A visual feast with each car modeled with incredible care. Everything from the texture work right down to the tiny car logos on the hoods is impeccable. [Oct 2002, p.110]

At early levels, SGT is more accessible than "GT3" and is almost always a joy to play. [11 Oct 2002, p.86]
  3. Easily the best racer of this year, Sega GT 2002 has also become a serious competitor to reigning king "Gran Turismo 3."
  4. From start to finish, it's a class act, and one that you'll obsess over for months to come. [XGamer]
  5. Excellent AI, controls and sound design combine their respective strengths to make a package that's stronger than the sum of its parts.

The biggest criticisms I have for this game are the limited number of tracks and the huge amount of time it takes to get cool stuff.

There are just enough extras and different modes to really make this game a must-have.
  8. The longest racing game available for Xbox.

"Rallisport Challenge" is much more specialized, and, arguably, better executed, but Sega GT 2002's experience is much more comprehensive.
  10. Game Informer

I consider this title a pretty good Sega rendition of "Gran Turismo 3." [Oct 2002, p.90]

It borrows from the best of Sony's series, but its own unique GT mode, aggressive A.I. and simplified upgrade system make SGT feel like a very different game. [Oct 2002, p.202]
  12. Although the handling is solid, and the visuals sport some cool effects, the inclusion of only 12 tracks does serious damage to the lasting appeal.
  13. GT 2002's only real issue is a relative lack of racetracks, but the game has enough depth to overcome that problem.
  14. Xbox Nation Magazine

An extremely well-designed, very playable game with a fair learning curve and gorgeous visuals. Well done. [Fall 2002, p.102]
  15. Has the cars, moments of originality and the track designs to threaten even the mighty Project Gotham Racing and if the graphics were a little more impressive it may just have pipped it.
  16. The game has great features, just not enough of them to compete with the likes of Gran Turismo. Had SegaGT 2002 had more cars and a lot more tracks we might be singing a different tune.
  17. Were it not for the lack of Xbox Live support, the somewhat tedious pace of the Career mode..., Sega GT would be nothing less than a "Gran Turismo" killer.
  18. The game features quality graphics, sound, controls, and options but doesn't really sign above the competition in any of the aforementioned categories.
  19. 80
It's not quite as big as "GT3" in terms of races and events, but there's still plenty of gameplay, and expansion disks and online capability on the horizon.
  20. Play Magazine

Whatever you make of Setga GT's game structure, there is little you can say about the game's graphics other than "awesome." [Sept 2002, p.70]
  21. If you just want something to race in circles while oohing and aahing over the purty but extremely exaggerated lens flare, this isn't for you. Sega GT 2002 is a game with substance.
  22. It's always just race after race after race with same amount of cash and the same prizes without any incentive outside of buying a new car or tuning the existing one. Frankly, it gets dull.

The original double pack with Jet Set Radio Future was the first Xbox game I ever owned that I got for Christmas in 2004. It was good.

This was a really good Gran Turismo clone and had many flaws but could not out-rival Gran Turismo 3. I thought it was much better than the original Sega GT on the Dreamcast in terms of controls, modes, race courses and car models.

The graphics looked really impressive for the car models and the race courses. The soundtrack is good but you can use a custom soundtrack which is also good. The sound in terms of the car engine is reused for every car which is really irritating. The controls are solid. The mode selection is diverse such as Replay Mode, Chronicle Mode, Time Attack, Vs Battle, Arcade Mode and Sega Gt 2002 Mode.

The Championship Mode is exactly like GT Mode in Gran Turismo but much shorter. There is the Official Races, Event Races, Car Shop, Garage, Parts, Used Parts and Save/Load.

There is 125 cars in the game and 12 race courses. This is really disappointing compared to Gran Turismo 2 and 3. It feels like you are playing the original Gran Turismo on the Xbox.

The Official Races lasts 5 rounds and has 18 races. The Ai and difficulty is impressive up until round 4 and the last license test where it becomes really difficult and then unfair when you have to do it again a second time to beat Championship mode.

I did like the various events for Event Races like Genre 70s-90s Races, Group B Rally Race, Drag Racing, Supercar Race, One Make Race and a Snow Mountain Race. Trying to unlock the Special Cars was a nightmare and I hated the stipulation for it.

The Garage was cool as you could look at the trophies you won and pictures you took of your car in a race. You could do test runs, view your car list, sell your car and change car parts.

The Parts shop was good and most of the parts weren't that expensive and you had to unlock more by playing through Official Races. It also helps if your car needs to be repaired or if parts need to be replaced.

The Shop was also great but most of the cars were really expensive and unobtainable unless you played Event Races and Official Race and got 1st place in the races.

The main flaws are reused engine sounds, poor number of cars and race courses, difficulty and AI spikes near the end of the first playthrough and then going into the second official race playthrough and in different events in event mode.

Overall the game still somewhat holds up.

An amazing racing game for its time. Great gameplay and graphics, LOTS of cars, difficulty is just right, with an optimal learning curve. NiceAn amazing racing game for its time. Great gameplay and graphics, LOTS of cars, difficulty is just right, with an optimal learning curve. Nice extra features and modes, including ice rally. There aren't many racetracks compared to the amount of cars and the engine sounds of some cars are reused several times. The default soundtrack is a matter of taste and it can also be replaced with your custom soundtracks on the HDD. Overall an awesome game, I still enjoy playing this in 2014. Full Review »
