This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Arthur Maggott, the worst of the death row inmates in which the United States Army absconds to combat the Germans is a convicted rapist; a Christian deconstructionist ingrained with the haywire belief that Eve alone brought "original sin" into being; a veritable loose cannon whom Major Reisman should have recognized as being a detriment to his mercenary outfit. In the manner that The Dirty Dozen serves as a loose template for Guardians of the Galaxy, the basis for Star Wars, likewise, garners its narrative animus from a non-sci-fi antecedent: Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, another film that features sexually depraved characters, but here the lowlifes are utilized for comic relief. C3PO and R2D2, the artificially intelligent droids Luke and his uncle purchase from the Jawas are modeled after Tahei and Matashichi, the two lowly peasants who accompany Rokurota Makabe, a general, burdened with the precarious task of protecting Princess Yuki, the last remaining survivor of the Akizuki clan. The princess, undercover as a mute girl, is preyed upon by the decrepit hirelings, knowingly taking wanton advantage of a presupposed cripple who wouldn't be endowed with the means to stop a potential sexual assault by vociferous petition. So taken for granted is the unquestioned altruism of C3PO and R2D2, it can be somewhat jarring to learn that their filmic bloodlines consist of gold-starved opportunists who would participate in a woodland gang-rape had they possessed the necessary brawn and speed to catch Yuki. C3P0, the analogue for Tahei, now seems less like some gay man than a eunuch, which would account for his feminine voice and anatomically incorrect body. It's punishment; it's karma. And R2D2, owner of an extending tool-tipped appendage employed, once thought, solely for quotidian purposes; most memorably, when he fixes the Millenium Falcon's hyperdrive generator, looks more and more like a phallic symbol, giving the seemingly sexless robot the potentiality for amorous feelings towards Leia. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot, a tree, and Rocket, a raccoon, share the same binaries as C3PO and R2D2: tall/short, feminine/masculine, and most importantly, celibate by circumstance/celibate by default. Whereas the tree lacks the genitalia for intercourse, Rocket does, but is doomed to be "the other", just like R2D2, since nobody could reciprocate romantic love from an entity so singular. It's not vitriol, but disguised longing that Rocket expresses with vehemence, when the bounty hunter lobs insults at the people he sizes up through his view-finder, since the toddler, the male/female couple, and finally, Peter Quill, the terra womanizer, inhabit a spatial proximity to life he can only glimpse from afar. Unlike R2D2, the golden droid understands his limitations and tries to protect his electronic friend, advising him against having "delusions of grandeur". Later, just before R2D2 boards Luke's x-wing starfighter, en route to blowing up the death star, C3PO says, "You wouldn't want my life to get boring, would you?" It's a declaration of love, platonic or otherwise; the makings of a bizarre love triangle, a futile one, at best, when it's obvious that R2D2 is no match for Han Solo in wooing the princess, even though he's a better mechanic than Chewbacca, and yet is unfairly overlooked at the medal ceremony. Only C3PO knows what all that beeping is about, only he knows the secrets of R2D2's heart. Similarly, only Groot understands his raccoon friend. Like C3PO, he tries to save Rocket from disillusionment. At the Kyln, as a survival tactic against the prison population, Rocket asks Gamora to "work out some kind of trade," pointing out to Ronan's minion that the "bald bodies find [her] attractive," which is to say, he does too. The love, it's there. When the Rocket's prison breakout plan is expedited, once Groot removes the quarnex battery from the watchtower, he grabs a big machine gun, overcompensating for his shortcomings, and as a result, he hopes, will have the effect of impressing Gamora, whom the raccoon knows will inevitably fall for Quill. While intoxicated, after a fight with Drax, he screams, "I'll kill every last one of you," as he aims his gun at the buff widower, who calls him "vermin". Even more hurtful, he is called "rodent" by Gamora. Rocket doesn't beep and whir; he doesn't need a protocol droid to translate for him. Rocket is a psychopath. But is he dirtier than Drax, the Maggott-like misogynist who thinks Gamora is a "green whore"? Although she is only a pawn in the Kree army, he is more than willing to slit her throat, similar to how Maggott stabs to death the wife of a Nazi SS officer at the Berlin compound. No. After the Nova Corp expunges the criminal records of all the Guardians, Drax asks Corpsman Dey if removing somebody's spine is a crime. Conversely, love redeems Rocket. "We are Groot," the tree tells the raccoon; tree for "I love you." Expand

