Rockford is back and ready to collect more diamonds than ever. With an emphasis on unique modes, this updated classic is dressed to impress. Boulder Dash-XL has enough original content to bring in a whole new generation of spelunkers. This is one cave worth exploring!

If there is anywhere that the game shines, it's in play value. 150 levels is nothing to scoff at.

Couldn't feel much more dated if it tried. [Issue#76, p.102]

  1. Before the invention of “good graphics”, Boulder Dash XL and games like it were staples of video gaming. A puzzle game disguised as an action game, BDXL is a reboot of the classic franchise from 1984. You are Rockford, a robot tasked with collecting as many gems as possible from various caves, then escaping. You must avoid boulders, traps, and creatures who’d rather their gem neighbors were left alone. The gameplay is intuitive and simple, though the presentation leaves a lot to be desired; with ho-hum graphics and music. The action is fast and fun, and there are enough tricks and gimmicks to keep the game interesting through its many levels. The drive to master these levels and get high scores is paramount to enjoyment of titles like this. You’ll also need the fortitude to restart tougher levels several times until you learn the trick to them. The variety of game modes, such as free play and time attack bring casual replayability – and leaderboards are always fun for the competitive gamer. While not for everyone, if you’re the brain teasing, gem collecting type - you’ll be pleased with what BDXL has to offer. Expand
