  1. You will not believe how exciting this game is. Burnout features the kind of on-the-edge-of-your-seat action that made movies like "Speed" a success.
  2. There will be times when you get so frustrated you'll throw the controller down in frustration, but 5 minutes later you're picking it back because the game is not only challenging, but fun.
  3. This is a fantastic game and is worth buying, but don’t be surprised when it burns out of replay value a month down the line.

A dedicated gamer can beat Burnout in a weekend's time, so only purchase it if you're planning on enjoying the well-done two-player mode and unlocking the extra goodies like the extra vehicles.

An arcade racer with tight controls and graphics, plays great and a blast to watch.

A solid competitor - fast and fun and oddly addictive. [Summer 2002, p.93]

A colorful and stylish game that is blisteringly quick – if a bit technically dated. [June 2002, p.76]

Provides the most intense street-racing rush I've ever experienced in a video game. [July 2002, p.124]

While lacking in substance – primarily cars – Burnout excels in delivering edge of your seat racing. [June 2002, p.83]
  10. There's enough meat on Burnout's bones to provide an engaging, albeit unoriginal, take on arcade racing.
  11. If it's depth you want you'll be disappointed, but if you want to lose yourself in a high-speed car chase or force your buddies into a head-on, this one's for you.
  12. The crashes are a great gimmick, but after the first couple of hours the replays become more of a nuisance than a positive effect.

Comfortable, basic controls make the game widely accessible.

It paved the way for the future of the series but has unfortunately not aged well.

Bad: The graphics and car models looked decent for 2002 but look pretty poor now. The music is forgettable. The sound effects for crashes and the cars aren't great. The car selection isn't that great even when you unlock the rest. Only 6 to use and they are disappointing. Championship mode is too short. There aren't many tracks to race on either.

Good: The gameplay is still addictive in its own right. I did like the diverse courses. I like the cheats you unlock when you beat the game. I did like the other game modes. I thought the difficulty was challenging but not too hard.

Overall it was good but Burnout 2 improved in every way. Buy this game whenever you can.

Does not come close to Gran Turismo 3 in detail. The crashes while cool at first get old quick and take too long to play out. Would have been Does not come close to Gran Turismo 3 in detail. The crashes while cool at first get old quick and take too long to play out. Would have been a good game on a PS about 3 years ago. Today it's cliche and lacking. I don't see why anyone would buy this over Gotham Racing or GT3 if ya have a ps2. Full Review »
