  • Summary: Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to a small suburban town only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping center, utilizing anything they find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened. Expand

  1. The spaced out save points create a wonderfully rare sense of dread. You'll want to stock up on inventory and weapons before attempting a particularly difficult passage. And you're not always secure whether you're going to make it. This is where Dead Rising's sandbox zombie killing comes into its own.
  2. Dead Rising is not for everyone, as it does include tons of violence and gore, but the sheer number of possibilities in this game make it a wonderful addition to almost any Xbox 360 owner's library.
  3. A superb game. Probably the best title on the 360. The flaws are forgivable because it’s simply fun to play. If you are anal for completing a game in its entirety you’ll be on this forever. It’s a practical impossibility to complete all the missions and sub-missions in the 72 hour-mode (it actually lasts about 10 real-time hours).
  4. Once you look beyond the mindless killing and embark on the other styles of play the game allows then you are left with something far more fulfilling.
  5. The whole thing is simply great fun, a sort of malleable tour through the Dawn of the Dead films that clearly inspired the game. There’s a party in my Xbox 360, and all you zombies out there are invited.
  6. It's this severe push for gamers to be determined and persistent enough to explore every nook and cranny in Dead Rising that makes it either a splendid, geeky Pandora's Box full of unrelenting challenge and rewards or controller-smashingly difficult because of its hardcore mentality.
  7. Like many zombie flicks in history, this is for a cult audience only. It's a genuine shame but it just isn't very good.

Every comment with a score below 5 seems to have missed the options screen where you can decide if aim follows character view or camera view :) An excellent game. Completed it this morning, started right back from the start immediately. The deadlines are tight and the saves infrequent, but that just adds more adrenalin to an already tightly packed game. Fantastuic, definietly a must buy (and rtfm on the controls for extra pleasure! Expand

Awesome graphics, killer plot and characters, and a Grand Theft auto type feel to the gameplay. Some find the save system and the timed missions annoying but I feel it makes it more challenging and interesting. Just make sure you get 2 storage devices (2 memory cards or hd w/ memory card). Also Isabella and Jessie look marvelous. Expand

This is a fantastic game. I can't believe some of the negative comments here. "the subtitles were small to read, the voice overs were inaudible" - er get a decent TV then as its onviously crap. Some of the comments about the rescue system seem a tad unfair as each rescue can be different. You can hold some of their hands and drag em along. Some you can give weapons and health to, some you have to put over your shoulder. All in all brilliant fun. The save system could grate some people but the fact is that you couldn't start this game from scratch and finish it in one go without levelling up and restarting. You also need to pratice the order in which to do stuff. The small details as well as the in-your face bashing action mak this great fun to play. Shame theres no online multiplayer mash-ups though. Really great sandbox zombie game. I'm not gonna lie, controls are a little iffy (mainly gun controls) and mission objectives arn't organized well, but overall, it's still worth buying. Besides, who dosen't want to beat the crap outta zombies with a plastic toy lightsaber, or run them over with a lawnmower or shopping cart? Expand

A game that could either be great or awful seems to trick us. It's pretty good. Killing zombies can get a little old at first, but once you have some cool skills, it just gets funny. The only major complaint is having to play 72 Hour mode over and over and over to see all the game has to offer. Really, all I wanted to do was see a certain psychopath, unfortuanately they didn't appear until late into the second day. Wow, I'm not up to wasting that much time. Overall fun, but it gets old. Great potential but the controls are beyond annoying. If the programmers spent an extra week on this game just changing the save system and making the controls decent, it would be great. Unfortunately they didn't do this and as much fun as this game could be, the frustration involved in playing it overshadows everything else. Expand

I honestly don't have any problem with the save system. The best single-player experience I've had in years. Maybe the best game I've ever played. The weapons kicked a** too. Buy this game. Expand