This should prove very popular with preteens up to and including the parents taking them to the flick. Nothing not to like here as everyone should be entertained. Just the right amount of action, explosions and jokes to make it relevant. It moves along at a brisk pace.. It's already guaranteed that a sequel is in the works. There's too many superhero movies like this. This is not one of them. We loved the movie. We saw it last night, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. I would gladly go see it again while still in theatres. It is very rare that I ever would want to do that, so that means the movie was good. It was very entertaining. Kept my interest throughout. I thought it had a perfect mix of comedy, action, and drama. I loved the soundtrack. Rocket Racoon's special effects were great. I joked that they must have spent all their money on this because the makeup on some characters was a bit subpar. It looked like they didn't hire enough makeup people and they rushed through certain characters. Makeup aside, this is a very entertaining movie, you should go see it. Just please, don't stay for the scene after the credits, it was so stupid. Everyone else sat and waited, and it was so dumb, there was a huge sigh of "ughhhh" throughout the theatre. Don't waste your time. But the rest of the movie was great (including the scene that happens near the beginning of the ending credits.) Expand

I'm past that point in life, but noted (and laughed at) some of the obligatory pop-culture jokes aimed more at parents. (Funny note: Michael Rooker, "Merle" from "The Walking Dead," shows up as a teal-skinned intergalactic redneck!) I gather most people didn't mind that plot was silly, the hero a dope and the raccoon inexplicable ... it's an OK "popcorn movie" and achieves that purpose well. Expand

Well-written characters, even when two of the lead roles are CGI it still nails it. It's the most adult Marvel movie to date and some jokes will literally leave you speechless with what they got away with. Complete with locations and cameos for the hardcore fans and a simple enough introduction to the Guardians of the Galaxy for anyone to enjoy. It is simply most fun you will have at the movies in 2014 guaranteed! 10/10 Expand

Simply genius! This movie is a true gem! Very refreshing and nothing short of awesome.

I didn't know much about the movie before going to see it, and even less about the comic books it was inspired from. The trailer left me quite skeptical when I watched it some months ago, same for Bradley Cooper as Rocket the Raccoon. I told myself and my friends: This movie is either gonna fail so hard, or be absolutely amazing. Well... turns out it ended up being the latter.

The characters are all memorable. The dialogues are hilarious. The action is tight and, while there is plenty of it, it never gets old. The movie constantly jumps from jokes into action sequence into joke into emotional moment into action, back to jokes, etc. No dull moment, only awesome developement and scenes.

The music tracks selected are all excellent classics carefully hand-picked to convey a feeling of familarity, goofiness , and joy throughout the whole movie. (I'm actually listening to the soundtrack as I'm typing this ;P )

The characters are all memorable, from the excentric, goofy, yet handsome Starlord (love his outfit, weird jet armor, and guns), to the hilarious and clever Raccoon (which Bradley Cooper absolutely nailed and really impressed me with his performance), to the sexy, yet deadly, Gamora, Groot the humble, gentle, badass tree-thing, Rax the Destroyer (who's supposed to be a brutal badass, but who's actually freaking ridiculously stupid and sympathetic!). The Collector was cool, however we didn't see much of him. Ronan was menacing and a great villain, if somewhat generic. ETC. ETC. ETC. every single character is awesome. Period.

Anyway, I've already written too much. Just go watch this movie, whoever you are, it's a blast from the opening scene to the ending credits. I actually can't wait to watch it again!

Oh, and for those who are wondering. It's worth it to watch it in 3D; the 3D is great. It's not over-the-top distracting, and it's not super subtle, non-existant, like some 'fake' 3D movies. It's real 3D, that works well, and that does add to the movie a bit. No reason to not see it in 3D to be honest.

But for me this movie was so dumb that it would up being pretty entertaining. This may not be the most well constructed or well put together Marvel film in fact it might be the weakest of Phase 2 but it was the most fun I’ve had watching a Marvel movie since The Avengers, which while I didn’t think it was the best of comic book movies was entertaining, and considering how dark and brooding a lot of comic book movies are now it was nice to have something fun that was just a nice standalone film. And give Marvel credit for blowing away my skepticism and making this film about a group I’ve never heard of work. Because this film has little to no substance, it doesn’t have as much rewatch value as other Marvel films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier but as a fun summer blockbuster this movie fits the bill. If you are going in expecting nothing more than a fun summer blockbuster you’ll be entertained but if not you’ll probably disappointed. I’d say its worth one viewing. Don’t know if I’d watch this movie over and over again but for one viewing it was fun although I have no idea how you can pull off a sequel to this but we’ll see. For what this was it wasn’t the best Marvel film I’ve ever seen but it was one of the most entertaining ones I’ve seen in a while and I think for that the film should be given some credit where credit is do it did what I movie should do it entertained me. The retro soundtrack adds a layer of cool to the movie as well - instead of any hard rock, typical intense soundtrack backgrounds or EDM, we get Earth Wind & Fire, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and more. There are those moment of movie score in there, but the casette tape-style soundtrack is a tasteful addition that enhances the movie and, just like its characters, adds to the on-screen characteristics of the film. I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and find it as one of the best Marvel movies so far. I wasn't completely enthralled, but what is here is great and I'm sure I'll be more than happy to watch it over and over again in the future. Expand

