Simultaneously mean-spirited and self-deprecating, Deconstructing Harry is Allen at his most misanthropic. The problem is that it is, in spite of itself, one of Allen's more interesting and compelling dramas, only taken through such a two-dimensionally sour vein, given its characters. This is Woody's last great film. His writing is so hilarious and his direction is near-flawless. He pulls great performances from major stars in small roles (Judy Davis is stunningly great and does her trademark breakdown scene with total control and detail). Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Kirstie Alley and many others are wonderful to watch. Woody really let his critics have it with This is Woody's last great film. Woody really let his critics have it with this one and I wish he were still able to produce a movie like this every now and then. Though as a side note, if you have never seen a Woody Allen movie before, I wouldn't recommend this movie as your first one as it would probably give you the wrong impression of Allen's work. This was an experiment for him, which really paid off. Bottom line: Excellent Allen film full of humor that all true Allen fans must watch. Collapse

  1. This poisonous, brazenly autobiographical comedy shows off the best of Mr. Allen's misanthropic humor.

It's a movie of moments, some of which are side-splittingly funny. Arguably, this is the most uproarious comedy that Allen has ever done.

A fever dream about an aging, grasping, neurotic artist who brings his disastrous personal life, thinly veiled, into his work and ends up as a grotesque caricature of himself, alienating everyone who ever loved him.
