    Devil's Cartel feels like a hollowed-out version of previous Army of Two games. The distinctive edges have been sanded down, creating something that’s not just generic but unrelated to what went before.

    There's nothing here to make a mark: no creativity on display, no clever competitive modes, no sense of accomplishment. There's only a seven-hour campaign, optional missions in which you try to keep the overkill meter consistently replenished, and the knowledge that in a month, you won't remember having played Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel.

    On one hand, the lack of polish and the glitches cause me to give the game a less-than-stellar score. On the other hand, I can’t deny that my co-op partner and I were laughing and enjoying ourselves for the large majority of the campaign. As a mindless co-op shooter, it delivers.

    If you haven't had the chance to play the first two games, do that instead. If you've already gone through those titles, rent this if you feel like blowing through something disposable for an afternoon.

    The Devil's Cartel is functional and fuss-free, a game that delivers the expected genre tropes with as little imagination and as much bluster as possible. It's not a bad game, but nor does it have anything beyond basic mechanical competence to mark it out as "good" - and even that competence wobbles more than it should.

    Among real disasters and really interesting ideas Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel is exactly what was expected. We face the usual Army of Two, dedicated to less demanding gamers.

    Devil’s Cartel seems to accomplish exactly what it set out to do, offering an intense, impressive two-player co-op experience that’s heavily customizable and replayable. While it won’t likely scratch the itch of those looking for a more traditional shooter game--namely, competitive online multiplayer--it’s an original concept set inside familiar trappings.

    Nothing about the game (other than the bugs) is particularly bad, but there is very little to recommend here either. As a single-player experience there are much better ways to spend your cash, and even in cooperative play I’d only recommend it pulled from the bargain bin.

    A lot of what comprises Army of Two: The Third is total crap, and yet I had a lot of fun playing it. We don't know how EA has done it. They probably don't know how they've done it. But they have. And I'm glad they did.

    In Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel you shoot Mexican drug-lords for about seven hours straight. This bland task becomes monotonous after a while and having a partner along for the ride unfortunately doesn't really matter. Just like other games in the series, it doesn't manage to escape the bowels of mediocrity.

    A prime example of a gamified action film from the eighties. The story is only an excuse for bloodshed and the game is far from unconventional. Yes, I've seen this before at least dozens of times, but then again, there's always room for some good old-fashioned pointless violence. [May 2013]

    On the surface all the elements that made the former Army of Two games such interesting experiences are still there. But the deeper you look the more superficial they get. Resident Evil 6 might have failed because the vision couldn’t be executed. But here you’ll miss the vision in the first place. This is a run-of-the-mill shooter with big explosions and little depth.

    All in all, Devil's Cartel just differs too much from the winning formula for those fans of the first two games, and for the newcomers, there are better co-operative games on the market for your dollar.

    Overall you’ll find that Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel can be a reasonably fun way to spend 8 hours of your life, but I don’t know if many people will make the effort to play through it again. It is a frantic shooter that challenges nothing more than your trigger finger and never advances past mindless slaughter.
  23. The sole selling point of Devil's Cartel is the fact that you can blaze through it in a haze of blood and brick dust in the company of somebody else. It's never bad enough to truly offend, but it's never good enough to justify its status as a full-price game.

    The odd thing is that while Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel is clearly not a well-executed game, it still manages to be fun with a friend. It's quick, stop-and-pop gameplay with carnage and explosions aplenty. Every awkward moment and terrible line of dialogue is a potential laugh -- or two -- so it's not the worst choice for a weekend rental.

If you’re looking for a shoot’em up to play with a friend while chatting over all the time... please look somewhere else for something more affordable.

    A mediocre third person shooter game that brings nothing new. On the contrary, it gets rid of the essential qualities that have made the previous installments successful. Furthermore, Alpha and Bravo are much more boring companions than Salem and Rios, and their Mexican crusade is lifeless as well.

