  • Summary: A charismatic young Irish guitarist and a sheltered young cellist have a chance encounter one magical night above New York's Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, orphaned by circumstance. Years later, performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger who gives him the name August Rush, the child uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth. I'd rather August Rush went the whole way than just be lukewarm about it. Yes, some older viewers will groan, but I think up to a certain age, kids will buy it, and in imagining their response, I enjoyed my own.
  2. In the end, this could be the year's most sharply defined love-it-or-hate-it movie.

Only auds immune to diabetic rushes should head for August Rush, though tolerant parents wanting wholesome entertainment for the kids will like it for its repetitive encouragement of creativity.
  4. To describe August Rush as a piece of shameless hokum doesn’t quite do justice to the potentially shock-inducing sugar content of this contemporary fairy tale.

Odd, quasi-mystical movie that’s too silly for adults to take seriously and frankly too weird for kids.
  6. Robin Williams (yes, I'm afraid so) plays a kind of Manhattan-based Fagin with a touch of Midnight Cowboy to his wardrobe. And ants will play havoc in any cynic's pants as this loopy, goopy fairy tale about a kid looking for his parents oozes to its predictable finish.

I liked the movie...it was sweet...but I wish the ending was a little better!

This movie is a wonderful movie that entertains and warms the heart. People tend to forget that stories are usually meant to inspire and entertain. Critics tend to be like those who can't hear the music. They judge what they cannot hear to those of us that can. Expand

I can't understand why this movie was received badly ! For me, it's definitively one of the best movies ever ! Yes, the plot is a little bit unlikely... But a good story is rarely made of common events.
    1. This is a movie about Music. It's not a matter of mysticism or things like that : it's a matter of faith. Someone believe that the music has a power, someone don't. It's like a religion, everyone has the right to believe in what he choose to believe.
    2. There is a brilliant cast : I considerate Freddie Highmore as one the best boy-actor. Jonathan Rhys-Meyer is excellent, too, and he has a beautiful voice (perfect for the role). Keri Russell and Robin Williams are very different but both are heart-moving, in a different way.
    3. We are very attached to those characters : the little prodigy of the music ; the guitarist, wasting his life with an other woman ; the cellist, who can't play anymore ; even the manipulator who just want to make money with children is captivating !
    4. Some themes in this movie are beyond all description !! And I think it's not a movie about ONE thing, only : it's a friendship movie ; a romance ; a movie about music...
And if the message is that there is something about us who guides us, it's not a "pseudo-mysticism" movie, for all that. It's... well... like an other religion !!

It was a great little movie. If you are a imaginative person who likes being moved than you will certainly like this movie.

I enjoyed it. I liked the poetry it was trying for. I thought the music was fun and innovative. I am aware of many of the criticisms that can be madet about this film, but I still felt it worked. At least it did for me. Expand

Could have been better if the main characters had been given more depth, like in Mr. Holland's Opus. Again Robin Williams makes the best of his small part. Expand

This movie is beyond awful. There were too many characters, and not one was developed enough for me to have so much as a passing interest in what happened to him. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Expand
