Wow, that sucker was boring. The "twists" were so freakin' obvious, it was clear who would betray whom as soon as their characters were introduced. The ending is stupid! Probably the best reason to see the movie is how they establish Hawke's character. I wish the person who wrote the first 5 pages of the script had finished this sucker, because the writing dropped quickly off of a very steep cliff. I shouldn't be surpirsed that Kevin Thomas of the LA Times liked this one. Serves my right for wanting to just see ANY movie because I felt like some popcorn.... Expand

Flawed, but decently entertaining, and sometimes it feels like an old-fashioned thriller. What's with the forest scene at the end, though?

The film looks really good and the performances are spot on. The locations and set are used well and special effects are not showy. A good engaging movie.

I think this was a really good action movie, it was pretty much non-stop and had an excellent mix of characters. I would recommend it!!

I did like this film, but people are giving it a bit too much credit. It's really the story that still works, as lifted from Carpenter's classic, which itself was lifted from Hawks' "Rio Bravo". This movie really doesn't add anything that creative or interesting into the mix, just remixes the old movie into something, well...newer. The characters are stale and two-dimensional, but in a movie like this that doesn't really matter. All the actors are fine, it's the action scenes that keep things moving. Entertaining and very-adult, AOP13 will definitely keep you entertained for two hours, just don't expect to remember it an hour later. Expand

Straightforward, technocentric action-gore remake of John Carpenter's 1976 zip-budget wonder about cops and prisoners binding together to repel an attack by mysterious, wraithlike gangbangers, is neither the best nor the worst Unnecessary Remake of the past couple years, which seem to have seen a lot more of them even than usual. The major asset is the cast: Lawrence Fishburne, Brian Dennehy and Gabriel Byrne are nearly always a pleasure to watch; Maria Bello (The Cooler) is a police psychiatrist whose couch I'd love to share; and even lead Ethan Hawke, perhaps remembering from Before Sunrise/Sunset that he really CAN act, comes across a bit less generic than usual. There's also a clever twist on the old bromide of the veteran cop enduring his last day on the force before retirement--and stick around for the closing-credits rap song, which rehashes so many details of what we just watched 109 minutes of, you'd think Sherwood Schwartz wrote it! This version doesn't try to duplicate the notorious shoot-the-kid-from-Nanny-and-the-Professor-through-the-ice-cream-cone gag, but it DOES handily rip off the equally memorable stunt from Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2 involving an icicle. In Carpenter's original, the attackers were mostly unseen phantasms: an army of Michael Myerses in training; writer James DeMonaco and director Jean-Francois Richet try too hard to introduce real-world logic into the mix--and why did they almost completely jettison the romantic/sexual tension between two characters on oposite sides of the law that was so vital in the original? Oh well, at least this is a lot more competent and watchable than Carpenter's most recent theatrical effort, the laughable Ghosts of Mars...so I guess that's gotta count for SOMETHING! Expand

Good adrenaline movie. Nonstop action with some good surprises. Obviously with some Hollywood finesse thrown in but the bad guys being police made for some good extreme tactical action. Also had good twists of realistic "not everything is going to be ok" fate. Not for everyone but I was highly entertained.

After a moderately intriguing first five minutes this film just becomes unbearable, plagued with terrible acting, stupid dialogue and daft twists. There was no reason to re-make the 70's classic this could have easily just have been a different movie completely. NOTE: never cast Ja Rule in a film!

I agree with Spencer V on this one. Gotta love the dodging bullets part.... wait, wrong movie. Anyways, not as good as Pokemon The Movie, since they're the same type of movie, but it's well worth your time.

Just because you probably won't believe a minute of it doesn't mean you won't have a good time. Sit back, don't ask any questions, and enjoy. P.S. Was the original really as well received as the critics say it was?

Every one is comparing this to the classic, i am 16 and never knew about the old one but this is a great action film, and i like all the guns. this is worth seeing, but i do admit this isn't for everyone i think it is more aimed at the young adult adience.

WOW! I wasn't expecting this good of a movie. A throw back to the 1970's movies! ( yes I know its a remakeof a 1976 Carpenter Classic) Hollywood did a great remake for the first time in years! I can't remember the last time a movie gave me such a surprise...And that's a good thing.

What is good and redeeming about this film is the atmosphere and mood. Feels almost like it could be a horror film. Some of this film has the atmosphere of and could remind some of the game Resident Evil 2.

The only scene worth a damn in this ghastly remake is the very opening one, featuring Ethan Hawke close to his best. However, as the film drags along you will slowly be treated to an increasingly hopeless array of actors (including the wonderful anti-talents Ja Rule and John Leguizamo) who blather non-stop about things neither relevant nor interesting. For some reason plans that would be obvious to any airhead trapped in the protagonists' position are called 'smart moves' by Byrne (who is barely given anything else to say or do). Dennehy utilises his talents in saying 'those are Bishop's men' constantly. A pointless romantic sideplot is brought up and dropped along with an equally pointless drug addiction sideplot. Also, it seems like the movie was recorded with no director of photography, as almost the ENTIRE film is completely shot in varying shades of blue and black, with some of the absolute shoddiest camera work this side of a 'found-footage' picture. Often action scenes will be incomprehensible due to unnecessary close-ups and shaky movement, and other times it will be so dark that it is impossible to see. With so much wrong with Assault on Precinct 13, it's a mystery how it was even considered to be worth people's money. There is no reason to watch this. Expand

  1. The 1976 John Carpenter original has been reworked enough to give the urban thriller a distinct flavor of its own, and stars Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne provide enough gravitas to keep things involving.

In an era when similar genre pics increasingly resemble videogames, musicvideos or glossy commercials, the blunt, brawny simplicity of helmer Jean-Francois Richet's storytelling style seems positively novel.
  3. It's simply an astringent action flick that uses the wounded sensitivity of Ethan Hawke and Fishburne's witty hauteur to give the shoot-'em-up scenes some juice.
