Faces Places is a subtly self-reflexive documentary that swims against this tide, inviting audiences to see that filmmaking is a process of having conversations with people, and enveloping each individual and their private creativity within the wider collaborative process. Art is a form of social work or, rather, it can be with the right people at the helm.
Sheer perfection – that's the phrase that springs to mind when describing the humanist miracle that is Faces Places, the year's best and most beguiling documentary.

While all of the people they meet are delightful characters who the film manages to milk for every ounce of their personality, Varda and JR inevitably emerge as the real stars here.
Faces Places turns out to be a road movie in more than a merely literal sense. It is at once a roving journey into environments we rarely see in cinema and an incomplete but invaluable map of Varda’s memories.
This movie, a diary of a freewheeling, far-flung installation art project, combines chance and intuition and a humane eye.
The collaborative energy between the two makes for an endlessly charming documentary, as “Faces Places” manages to look forwards and backwards with touching insight.
Because of age and illness, Varda is losing her sight, and Faces Places, which she co-directed, could be her last film. If so, she’s going out on a high note.
Exquisite, a masterpiece! A joy to see again and again! Restores one's faith in humanity and in the power of art - as art should surprise us, yes?

This is a wonderful film, deceptively simple but actually carefully crafted, reflecting on the past and present, life, memory, real people, and the role of images in our lives. Fun to watch, life-affirming. I absolutely cannot imagine where any negative reviews might come from, and the critic score is a good indication of the value of this film. Unique, inventive, real.

I like the van with a huge printer and photo booth built inside. The French people and villages are friendly and nice. The basic idea is disagreeable to me, its narcissistic to put all these blown up images of people everywhere on these beautiful old buildings. If it was in the US, the person with the picture would become an object of jealous hatred by all others. Some of the subjects talk about disliking the attention, it's little more than an excuse for selfies, which there is too much of already. The horse that thinks it is a sheepdog was my favorite part.
