At this point, though, you already know, if Killer is Dead is for you. It's shrill, chaotic, stupid and quite simply all sorts of genius. Finally, Suda did that one final step to grow as a game designer, no longer banking solely on the weird.

The "usual" Suda51 game: you can love it or hate it. This time, though, there's a lot of substance under the great style and the not-so-great tech. Killer is Dead is a solid and rewarding action game, especially if you dare trying the harder difficulty levels.

A classic Suda 51 game, with a unique art direction and a well written story. If you are a fan of Suda you know what to expect here.

We won't deny that Killer Is Dead has some issues, but what it gets right it does so with gusto and originality, and in today's world they are valuable attributes indeed. [Issue#102, p.74]

This is as surreal as stylish, as uncompromising as relentless, as odd as any other game from Suda 51. But is also more mainstream than ever before, which is admirable.

With Killer is Dead Goichi Suda finally nails his own personal formula, that one that never seemed to fully work with Killer 7 or No More Heroes.

A very effective combat system and distinctive narrative and artistic style get balanced by an unimpressive story and quite annoying screen tearing. If you're looking for a genuine Suda51 experience, it's nevertheless a recommended game.

Killer is Dead confirms the talent of Suda 51 on producing titles full of personality, who will delight enthusiasts of Japanese madness. A cauldron full of flavor, but where not everything works as it should.

Pure Suda, Killer is Dead is a really good action game with lots of flavor and many of the elements that have made special this director.

Killer is Dead is a crazy action game with a touch of Tarantino's movies, a little bit of Cowboy Bebop and a bit of Devil May Cry. Suda and Grasshopper have done a great job creating a memorable experience.

Suda51 managed to deliver a weird game again. The game may be weird and flawed here and there, but also unique in its style and incredibly entertaining.

Killer is Dead is not a bad title, especially if you loved No More Heroes, but it also doesn't overtake its charisma. Despite its absurdity, the game is struggling to become as unforgettable as the other works from Suda.

A carefree explosion of ideas both tasteful and vulgar. [Issue#139, p.104]

Even Killer is Dead's hyper-cel shaded aesthetic can't cover over a flawed, deeply misogynistic title.

It’s not mechanically deep or rewarding to be a classic, but Killer Is Dead remains a solid piece of entertainment that Grasshopper fans will enjoy, while the rest of the world looks in bemusement as to why someone would like this.

This beautiful and bizarre game has a lot of potential, but falters because of a fragmented story. However, a good battle system and varied environments will keep you entertained and intrigued.

Fun, good looking and twisted, Killer Is Dead is sure to please any fan of Grasshopper Manufacture. A couple of camera-related issues along with a story that just gets weaker as the campaign progresses keeps it from reaching the high score.

Grasshopper Manufacture manages to both astound and repulse in this pseudo sequel to the monumental Killer 7. With a rather strange story written by Suda51, clever and quick combat designed to actually challenge players on the higher difficulties and a distinct visual style - Killer is Dead is a unique, well-crafted game. Unfortunately, much of it falls flat due to a clearly misogynistic worldview. It's a shame, since Killer is Dead is one of the technically finer products from the studio.

Killer is Dead isn’t a game for everyone, much like any other Suda51 or Grasshopper title. The visual style, surreal story and odd sense of humour that runs through the entirety of the game make it more than worth playing through for fans of the Japanese developer, although those who have been left unimpressed with his previous output probably aren’t going to find this to their liking.

Killer Is Dead packs the style and swagger that's defined Suda 51's output to date, highlighted by the smart, well-designed boss battles. It's only really let down by awkward pacing and the padding between those boss battles.

The action isn't truly technical but it works, and the cast and narrative don't have that Suda quality charm, but they're interesting enough to compel you to keep playing. If you're a pure action fan, this is just another game to eat up -- for everyone else, there's not a whole lot for you to enjoy in Killer is Dead.

Killer is Dead never becomes anything more than a decent action game. The perpetual nonsense in the story isn’t remotely cohesive and the gigolo missions are nothing more than degrading distractions. While Killer is Dead often looks striking, the game’s other parts rarely match its outward style.

    Not Suda51's best effort.

Killer is Dead is a Suda51 game. If that makes you smile, there is probably something here you will enjoy. If not, then its mediocre combat and weird direction are not going to carry you through the whole experience.

Unfortunately, while the concept is sound and the combat system works well, the team's obsession with the bizarre, not to mention the female body, detracts from what could have been a killer experience.

With Suda we’ve come to expect the unexpected, but the most disappointing thing about Killer Is Dead is that the unexpected has become predictable. By adhering too rigidly to its creator’s esoteric template, it gives us pretty much exactly what we were anticipating.

