Star Fox Guard may be the most fun I’ve had playing a video game all year.

Star Fox Guard is smart and funny. A clever way to set up a different kind of tower defense game, at a reasonable price.

Nintendo set out to build an experience centered around the GamePad with Star Fox Guard, and the result is a great little experiment — if a wee bit overwhelming.

This is a great surprise, and we've really enjoyed our time with it. It is true, however, its formula gets old after a few hours, but considering its price, it's a good choice.

Under normal circumstances a title like this wouldn’t have been worth a $60 price tag, but free is an entirely different story. It has a surprising amount of content, but ultimately suffers from lack of variety.

The game perhaps could have done with more tower defence elements to extend the idea further, but as a standalone package it's a compelling little gem that does well in framing the GamePad's benefits and is worth a try.

Every time Star Fox tries to do something out of its space-combat comfort zone it fails. Star Fox Guard sadly continues this tradition of games that make you go “meh” when Fox and the gang step away from their Arwing cockpits.

And this was the bonus game. Let's see. Great control set up. No forced Motion controls. Simple to learn difficult to master. It's addicting.

The Status of better than the game it came free with may well change if they patch in an no motion control mode for Starfox zero. Which wouldn't be entirely unwelcome.

It's a simple, but fast paced tower defense game that still takes lots of skill and strategy.

Some flaws with the game is that even though its a simple game, they still try to complex it a little too much with a "story" and other features when all that needed to be done was level waves.

All around, this game is a great bonus game. But why is the bonus game better than the main game?

This is a very repetitive - and very easy - mini-game.
It might be suitable for young children, but (otherwise) it's not really worth your time.

The online / multi-player part is useless. I've tried battling half a dozen user-created squads and they were all about as difficult as spelling the title of the game. This is no surprise, since the level editor is very limited. Personally, I never bothered to upload, because I couldn't be bothered putting any effort into my squads.

The single player game is entertaining in short bursts.
But, it's not worth the AU$19.50 I paid to download it.

I bought a second hand copy of Star Fox Zero for $44 on eBay.
It hasn't arrived yet. But, I can't imagine it will be as disappointing as Guard.
And, as far as value for money goes, I can sell it after I finish playing.
So - in the end - it will only cost me about $10.

Giving this a high rating because it's cheap doesn't make any sense.
The same logic isn't applied to free-to-air television shows versus exclusive cable shows.
And, honestly, I don't think it is cheap. It should cost about AU$8-$10.

Don't let the rating fool you.
    It isn't a good game.
    It is barely okay.
