The strides it makes with co-op however -- along with its point accumulation system as well as some very tense and unique multiplayer modes -- makes this a great game to play with a giant bucket of buttered popcorn, a large Coca-cola, and some friends. This is your video game summer blockbuster.
  2. Jun 29, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 has some unique features and is motivated by ingenious and atypical gameplay mechanics, but it is also wasteful of unique opportunities and a new disappointment for this series.
  3. Jun 24, 2011
FEAR 3 has a tendency to become rather enjoyable with its tough enemies, well-thought-out levels and a gripping horror style atmosphere. The developers also used an all-too familiar Alma-flavored pattern to weave together a proper storyline.
  4. Jun 25, 2011
While the original F.E.A.R. mostly set its gunfights amidst boring office buildings and warehouses, this third game has done a much better job of giving us a wider range of environments to fight in, with at least less of a jarring difference in tone whenever it becomes obvious a horror bit is about to start.
  5. Jun 20, 2011
A welcome treat, if only for its nerve-grinding atmosphere. The campaign is far too short-with Fettel, you could probably whiz through it in three or four hours-but the multiplayer modes are a lot of fun.
  6. Jul 5, 2011
Though it may have its faults, the vast majority of the content is a first-person shooter fan's wet dream, even if it doesn't deliver the kind of nightmares you may be hoping for.
  7. Jun 21, 2011
It's clear that Day 1 wanted to appeal to FEAR fans but also break the mold. As evident from the back of the box to the addition of co-op play to the team modes in multiplayer, they set out to make FEAR a more team game than ever before. I think they've succeeded in doing so, but at the cost of a solid single player campaign and the real sense of fear that more or less originally defined the series.
  8. Jun 23, 2011
More varied, colourful and refined than its predecessors, F.E.A.R. 3's single-player campaign would be enough to recommend on its own. Supplementing it with Fettel's brilliant body-swapping mechanic is a masterstroke. F.E.A.R. 3 is like a Siamese twin; two great games sharing the same campaign. Coupled with four unique multiplayer modes, there's a lot of lasting value here.
  9. Jun 30, 2011
This is not a typical first-person-shooter. It mixes different gameplay elements in a spine-chilling setting. With a double-sided single player, multiple co-op options and a solid multiplayer offering, F.3.A.R. surely deserves some attention.
  10. Jun 28, 2011
F.3.A.R. can be disappointing for old times fans but some interesting gameplay features and a peculiar multiplayer game mode gives a value that made the title a valid alternative to Infinity Ward and DICE productions.
  11. Jun 29, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 lives up to, if not trumps, the prior experiences in the F.E.A.R. universe.
  12. Jul 25, 2011
Scary or not, F.E.A.R. 3 is an excellent FPS that delivers on all fronts – an excellent single player experience, drop-in campaign-based co-op, multiplayer player vs. bot co-op, and even player vs. player competitive fun – and it does it all in a unique and refreshing manner.
  13. Jun 21, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 features many of the integral pieces necessary to deliver frights – haunting sound effects, an arresting atmosphere, and foreboding environments – yet too often the game recycles old techniques that proved scary in 2005 but do little to raise my blood pressure now.
  14. Jul 14, 2011
In the end, F.E.A.R. 3 is a great game.
  15. Jun 25, 2011
Don't plan on understanding a word of the campaign; just plan on playing and replaying for higher scores, better multiplayer times, and the enjoyment you can only have from pure, hilarious, scared-stiff stupidity.
  16. Jun 27, 2011
F.E.A.R.3 isn't flawless, nor inventive but in the end, it works and deliver the thrills and excitement fans and non-fans are looking for in a $60 game. Aside from the complex story arc - if past games weren't played - there's enough substance to make it an easy and recommendable purchase.
  17. Jun 29, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 has faced numerous challenges to even be noticed in a sea of comparable titles this year. Despite being lumbered with a the dregs of a story even Alan Duff wouldn't accept royalties for, the adaptation and evolution inherent in the wildly challenging co-operative and online multiplayer modes will likely endear this creaky franchise to a whole new spectrum of gamers.
  18. Jun 20, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 has its flaws, and some of its scares come off more as loud and obnoxious than genuinely frightening. Overall, though, the game is a fantastic blend of horror and action that's armed to the teeth with extras.
