But the trip soon takes a dark and bloody turn. Just days in, one of the men shows signs of a mysterious affliction which gradually takes over his entire body and being. Now, thousands of miles from home, in a foreign land, they must race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely. Displaying a rare inventiveness and technical facility in this increasingly tired, cliché-ridden format, Afflicted delivers a genuinely suspenseful ride while making you wonder how its more elaborate effects were achieved on its obviously low budget.

Afflicted is an exciting, adept and smartly skillful debut horror film.

While what will happen next is never especially interesting, how it will happen, and from what unusual angle, generates enough excitement to keep things intermittently lively.

A low-budget horror-thriller that’s resourceful enough to wring a few fresh chills from a slender premise and a less-than-novel formal conceit.

The gradual ramping up of both the camera calisthenics and the gore quotient suggests a movie that’s been very deliberately paced, but that doesn’t mean that Afflicted really gets anywhere, except back to the very basics its state-of-the-art presentation is supposed to transcend.

Unfortunately, Afflicted is as emotionally involving as a really accomplished special-effects sizzle reel.

Summary: Afflicted is an exciting found-footage film with an original premise, fast-paced action sequences and characters you care about. 75/100 [B]

Best friends Derek and Clif set out on a trip of lifetime. Their plan: travel to the ends of the earth, see the world, and live life to the fullest. But the trip soon takes a dark and bloody turn. Just days in, one of the men shows signs of a mysterious affliction which gradually takes over his entire body and being. Now, thousands of miles from home, in a foreign land, they must race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely. Footage meant to be travel memories may now become evidence of one of the most shocking discoveries ever captured on film...and perhaps will be their only postcard home.

Afflicted is a very weird and uneven film, its found-footage execution works at first but as the running time goes it becomes quite weird and unbelievable. But the payoff is a very innovative and fast-paced horror film, not as epic as "Chronicle" but is still very good. I watched this film with my sister and we were both amazed watching the impressive fast-paced action sequences. The direction is remarkable and as i said the action sequences are the best of the film. The scares or "jump-scares" were awful and predictable (for me), i'm saying "for me" because these scares were very effective on my sister. But for me, (a guy who has seen almost every found footage film in the world), this scares were very predictable.

In some very few moments lacks of originality, in some scenes it's quite similar to "Chronicle" but the plot here it's very clever and inventive, Afflicted is the first found footage film about vampires. This premise is scary and it's so well handled throughout the film. The first act is a little bit slow but not boring at all, the character development is very well handled and you care about them. We can see some amazing views of some cities that these characters visit, so it's very entertaining!. The second act is filled with astonishing special effects and some scenes that will remind you to "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" and "Chronicle", but all these scenes are unforgettable and they're just original enough. The third act is a whole mess, it's the weakest part of the film and the special effects are not that great (though, i know this is a very low budget film, i will not complain about it).

But overall it's very entertaining and i like how the director puts a lot of heart on its characters, the main character is suffering a lot for all his actions and it's quite sad to see some scenes where he doesn't wanted to hurt innocent people, but he ends up hurting them. The last 15 minutes are a bit silly, and its found-footage execution is weird and unnecessary at this point, but at least ends up being a very entertaining and fast-paced horror film. The acting is great, no problems with it. The camera work is impressive and exciting, looks very real sometimes and that's the point of found-footage films!, Afflicted nailed it. There are some bloody stuff but nothing over the top at all. The end credits scene is unexpected and surprisingly effective. Afflicted is an exciting found-footage film with an original premise, fast-paced action sequences and characters you care about. [B] Check out my blog: www.memobosque.blogspot.mx Twitter: @MemoBosque

I was certainly fooled by this found footage film, it started off by being a mysterious intriguing horror, with some chilling scenes, until about the halfway mark right to the end were it ended up being an underworld cliché. Expand
