Claire Denis, not always an easy director, is in top form here directing an almost all-black cast with grace and delicacy. For the happy few, this is French art house cinema at its unpretentious best.

You can live in a movie like this.
  3. There is never a shortage of options if you're looking for an intimate foreign drama about family bonds. But the eloquent insights of director Claire Denis stand alone.

Hushed minimalism is a rare and appealing quality in the cinema these days, but so little happens in 35 Shots of Rum that I'm hard-pressed to describe the plot. It doesn't exactly have one.

  1. This movie is a true gem. This is probably all that I ever expect when I step into the theatre and be in front of the screen. Claire Denis amazingly established characters Expand

I don´t mind the silence nor the simplicity of the movie. What bothers me about this movie is Denis´ total lack of imagination when it comes to depicting the strong bond between father and daughter. A smiling daughter (whenever she hears her father come home) and constant! hugging and kissing aren´t the most interesting ways of showing love and devotion on screen and certainly fail to communicate all the negative aspects this kind of relationship provokes like dependency, suffocation and so on. Nice idea, but in my eyes poorly executed. Expand
  3. The character relationships presented are all very intriguing, and all of the actors (including the single-scene supporting actors) give the movie an enveloping depth, but the movie just doesn't allow anything to develop from that depth - in a movie that is trying very hard to be a drama, atmosphere only goes so far.