  19. Jun 20, 2011
While F.3.A.R may not be the most competitive FPS on the market, it offers a ton of unique mechanics you really can't find anywhere else.
  20. Jul 7, 2011
Actual fear and horror step aside for an especially serviceable focus on action. This isn't solely the case for the lonely players though. Cooperatively there's more than enough quality to extract from F.E.A.R. 3, which makes this part the real successor to the original. The game stays on its feet, even though the story is poorly told and lacks impact, which is more than mentionable nowadays.
  21. Jun 21, 2011
Imagine stacking F.3.A.R. up against, say, Resistance 2. Shooters both, the games are about on par with one another in terms of graphics, sound, gameplay, etc. The difference is Resistance came out in 2008. It's 2011, and forward-thinking gamers simply don't feel like yesterday's best is today's as well. I say bring on F.3.A.R. 4, but make sure we have some new ideas, better scares and an easier to type title next time around.
  22. Jul 1, 2011
Rather than aping what's popular, it focuses on good gunplay and unique ways to make it interesting: the slow motion, the co-op, the scoring system, two distinct characters to emphasize replayability, and a story that knows its place and its limitations.
  23. Jun 22, 2011
It's short on scares, but satisfying shooting and exciting cooperative play make F.E.A.R. 3 a thoroughly enjoyable shooter.
  24. Jun 23, 2011
While the horror-shooter concept still works, the latest installment of F.E.A.R. has evolved in ways that are mostly superficial. An increasingly twisted story and an unneeded mini-achievement system both feel as if they're reaching, and neither element improves the basic gameplay.
  25. Jun 27, 2011
I still think it's a game that's worth checking out, simply because the combat is pretty great, making fantastic use of the level design, cover system, and slow down ability. Combine that with some legitimately challenging AI, and a lot of the big firefights will give you a great sense of accomplishment.
  26. Jun 21, 2011
Another great addition to the series. It's not perfect but it's a lot of fun and there's a lot of value and re-play value included.
  27. Jul 8, 2011
A lack of scares doesn't mean that this game isn't an incredibly fun and competent video game. It's got some great gun based violence on display, fun cooperative action and two unique characters to round out the mix. Really the only drawback that should stop you from buying this is if you really hate games with gimped split-screen gameplay or are expecting a tense, nail-biting horror video game.
  28. Jul 8, 2011
Alma would be a little disappointed if she played F.3.A.R.. The game has lost a lot of his mystic atmosphere and the horror parts have been removed by shooter parts. But the original horror was the essence that had made the predecessors so unique and outstanding. The coop-mode is amazing though.
  29. Jun 20, 2011
From the single-player campaign that can be played through twice with two different characters to the co-op campaign that you can play through with a friend locally or online to an incredibly thoughtful multiplayer offering, F.E.A.R. 3 has a lot going for it.
  30. Jun 29, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 offers some great replay value from not only giving the player an incentive to complete the game a second time around with the enigmatic Paxton Fettel but some very entertaining score based multiplayer fun. It may not be the most graphical game of the year but it does pack a punch where it counts with gameplay.
  31. Jun 22, 2011
And while the additions of features like campaign co-op and survival-based multiplayer are not unwelcome, it's the core aspects of FEAR 3 that should be the reason you play this game.
  32. Jul 19, 2011
Not enough horror, but the refreshing differentness complemented by the solid gameplay make this a great game.
  33. Jun 24, 2011
As interesting thanks to its gameplay mechanics as shameful due to the lack of an interesting storyline. A fast-paced action shooter that has lost its power to surprise, but that's still likeable enough in the multiplayer modes.
  34. Jul 26, 2011
A very solid and good game, with a varied and satisfying gameplay and very original multiplayer options. It doesn't scare ad we would have liked, but it's a recommended buy for every fan of the series and FPS lovers in general.
  35. Jun 27, 2011
F.3.A.R. may not be able to instill fear, but it makes up for these shortcomings with a solid gameplay and an exciting single player campaign, packed with lots of great FPS action. You have to beat the game twice to use both characters and see both endings, and then you have four fresh and entertaining multiplayer modes to enjoy. Definitely recommended.
