  • Summary: After their adoptive mother is murdered during a grocery store holdup, the Mercer brothers -- hotheaded Bobby (Wahlberg), hard-edged Angel (Gibson), family man and businessman Jeremiah (Benjamin) and hard rocking Jack (Hedlund) -- reunite to take the matter of her death into their own hands. Four Brothers works as an urban thriller, if not precisely as a model of logic.

With equal measures of rock-the-house vigor and in-your-face attitude, Four Brothers proves usually potent and consistently enjoyable as an old school approach to what might best be described as the urban-Western genre of slam-bang, balls-out action-revenger.

Wahlberg, whose Bobby is the kind of guy who enters a room gun first, swinging a can of a gasoline, is the glue that holds everything together; he's perfectly cast and has never given a more persuasive performance.
  4. The casting is hit-and-miss. OutKast's Benjamin and "Troy's" Hedlund are weak, but Gibson is very appealing and the movie powers along on a strong lead performance by Wahlberg, who has never seemed more confident, commanding or scruffily charismatic.
  5. Four Brothers immediately joins the Good Idea, Bad Execution club. Hardly anyone seems to care about its believability - not director John Singleton, writers David Elliott and Paul Lovett or some lackadaisical actors.

The movie's not great, but Mom might like it.

Four Brothers? Ringling Brothers is more like it, because John Singleton's latest stinks like something the elephants left behind. It's not clear what the film is trying to do, but it seems safe to guess that it's doing it wrong.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Yeah it may not be the most real movie ever but neither is fast in the furious or transformers. The plot along with some great acting made this movie Expand

I honestly have never understood why this movie has never been liked. It wasn't made to be artsy though Chris Singleton does a great job with the film especially because it could easily have been terrible. My first Mark Wahlberg film and still my favorite. Expand

The plot is very slow after the initial murder of Evelyn Mercer and this may have put many off. It does, however pick up towards the middle third and by the end it has reached full throttle. The gritty realism of the story is enhanced by the winter scenes on the streets of Detroit. I can’t say I was overly enthused by the choice of music throughout, but then it’s not really my scene man. The performances were all excellent with Mark Wahlberg and Tyrese Gibson taking most of the spotlight, but I thought nobody put a foot wrong throughout. Over all a gritty realistic and sometimes brutal revenge thriller. Maybe a little too slow for some in the beginning but the pace does pick up (I promise).

It's not the worst movie ever, but at the end of the day, it was a possibly good crime drama that fell too much into a typical action movie plot with average acting at best. Still a solid source of entertainment regardless. Expand

A poor movie, with a loose story. The brothers aren't believable, you are thrown from kill to kill with little understanding as to why they are doing this. The police always seem to be one step behind, which is just not believable with this movie, they brothers aren't expert criminals, just delinquents. Do not watch unless you have a lot of spare time.