Led by a sweet, swaggering human (Chris Pratt), the group includes a tree creature, a green woman, a literal hulk and an armed raccoon. This opens things up for irreverent humor, which isn't always that funny. Action is inevitable, but most of it's fast & noisy without standing out. There's also lots to look at, including dozens of fun creatures and some cool design. The playful tone and unusual individuals make it entertaining, but the underlying lack of originality keeps it from soaring. Expand

The humor doesn't always work, but the zingers come fast and furious to keep you grinning. It's not particularly bad, but it is a very flawed movie. The main reason would be the fact that the character interactions were mainly exposition. It's like a stuck record - they either tell their past stories or explain the plot, or constantly bash your head with reasons why they do or will do the things they do. In short - sloppy character writing that relies on exposition way too much.
Second problem is the plot, that really doesn't have much of themes or ideas behind it. It felt like it was to further up the Thanos plot line. It all revolves around the mystical relic that everyone wants. That's it.
Lastly, its saving grace was supposed to be its light-hearted humor. I expected it to be something similar to more subtle humor in previous Marvel installments (for example: Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) however this time the humor to me was way weaker, because of its abundance. It wasn't subtle and it relied more on specific character traits, pop culture references and easily noticeable formulas. It stuck to a few places, but ultimately fell flat.
In the end, the film wasn't a waste of my time, but I left the theater unimpressed.

TrulyAfter failing to enjoy his previous works like "Slither" and "Super," I consider myself to not be a James Gunn fan. However his work with this relatively unknown group of Marvel heroes manages to exceed my admittedly low expectations. Truly it's one of the best sci-fi movies in recent years as well as one of the best superhero movies of the year.

It all succeeds thanks to smart *ss humor, big action spectacle, an excellently crafted sci-fi world, and a surprisingly touching story about friendship. It expands the Marvel cinematic universe into new territory. Single-handedly this film opens it up to countless new horizons and potential stories.

The excellently cast group of oddball outcasts come together perfectly. Their back and forth is often very funny even if some jokes do fall short. Overall it's not as funny as a movie as it could have been, but that's easily forgiven considering how great the story surrounding them is.

You can see that the events here play a role in the grand scheme of things Marvel has crafted for the universe. Somethings might go over the heads of those who aren't familiar with these characters outside of the movies, and because of that a big character that kicks off events might seem confusingly out of place. However this movies self-contained plot never really falls short because of that, outside of what I just mentioned.

The movies greatest strength is how quickly it allows us to grow and like these characters. They're outcasts, freaks, and loners who come together and form their own sort of family. It leads to quite a few heartwarming moments.

The action is solidly delivered with cool alien technology and great special effects. The aerial dogfights can bring back some fan favorite Star Wars moments. There are definitely things out of the norm for a Marvel action movie in the action department.

Overall it's a great entry into the MCU. One that has potential to branch out from what Marvel is doing with their heroes on earth. There's a world here worth exploring and expanding upon, and I for one cannot wait to see what comes next.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" soars. It's one that every fan of the MCU needs to check out. Some elements may alienate those without years worth of knowledge and insight into Marvel's comic book universe, but overall I doubt it will leave anyone too disappointed. My total score for the movie is an 8.9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Guardians of the Galaxy, o Star Wars wannabe

• Vin Diesel como Groot — I am Groot.
• Dave Bautista como Drax — I am muscle.

The Quest Is On [Assemble Your Team of Ninjas]

For me the movie is about the journey that Peter Quill [Star-Lord] makes from a small time outlaw trying making up a reputation for himself. Then he finds his true calling when he is given the chance to save the Galaxy. He teams up with a very unlikely team of “Crazy Creative Ninjas”. They don’t step back in the face of a near impossible challenge. They improvise and adapt to the challenge in very creative ways.

It’s also about owning your own identity and try to direct how others define you. Both through your actions and what thoughts you share. To do your own Storytelling about you.
You are the one doing your own Self Narration.

