  • Summary: In Defendor, reality intersects with delusion in the mind of Arthur Poppington, a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor and combs the city streets at night in search of his arch-enemy, Captain Industry. In his attempts to combat crime and bring down this drug and weapons dealer whom he mistakenly blames for the death of his mother, Defendor ends up befriending a young prostitute, Katerina. Armed with unconventional weapons of mass confusion, and aided by his new friend, Defendor proves that sometimes you need to go off the beaten path – way off – to make a difference. That tension between silly comedy and poignant drama could have been dicey, but Stebbings and Harrelson maintain just the right balance between the two.

Harrelson shines, particularly in framing scenes with Sandra Oh as a tactful court psychiatrist.

Although Harrelson displays the right balance of sweetness and quiet instability, Defendor’s genial spirit fails to mesh with the filmmaker’s exploration of darker emotional terrain.

For all its aspirations, the film never meshes into something cohesive or substantial. Its naive earnestness has its charms, but like its title character, Defendor never takes flight.
  5. Saving the day is Harrelson's low-key, rooted performance, adding an unexpected layer of poignancy when things take a decidedly darker turn.

Defendor is an atypical superhero movie because Woody Harrelson plays a superhero who has no powers.
The screenplay is great and the movie
will have you chuckling. This is one of Woody's funniest and
    smartest roles.

Led by a commendable performance from Woody Harrelson as the adamant hero, this is a darkly funny, emotionally perplexing, and solidly written film that's firm grip only tightens as it continues to unravel the nature of its characters, all while remembering to display an enormous heart. Expand

Woody Harrelson is hilarious in this movie. He is just as funny as he is in Zombieland. The rest of the
cast is amusing as well. The movie is
very good and should be seen by everyone, A+. Expand

Defendor is not what you would expect from a superhero movie, I don't want to spoil anything but this is a must see for everyone (except younger audiences) it's a funny and touching movie, if you enjoyed Kick-Ass you'll enjoy this, it's one of the best superhero movies ever. Expand

Don't be deceived, this is not a comedy as it may occur, I can't call it a drama, but at least this is a serious movie about a guy with childhood trauma and as a result major social and psychological problems. He becomes a wannabe superhero as an escapism act to the surrounding world. The movie touches some adult themes like criminal, prostitution, sex slavery etc. Woody Harrelson made a decent job and a memorable character, the other actors are good as well. Overall, the movie is okay, but boring at times, also it is presented like a comedy most of the times and it really can spoil the impression, creating the wrong mood. Expand
