  • Summary: The clock has stopped around the turn of the 19th century, and humankind has prematurely blown itself to bits. The remaining scraps are huddling in caves beneath the surface, and steam-powered robots have taken over the Wild West.

The core of Steamworld Dig is a simple one, yet with the charm & wit it possesses really hooks you in.

But seriously, this is an ideal game for this platform, and great to just pick up and play at any time.
  3. This gem is worth picking up again, even if it's just to gawk at the HD revamp. [Issue#116, p.90]

The game is addictive and a lot of fun. What the Wii U offers over and above the others is that you can play it both on the TV or solely on the gamepad.

If you already own it, I wouldn’t recommend picking this up even if you are fancying a second playthrough and own it elsewhere (why waste the money on a game you already have?) but for first timers, go for it. It’s fun, well made, and hopefully if it does well, we’ll see some sequels set in their weird post-human no-electricity world.

Minor annoyances - more noticeable after four ports of the game - prevent the game from ever reaching indie perfection, but this is an experience not to be missed.

Even without offering a reason for veteran players to return, SteamWorld Dig for Wii U is a great opportunity for those that still haven't experienced this good game from Image & Form.

Not that the premise or opening of the game are badly done, but it just feels a bit slow at first. The basic rhythm of the game -- dig down, bring stuff up, upgrade, head back down -- is surprisingly rewarding and addictive as you progress, mostly because the gameplay is very tight and the environments are well done. Good music too. The puzzles are well designed and the level of difficulty seems about right to keep you progressing without frustration. Fun and smart. Expand

Mining for ores in the early game is a bit tedious, but once the game ramps up and you get used to the mechanics, it gets fun. But then, it ends...pretty early. At most you'll get about 7 hours of gameplay if you're trying to find every nook and cranny and buy every upgrade. There's no NG+, so that's it. Beat the game. I'm not even sure if there's multiple endings, but I don't see a reason to play through it again. Expand