You are the one doing your own Self Narration - Lord Sillion

So do take care of this opportunity to define your own identities. Your brain buys what it tells itself so don’t let others define you. Be sure that you are in charge of the message that you tell your brain. And, this is important, and that it is good message.

And just like Peter Quill, remember that your are not alone. Assemble your small team of Creative Ninjas go out on adventure together. They affect you as much as you affect them. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. So chose your team of Ninjas carefully.

So go forth and tell your story to both yourself and others so that the story about you and your legend takes shape and roots first inside yourself and then spreads out from there. And help your Ninjas tell their stories. This is your Quest.

When I watched this, I had never read the comics, and I honestly didn't know what to expect, except I assumed from the poster that it would be Star Wars-esque if a bit more comics-inspired. Instead, you should probably consider it a family-oriented sci-fi action-comedy with hints of adventure.

I could watch this movie over and over again. It had lots of heart and the potential is endless for Guardians of the Galaxy as a franchise, especially in the hands of director James Gunn. Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot all played off of each other very well and made a likeable group of outcasts. Yondu played a nice part as well and I'm glad to see Michael Rooker doing a film like this after departed The Walking Dead. Supporting performances from Lee Pace as Ronan, and the Nova Corps Glenn Close and John C. Reilly added nice touches to the story.

This is the best effort put out thus far by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and worth making repeat viewings. Make sure to stay after the credits for a surprise cameo!

Aside from being set in space Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't really differ all that much from the Marvel movie formula of the last few years with the focus yet again on a mystical item that apparently yields great power. Despite this Guardians of the Galaxy is great fun from start to finish and is arguably the funniest of all the comic book movies to date. The performances and action sequences are as excellent as well making for a superbly entertaining addition to the Marvel universe. I can pay no higher complement than to say that it is probably as close as we’ll ever get to seeing Firefly back on our screens.

This is more of a fun sci-fi movie than classic super hero flick. It is just original enough most should not feel like they have seen this film a thousand times before, but not so original that it is just odd feeling. The pacing can be a little slow early on, but over all good pacing. Thankfully, they do not spend 95% of the movie telling back stories for each character. The villian(s) is little to cliche. I like how they pulled the team together. If you did not see any of the latest crop of Marvel movies, you will be fine. This is a stand alone series.

Basically, if enjoyed The Fifth Element, Star Wars, or other sci-fi along those lines, this will be well worth your time and money.

It is definitely on par with Avengers in the MCU. It's funny, the action scenes are immense, it's visually beautiful, the core characters (particularly Rocket and Groot) are straight up lovable and portrayed perfectly by the actors. It does suffer from the same problem as Thor: the Dark World in that the villain is pretty one dimensional. We're told he's evil through dialogue but there's not a great deal of evidence on screen until we're pretty far into the film but you're so caught up with getting to know the heroes and seeing what's going on with them that you find yourself not being too bothered. This is a must for Marvel fans, sci-fi fans or just film fans in general. Expand

There was nothing about this movie that really drew me in, and it's because the character stories were rushed so fast that you didn't get a chance to feel anything for them. We get to see each character for a few minutes before their paths collide. So when the characters only know each other for a few days, we're expected to believe they've bonded to the point where they'll die for each other? This movie should have been an animated film for kids in my opinion. The dumbed down dialogue sure fit. I really wish they focused the story on Peter Quill, instead he felt like a side character. That's probably because we have five heroes, four villains, and tons of side characters: Yondu and his crew, the Collector and his slave, Nova Prime and the entire Nova Corps. So many pointless characters could have been cut from this film, and the necessary time could have been given to develop Quill's story. This would have improved the movie dramatically. Don't get me wrong... all the characters in this movie do look really interesting, however, you can't squeeze all their stories in a 2 hour film, otherwise it's a mess. The directing was great, the overall story was good, the action and special effects were superb, but the characters are so shallow... the core flaw with this movie is the numerous characters that shouldn't be in a film that's introducing the casual viewer to a completely new universe. Keep it simple. This is not the Avengers, where each super hero already had their own individual films that established their character's background. Expand

