Whether or not you have ever enjoyed Metal Gear, this is a must for anyone who appreciates melee-combat. It’s simple, fast, and clean, with enough supporting content like additional weapons and secrets to encourage a campaign replay – or more, if you find yourself obsessed with the idea of a no-kill run.

Revengeance is ultimately a departure from the old way of doing things. Almost every scenario demands conflict rather than silent infiltration, and instead of conforming to his environment, Raiden can transform it in a matter of seconds.

This title isn’t Bayonetta wearing a Metal Gear skin; whether you are hoping for a meaningful expansion of the Metal Gear universe or a gratifying action experience, Revengeance falls short. Brutalizing cyborgs and hacking giant mechs to pieces is fun, but the restrictive design and lack of precision keep Raiden from capturing the best of both worlds.

When Revengeance is firing on all cylinders, it is a sight to behold. Watching Raiden tear through enemies while a dynamic speed metal soundtrack plays in the background is undeniably impressive. After spending an extended amount of time with the game, though, it becomes obvious that beauty is only skin-deep. Revengeance is more impressive to watch than it is to play, but it's certainly no Bayonetta.

Whether you enjoy or dislike the dumb, loud action provided by the script, I find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t fall in love with the well-crafted gameplay that fills the void between cutscenes. It’s a remarkable experience.

Revengeance is unapologetic in the way it indulges your greatest power fantasies, often doing so with such a grandiose display of style that you'll be unable to wipe that ever-present smile from your face. It's fast, flashy, and fun--and it's easy to excuse Revengeance's hiccups when even the simplest battles rival the best cutscenes in any previous Metal Gear.

It's a great hack & slash that works pretty well as a Metal Gear spin-off. The last part of the title seems rushed, and there are certain glitches that may darken the experience, but it'll bring many unforgettable moments that can be only created by Kojima and Platinum Games.

While Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance can’t match the majesty of Metal Gear Solid’s epic campaigns or the fluid combat of top action titles like DmC, there’s still plenty to like in Raiden’s true action debut. If you can forgive some combat issues, you’ll dig the outlandish story and crazy carving mechanics.

While not as polished as others in the genre, what it lacks in functionality, it makes up for with personality and blade mode.

The game has a good bit of replay value to make up for its short campaign length. Players that just want to play through this game for the story might want to consider a rental. For a Metal Gear fan, this game's overall universe will be perfect for you.

These animations are fantastic, with some crossing the line into total (joyful) absurdity, and most end with the opportunity to completely obliterate your target by cutting them into a hundred pieces. How many games are there where the player could, at a moment's notice, find themselves running across the tops of missiles to destroy a military helicopter with a sword?

The huge environment and the vast array of possibilities offer great gameplay-depth. The nanosuit combined with the bow is a unique feature, but on the other hand the campaign is a bit too short.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance suffers a lot from its bad camera, but it is nevertheless a very enjoyable game. Blade Mode works well and the action is appropriately over the top. The adventure is short, but luckily it has replay value to spare.

As soon as you cut open your first cyborg and crush his blue core, you’ll have seen enough to know that Metal Gear Rising is a stylistic murder fest with an amazingly satisfying balance between brutality and finesse. Platinum Games proves once again to be the master of hack & slash, without losing that intriguing Metal Gear appearance. Metal Gear Rising is a fantastic spectacle, that unfortunately ends too quickly.

An amazing action game that offers a level of exacting fidelity that few can match. The short length isn’t a detractor--you’ll definitely come back for seconds given everything it has to offer. Hacking enemies to pieces hasn’t felt this good in a long time. Don’t be surprised if this isn’t the last we see of Raiden.

Revengeance is a great hack and slash: Frantic, fun and fast running at 60 fps. It's a good mix of Metal Gear's universe and Platinum Style, but Raiden fails with stealth situations.

It's a bit on the short side, sure, and the visuals have a tiny hiccup here and there. Everything else about the game is perfect. Seriously, it's exactly right. If you like your action to be intense, dramatic, and totally ridiculous, this could very well be your game of the year.

If a sequel is made with a more consistent vision and a better development schedule, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being one of the best hack-and-slash games ever made. Until then, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will simply stand as a "very good" action game that survived cancellation through the hard work of an incredible developer.
  19. 70
There's a great game in Revengeance, buried under the rubble of a previous franchise collapse. With a little less zatsu and a little more dan, Platinum Games could be on to something.

Moment on moment action is outstanding, boss battles some of the most hectic and awesome we’ve seen in years and the presentation – from the bonkers cut-scenes to the brilliantly eclectic evolving soundtrack – is top-notch.

Franchise aficionados will know how convoluted Metal Gear plots can be. Revengeance also stumbles into preachy territory and tries to provide comment on America, politics and terrorism. This is expected for the most part and doesn't become too overbearing until the final hour, where cutscenes take an even greater role in proceedings. If the sociocultural commentary becomes too much, Virtual Reality missions offer a direct chance to get down and dirty.
  22. 90
Metal Gear Rising: Reveneance is another must-have game from Platinum Games for fans of the sub-genre hack and slash and an interesting, but different, chapter in the Metal Gear saga.
  23. 80
Rising represents some of the most fluid and enjoyable combat mechanics to grace a modern action game, presented in a manner so over-the-top that it’s hard not to laugh hysterically at the sheer ridiculousness of the affairs.

As an action game it's fantastic, especially the well integrated "Blade Mode" in which the protagonist Raiden can precision cut his foes. The script is kind of lacking though, and environments are often reused. Fantastic, but not perfect.