  36. Jul 4, 2011
In the end, this is a game that will attract its share of fans for what it does do well - namely, transplant some Call of Duty elements into a more horror-like setting with some novel multiplayer modes. But that phrase, "horror-like", also works in another way: it has the appearance of being a worthy sequel to the atmospheric, creepy Fear games, but in the end it's a mere shadow.
  37. 80
F.E.A.R. 3 isn't expertly polished or perfectly balanced, but it's got sufficient creeping dread and more than enough gameplay variety to fan our desire for more of Alma's apocalyptic evil.
  38. Jun 29, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 is a fun shooter best played with friends, and although the campaign is short and kind of confusing, there's plenty of replayability in the multiplayer to make this a worthy purchase for any fan of the series.
  39. Jun 30, 2011
Being able to take down enemies with Fattel is worth the price of admission alone, as you don't often see a supernatural deity do his dirty work. Put the F.E.A.R. behind you and check this sequel out.
  40. Jun 25, 2011
Fear seems to have forgotten what its name means. It's become an average linear and scripted shooter, and gone are the cinematographic sequences as well. On the other hand, there's some goodness in the 2 players coop and in multiplayer. Consider it only if what you seek is light FPS entertainment, better if played with a friend.
  41. Jul 8, 2011
The game's single player is short, clocking in at about 4 or 5 hours, but when you factor in the ability to play the game cooperatively with a friend from a completely new vantage point this gives it some much needed depth.
  42. Jun 26, 2011
The campaign is decent though uninspired, with the relentless, strategizing A.I. the series is known for, and some excellent environments, like a Sam's Club-style warehouse. But the heart-stopping multiplayer really shores up the game's weaknesses.
  43. Jun 29, 2011
For FPS fans that want a break from modern warfare settings, F.E.A.R. 3 is this year's alternative - caked in blood, guts, mind blowing audio design and high-octane co-op action.
  44. Jul 8, 2011
Series followers know what to expect, and they won't be disappointed. New features like the cover system and the cooperative mode work well, although the game won't make history.
  45. Jun 24, 2011
The excellent shooting mechanics work in F.E.A.R. 3's favour, as they are able to let me forget about the poorly told story. Furthermore there are some truly amazing horror sequences which sent my pulse racing. That was also the case in some instances in which the flawed balancing almost led me to throw my gamepad against the wall in frustration.

What FEAR 3 lacks as a horror game it makes up for as a solid shooter. [Issue#75, p.80]
  47. 75
While it lasts this game is a solid and entertaining shooter, but as a FEAR game you should be expecting a bit more than just that. A return to the horror roots and a few more innovative twists in the tale would push the series back into greatness, but as it is this is a by the numbers experience with just enough novel features to keep it interesting.
  48. 78
It mightn't be the return to F.E.A.R. some fans wished for, but it's a competent and able shooter that doesn't let up.
  49. Jul 10, 2011
F.E.A.R. 3 is a good shooter but never surpasses the very first F.E.A.R. game. The gameplay is very smooth and you'll be playing this campaign multiple times because of the co-op and the different gameplay elements each brother possesses. F.E.A.R. 3 lacks scary moments and that is a pity, seeing how this used to be a key element in the series.
  50. Jun 29, 2011
The difficulty and length of the single player campaign and the lack of "true" competitive multiplayer (read: deathmatch) makes this game a little disappointing. But, truthfully, I can forgive that as the game has great replayability and an awesome game mode in F*cking Run.

I'll start off with the online aspects. The online multiplayer does not have the typical competitive gametypes like deathmatch and team deathmatch. All the online multi is co op. This is one of those games where you and a few buddies can get online, and itll have you screaming, laughing, and having an overall exciting time.
The campaign brings the stories of pointman, fettel, and alma full circle. While the gameplay remains much the same, the scare factor and atmosphere has changed from action- horror, to action- somewhat horror. It is a horror story with no scares. Being able to go through the campaign by yourself twice, with a freind in coop as each character, the addicting leveling system, and the stellar online multiplayer, this game should should have itself locked in your disc drive for quite some time. Way better game than the flop most were expecting

The level of tension combined with some eye popping visual moments really make this game a treat. The summer is always pretty slow for new and good games, so this definitely fills the void. Though it's not perfect, you would be hard pressed to find a game with this much replay value during this time of year. Full Review »