I'm very happy to say this movie not only surpassed my expectations, but it blew me away. The comedy is spot on, all characters have amazing timing and genuinely funny and unique personalities. Chris Pratt is hilarious and a natural leading man, charming, funny, and pretty damn badass as he goes from a Han Solo type to a true Marvel superhero, worthy of the name Star-Lord.
I brought along my wife and another couple to this movie. My friend's wife was pretty sure she'd be falling asleep during this one, as it's definitely not in her genre (she generally likes movies based on Jane Austen novels). I was glad to see that everybody in my group was thoroughly entertained by this film. It's got great action, a very cool story (I don't know why on Earth some critics would call the plot confusing, it isn't), amazing characters that you can't help but love and care about, and more laughs than most comedies contain.
This is the first movie in a long time that had me quoting the lines as I left the theater. I actually wanted to see it again right away, and will definitely, definitely get it on Blu-Ray. Best movie I've seen all year, and as close to a perfect Summer movie as anyone could ask for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow was I wrong about this movie. I was again hoping for a good story with some tense action but just like Legos Movie I got burned by Metacritic. I mention Legos Movie because Guardians has the same type of Attention Deficit Disorder style. The average length of each frame must be about 2 seconds. I swear it is just switch, switch, switch, etc. etc. throughout the whole movie. I sensed something wrong when the lead character just easily escapes the killers in the beginning. I mean he just skips past them and lands in his ship and zoooooom, is out of there with lasers shooting all around him. Lame. The whole movie is like this. They should have all been killed 100 times by the end of the movie. I mean seriously- the girl was blown out of her pod and the guy shoots out and gives her his mask thingy and they are both saved. No way. They should have both been dead 20 times in just that scene alone. And the big guy. Didn't he get stomped by the bad guy and thrown into a pool of mustard. And submerged there for a good while. He just jumps on up and is back in action. I guess the movie expects us to all accept that they all have live forever superpowers. Story- boy is it horrible. I may have missed something but a softball sized orb that has all of the power in the universe. I could have thought of something more original than that. The lead guy somehow knew how to conjure it in the beginning to sell to a pawn shop. Then all of the bad guys are chasing them for it throughout the whole movie. The one liners to put some comedy in it were so horrible. I just felt this way about the Lego Movie. Horrible story, action scenes that are way too over the top with fast switching frames where they escape among a hail of bullets time after time again, lame attempts at comedy, and way too long is how I feel about both movies. I guess if you like Lego then you'll get a kick out of this. Expand

Incredibly witty yet scruffy with amazing style that doesn't follow any superhero formula, it is near impossible to dislike Guardians of the Galaxy. Classic soundtracks oddly fit the cosmic saga, giving it grounded and slightly nostalgic feeling. This may very well be the Star Wars of this generation.

This adventure of ragged uncommon crew has a unique light tone, almost resembling morning children cartoon or video game. The humor is spot-on, cleverly written and personalized the characters better than dull gloomy distress most fantasy movies opt for. While the dysfunctional team has its issues, they are delivered with ease, discarding any cumbersome drama and replacing them with accessible comedy.

Chris Pratt is an excellent choice for Peter Quill. He is a good example of ruffian with somewhat noble heart, and Chris Pratt hasn't been too fixed on a protagonist image. It works well since Pratt could be your usual hero, but more importantly he brings great unsuspected humor. His character serves as anchor for humanity, because even though the tale happens in gigantic other realm, Quill is often shown as mere human and this aspect will definitely resonate with the audience.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora is now green skinned. After Avatar and Star Trek it’s safe to say that she possesses the exotic alien look. As a veteran of sci-fi genre, she carries herself comfortably and quite believably as action persona. Her character is indeed a peculiar love interest for Quill, but deep down it’s more a search for companionship rather than romance. Dave Bautista as Drak hasn’t got much experience in acting yet, still this character suits him and with a compliment of good cast, he probably has the better role any pro wrestlers have had in recent time.

Groot and Rocket are both CGI. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, is the heart of the movie. He’s a strange mix of raccoon and mercenary, a bit broken and still eloquently funny. Vin Diesel voices Groot, ironic that most of his roles are tough guys but as a gullible and vocabulary challenged tree that he delivers his better work. Aside from these two, CGI also covers the vistas and expected laser shooting futuristic action.

Design for the setting is great, often depicting places like those in video games. The splendor of debris and explosive accompanies the movie, it’s undeniably a good spectacle and top tier for blockbuster. The director James Gunn delivers a good continuation of scenes, humorous line and constant pace. Soundtracks from classic 80s music is gold, the contrast works much better than any techno tune could possible do.

Guardians of Galaxy is a rare movie that keeps its audience fully entertained, it doesn’t let up, if fact it gets better as it progresses. It’s a heartfelt and genuine effort to connect with audience. When it ends, it gives a warm fuzzy feeling as one leaves the cinema. It is no less than an utter cinematic achievement.

