fight feels more rewarding and satisfying. Uploading your score also means you can see how well your doing compared to other players. Graphics, music and presentation are all excellent as you'd expect. Pikmin 3 is a good game, not great not essential. Even on a console with no games.
