  • Summary: When 17-year-old Meryem is found disheveled and unconscious by the side of a lake in the countryside, her family believes the worst – that her chastity has been lost. They turn to the ancient principle of “tore,” a strict moral code that condemns Meryem to death. The duty of upholding the family’s honor falls upon a distant cousin, Cemal, who has just completed a brutal tour in the military. Together they embark on a surprising journey across traditional and modern-day Turkey in this unforgettable film. (First Run Features) Expand

To its favor, the film is blessed with strong peformances by Ozgu Namal as Meryem and Murat Han as Cemal.
  3. Director Abdullah Oguz gives us lots of nice scenery, but the simplistic story and characters strain credibility. What's more, the climactic plot turn is as hokey as it gets.

Best movie I have seen in a long time. Beautifully acted and photographed. A love story. Shows the internal conflicts of people adapting to new opportunities. Puts abstract values we take for granted into a context where we can see their personal importance with renewed clarity. Expand