First of all, it was absolutely hilarious. The only superhero movie to date that I think rivals it in pure humor is Thor 2 but that was largely thanks to one person, Kat Dennings. This film has great laughs thanks to every character. From Peter Quill constantly fighting his ego to Gamora's "who put the sticks up their butt" misunderstanding to Drax not being able to understand metaphors to Rocket's abrasive edge to Groot's incredible dialoque, they all provide laughing moments throughout the film. The action sequences were done really well, as is to be expected from Marvel these days. The plot also unfolded nicely. I was worried in the beginning that they were trying to stretch the audience's attention too thin and have too many plot elements going on at once but they merged fairly quickly and developed well. I still would've preferred for this element of the Marvel universe to stay separate from the Avengers but hey, it's still very entertaining. Expand

The acting fell a bit flat at times but it was still another really good movie released by Marvel Studios. The group that was in the movie was a bit different as the GotG aren't that popular in the comic world. Barely anyone knew who they were at the time of the movie being announced but Marvel took a risk and it worked out very well. There was more of an emphasis on humor in this movie, which is probably why they hired a fairly well received comedian for the staring role in Chris Pratt. The humor is well done and the dynamic that is infused within the movie is really well done, especially with Rocket and Groot, who provided most of the humor the movie delivered. The movie had alot of action in it too and it bounced back and forth between the two very well. The only problem I had was with probably the most well known actor in the group and that was Zoe Saldana. She fell flat a few times here and there and I just felt like she was disinterested in what she was doing half the time on screen. It's not enough to ruin the movie but it was noticeable for me. At the end of the day though, this was a very well done movie and another good movie done by the Marvel Studios. It's the last one of the year for them and they went out with a pretty big bang. Science Fiction is my favorite genre, but I've never been a fan of superheroes, and in fact, ten years ago I would never have even considered seeing a film like Guardians of The Galaxy. On the surface, this looks like a kids movie, but thanks to some fantastic writing and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), as interesting a character as you will ever meet, Guardians of The Galaxy is Science Fiction at it's best. Quill is a thief, nothing more, nothing less. He is hired to steal something and does it the same way he's done hundreds of times before, only this time, there are a bunch of other people trying to take it from him. Quill will come to learn that the item is so very valuable because it is a nearly unstoppable weapon, that the worst men in the universe will stop at nothing to possess. Together with the other renegades, Quill decides the best thing to do is to stop these men and make sure the item is never able to be taken again. Chris Pratt stars and gives the performance of a lifetime. I remember first seeing Pratt in the show Everwood, and thinking that this guy has no personality, amazing how things have changed. Finally able to be himself, Pratt shows that his personality is larger than life itself, and twice now in his young career, he has turned that gift into two of the best characters I've seen in years. Paired with some of Hollywood's brightest young stars, an incredible team of writers, and special effects that are out of this world, Guardians of The Galaxy had all the tools it needed to become the companies biggest earner. This is a film that a lot of people are never going to think of as anything more than a comic book turned into a film for children, but it is so much more than that. From the music to the storyline, to the stars themselves, this film has something for everyone, it was my top film pick of 2014, a must see movie, and something that any true fan of cinema shouldn't miss. Guardians of the Galaxy is childish, clumsy and looks like a mess all in one but still manages to entertain enough to make it worth watching. Depending how you look at it, you'll either find it completely stupid or entertaining. I say its both.

I was already extremely wowed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men: Days of Future Past, and didn't think that this obscure of a comic group could beat or be equal with the two films mentioned. I was quite wrong. Guardians of the Galaxy is a fantastic film that is one of Marvel's top 5 best films. Not only does the film feature the great action you'd expect from a marvel flick, but this film had comedic elements that were missing from many marvel films over the past few years. The Acting/Voicing by all of the main cast members (specifically Pratt and Cooper) was fantastic, giving us a very good depth of their characters. The best part of the film, however, was it's humor. The humor in this film was fantastic, making it a much funnier, lighter, and better entry than the previous two out of Marvel Studio (WDSMP), Captain America: The Winter Soldier & Thor: The Dark World. Overall, this along with the two films mentioned earlier just made this summer one f*****g fantastic summer movie season. Expand

