It is not about the known camera issues that cause several headaches or the short story. It is not about what this game should be and what has become of it. Itʼs about the very essence of gaming, the essence that draws a permanent smile on your face while playing this masterpiece!

Even if you have played it before, you will be amazed how good it still is. It is a wonderful trip down memory lane. Here is to hoping we get to finally see the sequel we have been waiting for all these years.

If you're among the majority of gamers who didn't play Beyond Good & Evil when it originally came out for PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube, you have no excuse for passing up its new form.

Beyond Good & Evil gives gamers a timeless cast filled with originality, depth, and memorable lines including the "Chili con carne" battle-cry.

Wacky characters, inspired design and engrossing gameplay make Beyond Good & Evil HD as relevant today as it was eight years ago. Do yourself a favour and grab a copy.

    A well-executed rerelease of a great game.

Beyond Good & Evil was ahead of its time in 2003, and it fits 2011 like a glove. This is still a great game that's unquestionably deserving of your $10 – especially if you missed it the first time. Admittedly, it's showing its age, but it's less like a disgusting chunk of old cheese and more like a glass of fine wine.

To write off Beyond Good & Evil on the count of such trivial issues, though, would be folly. Michel Ancel's seminal action adventure remains one of the wittiest, most charming and intelligent games on the market, and you absolutely owe it to yourself to give it a go if you haven't already.

A great porting of a beautiful game, and a great deal for its price too: if you never played it before, it's a must buy. And even if you already apreciated it seven years ago, you'll really enjoy going back to Hillys in its revamped look.

A number of factors made this game a sales loser when it came out, but the passionate cult that gave it its high-quality reputation has a legitimate chance to grow now with improved graphics and a budget price as a downloadable game.

It isn't often that you can compare videogames with wine by saying they get better with age, but in this circumstance it works. The unique blend of gameplay mechanics make Beyond Good and Evil a game unlike anything available for the 360 today.

It's not a perfect game - there are some flaws to its core mechanics, but the overall experience is so much greater than those few faults that you owe it to yourself to at least give it a shot - especially at $10.

If you have never played Beyond Good & Evil, then you owe it to yourself to see why those that had, would go on and on about it. If you have played the game before and loved it, then you will be wanting that teased and rumoured sequel that appeared to be dead in the water. Buy this, show Ubisoft that we are ready for a new game. Regardless of anything, buy it because you know you want to play it again in glorious HD.

This is a title that should have done a lot better in sales, but unfortunately because of the circumstances it didn't become as popular as it should have. Critical acclaim sometimes doesn't cut it, but I sure hope with an HD upgrade and being available to download will bring this great title to some more gamers to thoroughly enjoy, if not for the first time but for nostalgia's sake.

The game maintains its virtues intact: good plot, great gameplay and an attractive artistic design. The technical improvements also help it narrow the time gap between today and the original's release.

An undeniable classic - and, for once, one not showing the ravages of age. If only the letters "H" and "D" signified something more than numbers. [Issue#69, p.102]

Most pleasing of all is the cost. At a time when many downloadable games are sliding up to the 1200 MS Points barrier, the 800-Point price tag for this much-beloved classic shows that a little generosity can go a long way.
  19. The passion that BG&E inspires makes it too easy to gloss over the flaws - it'll take you a while to get used to the hyper-sensitive camera, the acting is choppy, and Jade's fighting style is uninspired. But this is a game in which killing comes second to the story, puzzles, the world, and the characters - it's 10-15 hours of genuinely compelling pleasure.

Beyond Good & Evil has been lauded ever since its first release, and is the defining example of a game that didn't get the commercial success it deserved. It's still a fantastic game, and at this price its one of the best digital purchases you can make.
  21. 90
A great remake of an overlooked classic, and one of the few games that can survive close comparison with The Legend Of Zelda and retain a style all of its own.
  22. A monster adventure at a stunner of a price. People who don't buy this shouldn't call themselves gamers.
  23. 85
But 10 bucks will net you a fulfilling and thoughtful odyssey, just in time to leave you salivating for the long-awaited sequel. [May 2011, p.78]

And while some of the more unique aspects of Beyond Good and Evil might not seem so unique by today's measure – there is no denying that this game is a masterpiece that should not be missed. Get this game, it may be the best eight bucks you spend this week.

At a mere 800 Microsoft Points, it's hardly a difficult financial decision. If you've never played it before, we can't recommend it enough. Even with its faults, even if you've played it in the past, do yourself a favour and have another go of this much loved classic.

Beyond Good & Evil gets a second chance and grabs it with both hands. The game hasn't lost it's former glory and still takes you on a great adventure.

Beyond Good & Evil deserved this second chance, as it's one of the best games we've seen in the last few years. There are not many improvements here, but overall is a great experience in a genre that is not as popular as it used to be. Charming characters, great storytelling and gameplay make for an unforgettable game.

Given the lower price and upped quality of presentation, what was already a great experience is that much better now – so get behind the original Beyond Good & Evil and see what you (probably) missed out on.

Some might see it as a way to get people's attention for the much-talked sequel. Others as a way to correct a marketing mistake. Personally I see both affirmations as correct. Still, this HD return is certainly worth checking out.

Beyond good & Evil is far from being a true masterpiece in gaming history, but it's still a really good game that, back then, deserved way more commercial success that it actually got.