With little more than 5 hours playtime Revengeance is rather short. But I prefer a short but intense experience to a boring one that last 50+ hours. The story is surprisingly deep, the action is fast and furious.

I can imagine some Metal Gear fans might not enjoy this style of gameplay, but if any are willing to give it a shot or if you are a fan of high paced action, then you owe yourself to jump into Revengeance’s stylish and exceptional top class gameplay and have a slash of a time.

All the features, boss fights, stealth elements and VR missions just can’t compensate for the game’s relatively short story mode, as well as some nasty AI bugs and annoying camera issues.

Ultimately Platinum has managed to deliver on the vision that Kojima first announced back in 2009, and it's a roller coaster ride from start to end. The gameplay is the forefront of importance for the genre and it’s there that they’ve certainly managed to deliver.

In short, it's a quick cut through the world of Metal Gear that mentions just enough about the Patriots and the War Economy to let you feel like you're keeping up on the state of post-MGS4 Metal Gear while also filling it full of ridiculous, entertaining combat sequences and, for whatever reason, a whole lot of cursing.

You have to accept Rising for what it is and not expect your average Metal Gear: there might be stealth, yes, but this is pure hack 'n slash... and the best one since Bayonetta, actually.

Revengeance has moments worth 90/100 but it is surprisingly short and rather shallow. Apparently turbulence during the development process forced the team to make some cutbacks. [CD-Action 04/2013, p.70]

Metal Gear Rising proves that the Japanese industry can still amaze, and solidifies Platinum Games as one of the top action-games developers. If you're a fan of the hack 'n' slash genre don't miss this one.

The crux of combat holds Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance together despite its structural problems. The game's priorities are right, and cutting through cruft and seizing the core of the experience is a better result than the opposite end of the spectrum – a cluttered game that buries its heart in busywork.

Revengeance can now be considered part of the pantheon of action games, right alongside of Devil May Cry 3, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, and other classics. Platinum created a deep and rewarding combat system, layered it on top of an action packed story that captures the most outrageous moments of the Metal Gear Solid series, and added their own signature mark.

Metal Gear series and hardcore beat 'em ups fans will fall in love with this one. They will even extend their experience by replaying the game. They will have no troubles at all with its highly-problematic camera along with its useless junk in the combat system. They will handle it. Gamers outside the fandom do not need to get excited, there is nothing interesting for them.

An awesome game, one of the best action games of this gen capable of combining a great story and characters with an adrenaline-fueled and highly satisfying gameplay. Its only flaw is in the short story duration, but if you're willing to test yourselves with higher difficulty levels and VR Missions, it will be worth your money.

This is a game primarily for people who want to see everything and try to play as well as possible at all times, until they're sitting enthroned on the defeated beast, all achievements or trophies acquired. Every encounter teaches you new intricacies of the brilliant fighting engine, honing your skills in the process. If that's what you're looking for and thought of the last Devil May Cry as a bit too easy, you should rush out and get this.
  38. 85
The presentation is smooth, the enemies are fun and varied to take on (and the dismemberment feature adds some dynamicity to the battles) and the boss battles are absolutely superb. This is a ridiculously fun ride, even if it does delve into the ridiculous at times. But it wouldn't be a Japanese action game without that.
  39. 85
Platinum Games knows this hack 'n' slash schtick inside out, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is no exception, drawing upon the developer's experience within the genre. While it's no Bayonetta, Raiden's bloodsoaked outing is a superb action title.

With Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Kojima Productions and Platinum Games have retooled Raiden into a capable character who is finally justified in having his own game. By taking him out of covert missions, Raiden's able to wield his sword of justice and use his martial arts skills out in the open. This is more fitting to him than sneaking around in a cardboard box, which is possible in this game in case you want to pretend you're still Solid Snake, even just for a minute.

If it weren’t for the occasional camera issue, a steep learning curve, and somewhat frustrating QTE’s, this game would be pretty much flawless. That being said, it is an absolutely gorgeous title with a terrific soundtrack and just the right mix of Platinum Game’s frenetic, stylish action and Kojima Production’s fantastic storytelling, and when everything is combined it makes for a wild, over the top, exciting game that should not be missed.

It’s an extremely solid action game, a brutal, crazy ride that fits in nicely with the rest of Platinum’s oeuvre, but one that falls just short of being an instant classic thanks to some finicky controls and muted design choices.

The action in Metal Gear Revengeance is always spectacular, albeit it won’t be long before you notice some repetitive patterns. Unfortunately, the story that glues these battles together is weak.
  44. I was utterly flummoxed by the last boss, and there were lots of frustrating sequences through the game. On the other hand, those moments of victory made me feel ecstatic and invigorated for beating a challenge like I haven’t in a long, long time.

The distinctive feature of MGR: Revengeance is the Blade mode. Platinum Games surpassed themselves with the development of the mechanics on this is game: the cuts that you make with Raiden's katana will be extremely accurate, your enemy's limbs will detach right where you aim just like a piece of ham that was put through a slicer.

This is one of the best sword games I've played in my entire life! As a metal gear fan I was pumped for this new direction. I always wanted to take control of a cyborg ninja the franchise is known for. Come on? Let's face it Grey fox and RAIDEN were the real bad ass of their games! I had high hopes for this game and it surpassed my expectations. Kojima and kamya is a match made in gaming heaven. The game play is Beautiful and fluid, precise and deadly, and when you think this is just a button masher suddenly your health is almost at an end. This game takes skill to master. The more you experiment, the more your rewarded... And the boss fights... OMG those boss fights! May I say this game has the most exhilarating rating boss fights to date. This is by far the best action slasher of this generation. Full Review »