I never felt that edge of seat thing I've had with previous Marvel movies. The story was bland there were no twists or surprises no real character development or REAL back stories just, "hey I'm 'this marvel guy' OK lets move story along and show off our quirky personalities and punch lines". Altogether I can't give this more than a 4. If I could compare the movie to food I'd set it at microwaveable pizza (what comes to mind) u get from grocery store not terrible but nothing special. I should also note that this movie has a great soundtrack comprised of many 70s hit songs.
The thing that's very uneven in GOTG are the characters. The protagonist team is mostly good - Chris Pratt fits the role of space Indiana Jones well (although sometimes being too childish), Dave Bautista (Drax) is surprisingly funny, the Racoon is alright (although constantly angry) and Groot with its big eyes is just cute. However, the character problem starts with Gamora, who is Zoe Saldana painted green. Not only her character is cliche, but also her looks are just ridiculous and terrible. Sadly, the same applies to many other characters in this film. The crowd, consisting of many "aliens" is really just a lot of painted people, which looks pretty damn stupid. What is more, the main antagonist suffers from the same issue. I'm sorry, but an ugly blue **** in a rubber suit with some black **** splattered around his face just doesn't seem too menacing to me.
Anyway, is it a good movie? Yep. Is it worth watching in a cinema? Pretty much, there's not too much competition now. But is it something outstanding, something memorable? Not really, just another quality blockbuster from Marvel, which shows despite the setting having been changed to outer space.

Way too many effects overload the story until at times the screen is a virtual moving abstract painting hardly making any visual sense at all. The tongue in cheek cuteness is way too self conscious. Zoe looked great in blue in Avatar, but covered in green in many of the shots she looks unattractive, which is something I never thought I would say about her. She's always been the sexiest actress around in my book. The story is your average save the world from a weapon of mass destruction plot, where the bad guy has absolutely no motive for being destructive. Maybe once it becomes available for a few bucks it might be worth a casual viewing from the corner of your eye when you're doing something else, but as I write this it's only downloadable for $20, and it is definitely not worth that.

I have to add something about the reviews posted here. In more than one review, a poster criticized the "dialogs" in the movie. There is no such word as "dialogs." The plural of dialog, is dialog. Just like the word "fish." And the better spelling is "dialogue." And I will agree, there was a lot of bad dialogue in the movie. But there were no "dialogs."

It is a worthwhile praise for actors to followup on a comedic relief it is a short fun fling.
Yet if there was a trend, the trend is to get in bed, jerk it off in the next 5 minutes, and call it sex.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is totally beyond me why this movie got such good reviews and ratings. I guess now I believe in the saying that the masses generally have bad taste. The simplest of storeline with moronic dialogues (I mean even for a comedy; they are not even trying), a list of most cliché of "jokes" and a complete lack of chemistry between characters. That's what this movie is about. If you were looking for even the faintest clue that this movie was produced for intelligent beings, you won't find it. I wonder if the people who enjoyed this movie let the eye candies, the light show and the explosions capture them and put them into a trance where their brain is completely shut off. Does the masse love "cheesiness" and cliché that much? Do they no longer wish to find even the tiniest bits of wit or originality in humour? Do they even still know how to appreciate such a thing? One of many examples illustrating the lazy juvenile writing of this movie : Girl waits for guy at entrance of a pawn shop (or whatever) and gets him into a conversation. Guy juggles this precious object that pretty everyone wants to get their hands on. Girl snatches it from him and runs away on foot in broad daylight. I mean seriously. Don't they even try? And people accept this below mediocre work?

I'm glad I only digitally rented this movie. My girlfriend and I had enough of it half way through. I give 3 points for visual and sound effects and make-up. Everything else is a big zero.

The space battle scenes put 2 of the last 3 star wars films to shame. I know CG has come a long way in a short amount of time, but you gaze at these alien civilizations and they are fully rendered and just make sense. The plot is not ultra complex, but it doesn't need to be. The characters are interesting. Even Groot, with the one phrase he can say. I thought that would get tired quick but surprisingly it doesn't.
My biggest criticism of this film is Karen Gillan's relatively small part. It would have been cool to see more with her character. More fight scenes or initiative from her.
This is not one of those films where a perfect protagonist easily saves the day. This is a film about a bunch of flawed characters making something more than they are. It is a very humorous film, but surprisingly it has heart too. And action. Lots and lots of action. It strikes a good balance. If I had to rank the marvel films from best to worst this one would easily come in top third.

I was surprised by Dave Bautista's performance as "Drax". I couldn't help but think about this film as a flesh mixed between Star Wars and Star Trek with the great unknown the galaxy provides. By far, one of Marvel's funniest and best movies thus far. Expand

Dang 954 positive reviews. I wonder if anyone will ever read this. Anyways, good jokes and timing. Actors do a good job with what lines they are given. Special effects are spot on. High hopes for the sequel, there are some really clever ideas in here that, on second attempt might just be great. That said, if your group contains nobody under the age of say, 15 I can't really recommend this two hour long Saturday morning cartoon. Better to watch Deadpool, Iron Man, or possibly The Avengers for your Marvel movie night.

