Its portrait of an easy-target industry goes soft just when it needs a little added spine, while the film’s abrupt tonal transitions from jaunty comedy to cross-generational weepie occasionally come at the expense of the characters’ own credibility. But it’s the overarching niceness of “Best Sellers” that sees it through.
Most of Best Sellers’ problems have to do with structure instead of performance, so there’s not much that Plaza and Caine can do. They’re stymied by the writing and constricted by the direction.

Loved this film. Michael Caine is exceptional as the drunken curmudgeon and broken artist. There's a nice depth to this film that encourages the viewer to think a little deeper, that combined with an exceptional script that regularly injects the perfect amount of wit and humour into the situation makes for a really enjoyable watch!

This is a truly heartwarming film, funny, beautiful, and sad, this is a man who lost his love forever, the man is hopeless, behind his funny **** word, he's the man who lost, a former writer who want to write one last time, helped by a woman who worked as a book publisher, it's a beautiful story, and the movie is perfected by a powerful and incredible performance by the great Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza, Best Sellers is amazing.

You’d have to go pretty far wrong to get me to pan anything pairing up Plaza with Caine, and Best Sellers tries its best, at times. But Caine does a grand grump, and Plaza reaches beyond her repertoire of eviscerating, man-eating side-eyes. They make this page-turner worth sticking with until the bittersweet end, and that’s enough.
As an undemanding pas de deux, it’s sweet enough.
Its mere existence is a win, though. As is its ability to galvanize Lucy and Shaw’s relationship to help steer them through a third act that resonates on a frequency the rest couldn’t approach. It’s a testament to Plaza and Caine’s performances, too, since they are finally able to shake free of the hyperbolic hamming and prove why they were cast in the first place.
It’s an innocuous and cuddly film, even with Caine holding forth. It’s hard to tell if he transcends the role as written, or if he merely seized on the one shred of the screenplay worth showcasing. In any case, Caine brings his own shine to this rather dull affair, and shows again that he’s not ready to go gentle into that good night.
It is mainly a rather silly high-concept dramedy intercut with maudlin moments, and the sentimental keynote inevitably dominates by the end.
This movie was extremely well written and directed. The story is plausible and the scenarios are convincing. The brilliance in this movie are all the curveballs and twists that you just don't see coming. It is heart wrenching, funny, irreverent, embarrassing and delightful.
It builds logically and intelligently until you are so engrossed that you are sure that you know about what is going to happen next. You are going to be wrong....
Anyone who has rated this movie poorly has only watched the trailer. The 'Best Sellers' movie is excellent!

It's way too predictable, it's really, really predictable.
It helps that both Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza manage to sell the material enough so that it doesn't become a 100% disposable experience, but there's nothing to highlight for their careers here.
Not that it has to, yet it's so painfully generic.