    Playing with a friend over Xbox LIVE or in split-screen mode can be fun, but that's about it. The Devil's Cartel is an obsolete game that belongs to a long-gone gaming era.

    Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel is a simple shooter that's made to play with a friend. You'll compose your own weapons, converse about tactics and do this for eight hours or so until you've finished the campaign. It's a wonderful co-op game that falls short, mostly due to the annoying variation between dumb action and emotional moments. The lack of polish and modes make this a game that is truly only fit for those who only play co-op games.

    A disappointment. One great problem is the loss of the series' personality, but it's nothing compared to the lack of any play modes other than the 8-hour campaign. EA likely bet all of its money on co-op, but there are better games around with that feature.

    Overall I think there are far too many issues with this game to advise you to go out and purchase it. It is good fun in dribs and drabs so if you had a friend to play it with a rental will probably do you, but the severe lack of inspiration from the developers is evident throughout. It just feels like such a lazy game and it’s clear that EA wanted to capitalise on the fans of Army of Two. Sadly.

    Sometimes a plan just doesn’t come together and it’s clear with Army of Two The Devil’s Cartel that the series has no future beyond this generation of games. It is a shame to see the potential this series once had thrown in the garbage. There’s nothing to find of interest in this final entry in the franchise so the most sincere advice I can give to you, dear reader, is this: move on and play something else.

    Gears of War may have its detractors, but whilst it opted for over-the-top machismo and a sci-fi setting, The Devil’s Cartel offers an approximation of banter between its two leads and a plot that is squandered after a promising start. Worse still, ludicrous plot twists are thrown into the mix late on which will both confuse and annoy Army of Two veterans.

    The core gameplay mechanics in The Devil’s Cartel seldom fall short of base competency, but they never really rise above it, either. With almost no combat variety, wonky cover mechanics, and cringe-worthy writing, it’s the sort of mindless, throwaway shooter you’ll have forgotten a half-hour after the credits roll.

    There's no thought or consideration visible in The Devil's Cartel. The story moves in fits and starts, with a dozen logical (more merciful) points of conclusion and no clear reason to keep going, other than more shooting.

    The first couple of Army of Two games were fun diversions that never took themselves too seriously while delivering solid co-op action. The Devil's Cartel delivers a drab, uninspired shooter where co-op feels like the secondary objective to rushing an average game out the door. Visceral can and has done much better, so the shoddy nature of Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel leaves you wondering why it was made at all.

    Ultimately, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel is easy to pick up and fun to play, but generally lacks in distinction. The co-op centered gameplay is a neat trick, but it doesn't do enough with the co-op mechanics to really set itself apart.

    It's short, not particularly easy on the eyes and loses elements you'd expect from a new Army of Two game. There being only a meager handful of 'Contracts' missions to keep you busy after you beat the campaign, speaks volumes about the expectations EA had for this going in. It was always going to be a dumb, dirty – and ultimately one-off – weekend affair. As such, The Devil's Cartel is just about passable.

    There are a lot of faults here – the messy map design, the awkward cover system, the surprising co-op fumble – but Army Of Two: The Devil’s Cartel manages to make its core action of shooting things engaging and fun, and that’s what will pull you through the game.

    The Army of Two games have always been overshadowed by Call of Duty and Gears of War and the other shooter juggernauts, but they had unique co-op gameplay elements and a goofy charm that set them apart. Both of these things are mostly missing in The Devil’s Cartel, and that’s a damn shame.

    It's not a perfect game by any means. The cover system tends to be sticky, there are some graphical issues like screen tear and texture pop,It's not a perfect game by any means. Everything from the amazing customization (masks, load outs, etc.) to the insane destructible environments, provided you use the brutal overkill mode, is just breathtaking. Its not a masterpiece, by any sense, the story and characters are pretty mediocre and there are some graphical glitches throughout. These cons however, are vastly overshadowed by solid controls, equally up to par co-op action, and countless ways to differentiate your T.W.O operative.
