When you combine engaging and unique gameplay with Swarm's pleasant (but dark) aesthetics and whimsical nature, what you have is a great downloadable game.

Swarm's bizarre take on platforming is a great, addictive challenge, but this strange journey is over too quickly. Here's hoping for some DLC.

Swarm is an original and addictive game. It offers a deep gameplay that keeps us busy for many hours.

Swarm can be summed up in one sentence: There's a big red button with a giant sign stating 'DO NOT TOUCH'. Regardless of the mission at hand you can't help but interact with everything along the way and Hothead have embraced this by making death as much fun as success. It's silly, immature, creative and ultimately lots of fun from beginning to end.

Swarm is evolving in a violent way a concept dear to titles such as Lemmings or Pikmin. Solid and fun gameplay make Swarm one of the most entertaining games of the marketplace.

Swarm is far from perfect, with often frustrating moments, but once again XBLA comes through and gives a game that offers something a little different a market in which it can flourish. At 800 Points there is no reason not to jump in and enjoy all that Swarm has to offer.

Swarm is a unique blend of addictive gameplay and humorous antics that will hold the attention of gamers willing to shell out the cash to download the game.

A great downloadable game with a balanced gameplay, good graphics and, most of all 50 funny Swarmites you can kill in the most unpredictable way. Ok, to kill them all is not your primary goal, but since you get also awarded, why not?

I highly suggest fans of games like Pikmin and Lemmings to download the demo and give it a whirl. There is enough addiction here to warrant the price tag. Much like Super Meat Boy and Trials HD, this is one game that can have you replaying levels over and over again just to better your score. And that is a sign of fantastic game design.

Sometimes it pays to do things differently, even if you risk driving your audience slightly insane in the process.

Swarm links together superb gameplay design, a deep but accessible control suite, and an original premise with such well measured pace and verve that it would send its own brilliantly engineered score multiplier off the charts. It's yet another example of why the most innovative and refreshing games of our time sit on the digi-download platforms. Content is a slight issue for the asking price but, then again, you'll enjoy every second of what's on offer.

Swarm really has a killer one-two punch with its combination of engaging and unique gameplay and whimsical presentation style.

Overall Swarm is a game that is highly addictive yet contains a certain frustrating aspect mainly in relation to the demand for a high score in order to progress. Fans of Lemmings should definitely pick up this game as well as gamers looking for that extra brain teasing challenge. The 1200 MS Points price tag shouldn't put you off though, and if it does, download the trial and give it a bash.

It may not look it in the screenshots, but Swarm is fast-paced, and absurdly hectic when you're playing it as intended.

Swarm is a tough game to judge. The difficulty is without a doubt the biggest hurdle someone must overcome when playing. It takes a while before feeling comfortable and even then, the challenge doesn't ease up.

If only Swarm played to its quirky strengths instead of working against them, its maddening obstacles would be much more enjoyable. [April 2011, p.80]

With a total of twelve levels, including two bosses, Swarm may not be the longest game in its price range, but you'll be replaying each level at least a few times in order to collect the five DNA strands scattered across each needed to unlock the bosses, as well as to earn those coveted Death Medals.

The game fails to innovate on its early mechanics, and it can feel like a chore to master some of the later levels. [Apr 2011, p.96]

An interesting new form of the Lemmings gameplay, but not interesting enough to keep me focused for more than half an hour. If it weren't for the ranking, I would not collect many points.

When all is said and done, Swarm is one of the few titles that can make frustrating, fun. It's certainly not a game for everyone, but if you can overlook some of the rough edges, there is a good time to be had. At 1200 MSP ($15), Swarm is on the pricier side for a downloadable title, so if you're on the fence, give the demo a try first. But if you've been jonesing for some good Lemmings-style action, this may be the closest you're going to get unless Sony decides to revive the Psygnosis classic one day.

It's almost as if the guys that made this game have been playing classic video games from the time before saves were invented and wanted to give you a taste of those early days of home gaming but with the saves added in.

Even when it's at its most curiously punishing, Swarm is dexterous enough to reward those who put the time into learning its methods and also satisfies with the type of cartoon violence that makes for a very endearing and well-made game on the whole.

Swarm is a simple game, but a fun experience overall. It lacks visuals but it offers a deep gameplay that keeps us busy for many hours. Not the best downloadable game out there, but fans of old-school gaming should give it a chance.

This pick-up-and-play title offers up more than enough challenge to keep you busy but enough charm and enjoyment to keep trying when hitting a brick wall. Though there's a high level of frustration in places, as levels take on the ridiculous difficulty of bullethell shmups, with practice and patience, you can master the swarm and have fun doing it.

Hothead Games has really gone out on a limb here by creating a more sadistic twist to what is essentially a psychotic lemming game on steroids right before a week long bender.

Swarm's cartoony violence is both charming and fun, but the game ends up being repetitive and mediocre. The game has got a good basic idea that unfortunately never reaches its full potential.

The core game just needed a bit more refinement to match up with what seems to be an exciting initial vision. If that had panned out, I honestly believe Swarm could have been something great.

Swarm is a game with a nice concept, which unfortunately isn't properly elaborated in the gameplay. Before you spend thirteen bucks, check if you have enough patience to play the same level over and over again.

A somewhat washed-out attempt at copying Lemmings and Pikmin, Swarm could have used more charm and a better structure for progress.

Clever in oh-so-many ways and almost endlessly replayable but, the level of frustration on offer might pose a health risk to those with blood pressure problems.

Even as the level designs seeks to frustrate you beyond measure, the game remains strangely addictive. If this were simply a bad game, you'd give up and move onto something else. But something at the core of Swarm keeps you coming back, despite all reason to the contrary.

It's a clever idea but being in charge of a swarm of moronic blue midgets proves a fairly fleeting and frustrating pleasure.

Despite its obvious parallels to the classic Lemmings games, Swarm disappoints. In spite of cool ideas and some nice design, the actual execution is hugely lacking. With a stronger focus and most of the technical issues ironed out, it could be worth another look, but at the moment it's just not worth its price tag. A new Lemmings it ain't.

It seems to me that the critics are being a little too harsh on this game. Sure it has its faults, but this is a solid download title for its price. Cool level design, and the scoring system allows you to continually improve on your best scores. Controls can be finicky at times, but nothing to fret over. Boss battles are intense and give the game a little bit of variety. The game is somewhat repetitive, but with the great visuals, interesting game-play mechanics, and clever scoring/multiplier system, it seems to overcome its small faults. Overall the game is a solid 8, but if you are a player who enjoys a good challenge, or someone who likes "high score" games where you replay levels to try and top yourself, this game is more like a 9 or 10. Hats off to Hothead for delivering a solid arcade title to the market. Full Review »