Grown ups will get a lot of the references that will go right over the heads of younger kids (which, in the case of a one or two slightly risque jokes, is a good thing). The film is well-paced and doesn't take itself too seriously. While there are a couple of plot points that might leave hard-core Marvelites kind of puzzled, there are no gaping holes that I noticed and the cast totally delivers on their misfit characters. Probably the nearest thing I can compare GotG to is Firefly, and that's hardly a bad thing. Its funny, action-packed, occasionally clever and does a great job of introducing us to the larger Marvel universe (literally). I was worried that we wouldn't see another big summer film as fun as Pacific Rim for a long time but thankfully I was wrong. If there is a complaint to be found its that the after-credit scene was kind of weak, although pretty appropriate considering the tone of this flick. It was still better than the one in Winter Solider and a cute gift for all True Believers. You won't regret watching Guardians of the Galaxy unless you hate fun, science fantasy and talking pseudo-animals. Expand

OH WELLL I GUESS THIS IS MY CUE TO START LAUGHING SINCE EVERYBODY ELSE IS LAUGHING. it got to the point where people were laughing and snickering at every tidbit in the movie, cause they thought that part was supposed to be a cue for the audience to laugh. nobody knew what was and what wasn't supposed to be funny!

I guess I could call the humor in this movie DRY HUMOR cause the jokes are executed with a lack of exaggeration, and dry humor doesn't make me laugh out loud. dry humor just tells my mind that im supposed to be laughing at something.

and that's what this movie fails at ultimately. this movie is a **** joke! never once was I worried about these evil guys destroying and taking over the galaxy! I was never worried! I was never at the edge of my seat! the movie didn't fill me with intensity and epic feelings! I couldn't because everybody was too busy laughing at each other and making a joke out of everything! soooo I wasn't laughing, I wasn't at the edge of seat in intensity, this movie just fails all around!

the only good part of this movie was the somewhat epic ending with the bad guy, but even that got ruined with an attempted funny joke. the ending battle did get me laughing, cause it was so ridiculous you had to laugh. sooo this movie did make me genuinely laugh ONE TIME! but in doing so it ruined a totally epic battle that this movie had going at the time! soooo they sacrificed an epic final battle for a laugh. good choice director.

overall, special effects were amazing, the only good thing about this movie. some touching moments here and there, a somewhat epic final battle, and you got yourselves a satisfactory, mediocre, marvel movie. lol goddamn marvel movies have been going downhill lately. seriously I would only watch this if you got nothing else to do on the weekend, but im pretty sure you can find things to do a lot better than this average film lol

Really enjoyed the misfits banding together and caring about each other. Sci-Fi was there, but so was the Marvel expanding universe of characters. I did not grow up reading the comics, so every new character I generally just expect them to fall into bad guy or good guy categories. They didn't really add many new characters (outside the crew of Guardians) so I didn't feel too lost in the comic book lore.
Fun soundtrack adds another level of depth (although most of the music is from the 70s and 80s so you can take that for what it is).
In summary, good Marvel sci-fi movie, funny acting, good music and good message at the end. Worth a theater visit, and buy it if you like the Marvel universe comics (I bet one day the box set will be gigantic!)

Definitely the funniest marvel movie I've seen so far, though very different than what they've been doing. It's an ensemble sci-fi adventure comedy with clever dialogue and a memorable cast of characters. Similar group dynamic to what we saw in the avengers, made all the more impressive by the fact that they haven't had several movies to introduce the characters.
It has very little to do with the avengers specifically and instead widens the lens to encompass the greater marvel universe, making use of characters and alien races we've seen bits and pieces of before (most notably in the Thor films). The tone is very unique, bouncing effortlessly back and forth between comedy and genuine drama with an array of action scenes in a wide variety of set pieces.
If you've been following the marvel movies so far, you'll want to see this since it helps to expand the cinematic universe while setting the stage for the future avengers films (though in some ways it feels like it's setting up Avengers 3 more than 2). On the other hand, if you haven't been following the franchise very consistently or not at all, it still works as an adventure movie. The main characters have little or nothing to do with any of the movies so far, and while there are one or two faces we've seen before, especially in the villain department, you won't need to know them to be able to enjoy it. There's an important macguffin that ties into the larger story, but it's basically just there to drive the plot along. If anyone has been living in a cave somewhere for the past ten years or so, I'd be interested to hear what someone who hasn't watched any of the marvel movies thought of this.