Entertaining in places, Killer is Dead will only appeal to players who enjoyed Suda51’s previous titles, particularly Lollipop Chainsaw. If you’re not convinced by now, this will do nothing to alter that mindset, unless objectifying women is your thing.

The high-contrast art style lends a cool flair to characters and environments, but works against you on the gameplay front.
  29. Aug 27, 2013
    60
The decent core combat can’t hide the fact that this is Suda51’s most ridiculous, nonsensical plot yet, and an offensive “courtship” minigame is a further black mark on the proceedings. This one may even turn off Suda’s most hardcore fans.
  30. 60
This game’s not just bizarre, it’s downright schizophrenic. And while we’re used to — and even enjoy — some of these sorts of wild hijinks from mad-genius Suda51 and his team at Grasshopper, Killer Is Dead’s individual components never coalesce into a worthwhile experience.
  31. 55
Killer is Dead is a hodge-podge of ideas that never forms a cohesive whole. Take away the controversial elements (as they merely feel tacked on for the sake of it anyway) and you are left with a disappointing experience that doesn’t live up to the talents of the people involved. Give this one a wide berth.

Suda 51's unique off-the-wall style comes at a price, with gameplay, polish and coherence left by the wayside. [Nov 2013, p.77]

At various points, Killer is Dead shoots for the visual surrealism of El Shaddai, the hyperbolic intensity of Asura's Wrath, the oddball melodrama of Deadly Premonition, the extravagant showmanship of Bayonetta. It misses by a wide margin every time. Those games are punk, but Killer is Dead is just posturing. It's just product.

Killer is Dead contains a handful of good ideas that are sadly marred by a wealth of technical flaws, tonal inconsistencies, and an offensively juvenile attitude toward sexuality.

Perhaps I could look past all of this incredibly juvenile sexism if the game was any good, but it’s really not. The game is played at a slow pace, the story is just confusing, and there’s nothing that makes me actually want to play it.

Killer Is Dead would almost work as a parody of some of the worst elements of the last 20 years of video games, were it not so dead serious — and pathetically incompetent.

I'm down with crazy. I've enjoyed things like Twin Peaks and Mawaru Penguindrum. Crazy is fine, but you need to give me a hook. Killer is Dead has no hook for me. A great story and characters could get me through boring gameplay. I've been there before. Great gameplay could get me through a crap story. But, Killer is Dead offers me neither. It's not even bad enough to hate.
  38. 40
I've not felt wronged by a game to this degree in a long time. Hatred just about captures the emotion. Killer is Dead has the kernel of an acceptable game, swathed in unlikable characters, a Benny Hill attitude to women, alienating self-regard and some obnoxious gameplay decisions. It's impossible to recommend.

Don't let the white knight reviewers fool you into thinking Killer Is Dead is a bad game due to the sexualisation of women in it. It's not perfect, that's true. The combat isn't as deep as Devil May Cry or flashy as Bayonetta, but it's incredible over the top Suda51 fun. Fighting enemies is fast paced and enjoyable, and on higher difficulties, requires serious skill. I don't use the word often, but Killer is Dead is just awesome. The art style looks amazing, genuinely artistic. Colors are vibrant and flashy, and make Mondo Zappa and co. really come to life. The characters aren't necessarily fleshed out, but it feels like a Tarantino movie in the sense that they don't have to say a lot to know their life story.
As for Gigolo Missions, they're great too. Before everyone starts screaming MISOGYNIST, get off your high horse and enjoy Killer is Dead for what it is: a flashy, over the top game that's about fighting robots/monsters, and banging buxom babes.
Killer is Dead is my favorite Suda51 title yet, and I highly recommend it.

I have been blown away once again by Suda 51. As some of the other positive reviews have stated, there are many elements of the game such as sexualization of women that many are calling out as poor content, but there's a reason why no one can understand it. This game is Art.

Suda 51's career has been focused solely in the production of pieces, rather than games. This, like Killer 7, is not a game as much as it is a presentation of visuals, audio, writing, and overall mastery of the craft that is involved in any art based game. While I do agree that the sexualization is sometimes not necessary, it's not put in the game so fans can touch themselves, it's to present the main character as a smooth womanizer who rather than talking, woos women tactically with gifts instead of speech. As he doesn't actively care about these women, he doesn't care enough to talk to them. If there's anything to walk away from this game with is, it's that Suda 51 games are all about context and about artistic value. Do a little research about the Japanese audience, play his previous games, and let the game feel more like a representation, rather than a basic beat'em'up.

This game is fun. I don't care about the silly plot. The action is great and I'm loving it. The graphic design is a welcoming fresh change. The sound effects and voice acting are very good. The gameplay is varied and at times it is challenging, but not because of an 'artificial difficulty'. This game needs some skill to get through some levels. I don't have the slightness clue why this got low reviews. 10/10 Full Review »