The HD upgrade for Beyond Good & Evil is an unmistakable improvement. The conversion isn't quite perfect though. In places, you'll still find blocky textures, odd visual glitches, menus floating beyond the edge of the world, and places where you can fall right through the geometry.

No doubt inspired by Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series, Beyond Good & Evil HD is an ambitious title that deserves to be played. It may not be groundbreaking today, but it is a key title on any essential list of video game gems. If you can force yourself to adapt to the controls, the experience is worth the hassle.

BG&E HD is an easy game to recommend, regardless of whether or not you played the original release. It's not quite as mind-blowing as it was back in the day – looking back, a lot of good games surfaced in 2003, but originality wasn't too high on the agenda – yet it remains entirely enjoyable and charming throughout, bar a few irritating hovercraft sections.

Now that time has caught up, it may not still be ahead of the curve but has at least aged gracefully and nonetheless remains a fun, genre-spanning sci-fi romp… with a bit of a dodgy camera.

Whether or not you've played it before is irrelevant, Beyond Good and Evil HD demands your attention. So, where's that sequel?
  42. Mar 12, 2011

This is an eight year old game and it shows, with frequent camera issues that rear their head at the most inopportune moments, but to be too critical would be to do the game a disservice given its charm.
  43. 80
There are plenty of downloadable games with the same high ambitions as Beyond Good & Evil HD, but very few of the offers a full retail experience. Sure, it isn't entirely fresh anymore, but this adventure is recommended for everyone.

8 year after the first release, Beyond Good & Evil remains one of the best action games of this decade. A well balanced gameplay, deep and fascinating storytelling and an impressive art desing gave to this on-demand content the status of "must have".

A good chance to replay a classic, in a shiny new HD version.
  46. 80
Beyond Good & Evil HD remains a triumph of exploration and adventure. Sure, it's wildly imperfect by current-gen standards, but it can still teach today's powerhouse blockbusters a thing or two in terms of gameplay design and the creation of immersive worlds.

The HD remake of Beyond Good and Evil is as good as the older version. The game is still awesome and deserves your love. If you are looking for a great 10/15 hours long adventure for few money, this is your choice.

This action-adventure game offers a perfect mix of gameplay elements, although each of them separately come of as a bit stale. Combine this mix with an intriguing story, and you'll end with a meal that'll fill you up the brim, which will likely be toppled by the delicious HD-dip sauce that comes with it.

Beyond Good & Evil HD could undoubtedly have gone to further lengths in modernizing this cult title, with reworked textures and 3D models, but its qualities remain as effective as ever. A title full of variety, dense and accessible, combining all sorts of game mechanics for an adventure with a unique atmosphere.

As an XBLA release, concessions like simple graphics or a rough edge here and there aren't exactly gamebreakers. Beyond Good & Evil isn't a short game by today's standards, either. You'll get about ten hours or so out of the quest, much more than you'd squeeze out of comparable download releases today.

Beyond Good and Evil HD delivers real gaming magic, despite the outdated camera. We're praying that the sales are good enough this time to keep the sequel in production, because we don't want this tale to end any time soon.

Beyond Good & Evil HD boasts a terrific visual update, and despite a slow start, feels as good to play now as it did eight years ago. While not the narrative tour de force you may recall it being, the game manages to draw one in and keep the player involved with a charming game world and a strong, atypical female protagonist.

The new character models and HD visuals do a great job of bringing Hillys to life, but only serve to contrast how far game design has come in eight years. We're more critical of camera issues and interface problems these days, spoiled by the likes of Uncharted and Mass Effect. Considering the effort gone into revamping the character models, it strikes me as odd that Ubisoft hasn't addressed these issues too.
  56. Mar 1, 2011

As much as I've come to re-love Beyond Good & Evil, the niggling issues stand out as possible evidence that Ubisoft might not be willing to invest more time in Jade than is strictly necessary. It's a shame, and I hope that's not really the case, because this is a yesteryear project that deserves the trilogy it never got.

Beyond Good & Evil HD is a visually lovely update to what many consider an ignored classic. There is much to be admired about how the heroine Jade is presented and how the game mixes a plethora of genres with some success, but the nonexistent difficulty curve and simplistic mechanics make it hard to recommend for fans of action-rpgs.

If you haven't played the original on the PS2, or Gamecube this is a must buy. For $10.00 this is a steal. I recommend this game to anyone who likes action games. Obviously the gameplay is still the same, which isn't bad from a nostalgic standpoint. The graphics are smoothed over and essentially you are given the pleasure of playing this under-appreciated classic. Whether it holds up by today's standards is arguable, but that's not what you should be looking for with this game. It was great when it came out and it is honestly one of the best games you've never played. Remember that thing you used to have when you were a kid...what was it? .....ah yes, fun! Well that's this game. It's good clean, imaginative fun. Enjoy it. Full Review »

As a kid I played this game obsessively, but in the end I was rubbish at being sneaky, didn't understand what was going on and had an overwhelming sense of achievement when I photographed a dead whale. Still somehow Beyond Good and Evil spoke to me and has made me regret the ridding of the gamecube for a long while. So I bought an xbox, purely to play this and hope for a sequel. An amazing soundtrack, brilliantly thoughtful plot and wonderful gaming style has made this impressive action puzzler one of the best overlooked games of the noughties. I seriously recommend you give it a try, and a full game for only a few quid makes it immensely great value! Full Review »
