  • Summary: Someone once observed: "America is great because she is good; if she ever ceases to be good she will cease to be great." Today that notion of the essential goodness of America is under attack, replaced by another story in which theft and plunder are seen as the defining features of American history—from the theft of Native American and Mexican lands and the exploitation of African labor to a contemporary foreign policy said to be based on stealing oil and a capitalist system that robs people of their "fair share". Our founding fathers warned us that, although the freedoms they gave us were hard fought, they could very easily be lost. America stands at a crossroads, and the way we understand our past will determine our future. America the movie takes 21st-century Americans into the future by first visiting our past. Expand

It's far more invested in elaborate historical reenactments, hypothetical dramatizations and special effects than interviews, research and data.

What he’s doing, it turns out, is lowering the viewer’s standards of proof for a vigorous return to “2016″ territory, a hatchet job on Obama and Obamacare that tries to tie everything to a 1960s “radical” organizer who might have influenced the president.

America is less successful as a debate, since it isn’t one. D’Souza controls the conversation, and thus goes unchallenged when he tries to make real-world points with make-believe scenarios.

For the most part, however, D’Souza gives the impression of someone obsessed with whitewashing any and all dark chapters in U.S. history books. There are times when his defenses and rationalizations come across as almost laughably facile.

America is like the cinematic equivalent of one of those forwarded e-mails of mostly discredited "facts" that you receive from an uncle and at least those sometimes include family photos or a meat loaf recipe that can be of some value.

It would be one thing if D'Souza had an idea, or any idea, he could stick to as a through-line in his project. But America isn't a documentary; it's more like the badly-filmed version of a badly-written, meandering op-ed piece from a paper that lacks fact-checking or proofreading.

Graced with a hilariously definitive title, America is astonishingly facile, a film comprised entirely of straw man arguments.

*CRITICS* .. open your eyes and take a step down from your liberally-biased media talking points !
FACT: The state of America is the worst
we have been in under any president in US history, and the media keeps white-washing the facts in absolute denial that they backed an unskilled radically left politician into the White House for 2 terms.

If you open up your eyes and ears (vs. in denial), you will hear that the "progressive" movement has taken over the democratic party and slanted the facts in 2 of the most populous segments of our nation: our youth (in schools and universities) and our lower classes (whom will take as many handouts this government will give them .. making them dependents addicted to the socialized nation.. negating any form of work ethic in their families for generations to come.. aka welfare nation USA).

This movie goes through an enormous amount of historical research and interviews the unspoken truth at the source. The facts are mostly unknown and not ones you will hear from the biased media/critics, most of which they want to remain hidden.. given that THE TRUTH is what the Media and Critics PAINT as a FALSE REALITY on the NEWS we hear every day (which is why our president has 8 years to demolish our economy and the future patriotism and work ethics.. and associated past prosperity that American's had).

As the movie depicts, capitalism isn't some evil empire, but simply corporate growth occurs ONLY when consumers buy their products. .and given America's highest corporate taxes in the WORLD.. and rising, these economic engines (where we GET Employment!) are being throttles since high taxes on them mean less hiring.. less research.. and incentive to leave America where taxation is lower. The flip side of the coin is higher taxes on the consumer means.. less $ to spend on products and fuel our economy .. (2/3 of the US GDP IS CONSUMER SPENDING !). What Obama.. is doing lacks all logic, unless he has ulterior motives (which is why you need to see the part 1 movie: 2016 : Obama's America).

Simple facts that aren't even in this movie.. : we are now a socialized nation and economy (which is why Europe and other socialized parts of the world have no productivity gains and languish for the past several decades.. handouts with no work requirements give no incentive to install either : work ethics, now patriotism.. both of which are lost in this new generation under Obama. When you make the underclass of society dependent and not proud of their country.. America falls apart (but guarantees an under-educated class that will keep voting democratic to keep getting the handouts.. add to that 50M illegals to dillute our work-force and put $Tr more stress on the healthcare system.. we are about to incur tremendous economic fallout.. but possibly not until after the next election).

If you combine the Movie America with the ratings on this site it helps to explain the real political divide in this country. The leftist so called elitist who run most of the main stream media cannot stand any view point that goes against them so they slam it without merit often. The movie overall was very interesting and well done and I encourage everyone regardless of political party affiliation to watch it with an open mind. Forget what the so called critics think and listen to the people. Expand

Not what I expected. I heard the terrible reviews and poor performance at the box office. I arrived at a 505 showing on a Sunday st 520. The movie was just about to start. The theater waa about 75% full. Everyone clapped at the end. Going to check into who sang the national anthem at the end. Great documentary and pro America. I will go see again. Expand

My Husband and I took 22 friends and family members to see this movie on the 4th of July. The collective quality of this movie was indeed a surprise and I’m so glad we saw it. This movie will elicit humor, emotion, pride and history within the historical context. This is one of those movies that won’t hit you fully until the next day. My Husband purchased the book and told me how great it was. I will be reading the book this week and want to see the movie again this weekend. As being from a large Hispanic family where our family Patriarch and Matriarch immigrated lawfully settling the family in Kansas City in the 50’s, I would recommend this movie my fellow Hispanic citizens and to all Americans including children 9 years or older. A breath of fresh air from the movie industry and the producers of this film took extraordinary steps to make this not a movie but an event. Thank you so much…… Expand

Just saw the film last night and was captivated! Much better than anything by Moore. The only reason I can think the critics don't like is the tone of the message, which is very pro-United States.
    For shame!
Did these same reviewers take the strong anti-corporate, anti-military messages, anti-capitalism in "Avatar" into account when they did their reviews? No? No respect for their opinion on this one then.

The wide disparity between professional and public ratings of 'America' suggests that newspaper critics have goose-stepped sharply to the left in order to keep their jobs with their increasingly left-tilting employers. Bottom line, you'll hate 'America' if you're one of the bozos who think Obama is doing a great job. However, if you side with most Americans, who in a recent poll said they regarded Obama as the worst president of the last century (a charitable assessment, by the way, since Obama is easily the worst presdient U.S. history), then you'll hate this film. Putting aside their churish and untoward comments, some of which are flat-out wrong, the film is not great, but it's not bad either. If it fails to persuade, it is only because the pro-Obama arguments it poses are too numerous and well-drawn to rebut in a two-hour film. Expand
