"Hitch" is at its best when Will Smith advises Albert (Kevin James) on how to attract Allegra (Amber Valletta), and then watch his underdog underling overachieve. The film wobbles a little in the third act when Smith shows us his sensitive side in a hard-to-watch scene with Sara(Eva Mendes) because "Hitch" feels the need to tie up all the loose ends and deliver a happy ending.

It was predictable and had some really cheesy lines. But it also had alot of laughs due to Kevin James and WIll Smith's good comic timing. Eva Mendes does a good job of being cute but not too much. Overall it's satifying but goes through the same pattern that rom-coms have been going through for years.

Before you even see "Hitch", it's tempting to write the movie off as harmless fluff—a Will Smith star vehicle at best. Just look at the cheap Hollywood styling of the poster: Smith leaning on the word "Hitch" with an I'm-so-smooth grin, daring your expectations to be anything above waist-level. Will Smith as the Date Doctor, selling his charm to nobodies—makes you want to rent Meet the Fockers again, doesn't it? Fact is, "Hitch" does exactly what 90 percent of romantic comedies fail to do: sell you on its charm. The writing abounds with cleverness and laugh-out-loud moments. Urbane matchmaker Hitch has truer things to say about women and dating than Mel Gibson could learn from telepathy in "What Women Want." Finally, Smith gets a role where his mastery of gesture matches smart dialog line for line. True to Hitch's advice that nonverbal communication matters, the movie boasts some great physical comedy. Once you've seen nebbish accountant Albert cut loose on the dance floor, you'll know what I mean. Dare yourself to give this movie a chance. It's hilarious and true, the best Hollywood surprise to come along in years. Expand

Funny little date movie. Will Smith is funny as always, and Mendes hot as ever. There are many plotholes though (for example, they think everybody including business execs read the gossips...and every day of the week!) and the ending is one of the worst ever. You may or may not want to see this one, depending if you're like me and got free tickets... If you really want to see this one, wait for the DVD (or VHS if you're a poor kid in China). Expand

Pretty run of the mill, but hey people are going to see it to see Will/Eva, not for any mind-bending plot. Also, Phil T. poor people in China don't use VHS, they use VCD's. And they don't have to wait, the movie has already arrived due to illegal pirating.

Not as good as I thought it would have/could have been, it was quite funny at times but not really very original and there were quite a few slow, cheesy moments. I guess my biggest problem with the movie is that Will Smith's love interest (Eva Mendez) isn't likeable to me, she's not a very good person, kind of bitter and selfish, so I wasn't rooting for them to be together!!

Hitch is actually better than the trailers make it out to be. this'll be good to watch on a rainy saturday when it comes out on DVD. very funny movie, almost non-stop right up until about 3/4 of the way through. but it picks up again shortly after. first good semi-chick-flick-romantic-comedy-type thing to come out in a while.

With the exception of Kevin James who is very entertaining in this, this movie is lifeless, insignificant and rather dull. It probably wouldn't be an awful rental if your in the mood for something light, but nine bucks at the cinema, no way. Will Smith is a charismatic, talented actor but should demand a better script.

Is this the ultimate date movie?? That's what most people I've talked to are saying. And that's exactly where this film delivers! There are no special effects, no crazy actions scenes, and no over-the-top romantic moments. It's a very real, relationship film with witty dialogue and captivating performances from Smith and the gang. It's perfect for a 2nd or 3rd date or anything after. Do not see it on a 1st date!! It'll make the end of the night way too awkward. If you want to have fun at the movies with a significant other, this is the movie to see. It could also substitue for Dating 101. And make sure you don't miss a hysterical cameo by Maulik Pancholy of 'Diwali' fame as Will Smith's doorman, Raoul. [Ed: Diwali...By all means! Great flick...] Expand

I think the concept was excellent, but the screenplay is horrible. Kudos to Will Smith for doing the best he could with the weak script and co-star he had to work with. Eva is one of the worst actresses I've ever seen. She has zero depth and personality. It seemed unrealistic that Hitch would be even remotely interested in her, and that's where the story goes wrong for me. There's absolutely no chemistry between these two at all. I'm still trying to figure out what/how/why they fall in love... or was it just Hitch who falls in love ('cause we got no sense that the feeling was mutual for Sara, Eva's character). What really irked me was how the writers tried to give us some insight into why Sara was such a tight-a$$ in the relationship arena... something about her sister almost dying! Not because she'd been hurt in relatuonships before... Not because someone she loved actually died, but because he sister ALMOST died when they were kids! Can you believe that??? Then there's the boss in the beginning who's insisting that she needs to take a break because works too much one minute, but demanding that she get some crappy gossip article written ASAP the next. But, even that I could deal with more than Hitch's plea for forgiveness at the end and Sara's resistance. It should have been the other way around completely! I did not want to see these two together, which makes it a horrible romantic comedy. Albert and Allergra's love affair saved the movie. Expand

Almost painful. The chemistry in this movie can be compared to that of multiple pairs of elements, every one with one noble gas, causing a connection to be impossible. The humor is dry, the plot uninspired, and Smith's role of smartass that he seems to be stuck with in every movie is incresingly becoming irritating. 2 points however, for Kevin James, who always gives everything he touches a much-needed charm. Every laugh in this film came from him. Expand

Finally a good romantic comedy! This is easily the best American rom-com since "Love Actually" and how refreshing after the glut both last year and this year of truly awful ones (Along Came Polly, Raising Helen, more recently The Wedding Date), a really good one. With refreshing candor and subtle wit, the movie's principal pleasures like in Andy Tennant's on-location NYC locations and a low-key charming view on the city as well as Smith's self-amused mugging being wholly indicitive of how charming and good an actor Smith is. I have always felt that his best work is in the lighter comedy stuff and not the Bruckheimer-and-robot blockbusters he's done lately. The movie does peak a bit early (the first 80 minutes of this film are great), then the more traditional plot machinations of the modern rom-com take gear and then all we do is sit back and watch misunderstandings and arguments astue until everyone is gets together again. But even the cliches turn out not to be cliches, and by the end the film refreshingly doesn't dumb itself down but stays smart till the very end. Works both as a romantic date movie as well as a funny comedy (Kevin James' Q-tip and pizza-making dance moves are worth the price of admission alone). Expand

Who would have guessed that a pudgy White guy would bring the soul to a Will Smith movie? Hitch, in which Smith plays a modern-day Cupid--a "go to" guy hired by awkward or unprepossessing men to teach them "how-to" win their dream women, returns Smith to the comic spotlight, offering him (and us) a welcome break from the cookie-cutter roles in mindless blow-em-ups (the Bad Boys flicks; I, Robot) he's been taking lately. He's just fine, but it's Kevin James, playing the client who gets the most screen time, who steals both the movie and its viewers' hearts:he's tremendously likable, genuine, funny and handles a lot of not-too-well-integrated slapstick extremely well. (I've never watched James' TV sitcom The King of Queens but this performance makes me want to reserve some time for at least a few episodes.) Hitch is one of the few so-called romantic comedies in recent years that's halfway worthy of its designation: in the age of Serendipity, Little Black Book and The Wedding Date, it celebrates genuine love and sentiment rather than selfishness, territorialism and deceit. Sadly, and performances notwithstanding, Hitch is commendable more for the mistakes it largely avoids rather than anything it especially does right. It's directed without flair by Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama) who seems to be vying with Donald Petrie (the original Miss Congeniality) to see who can be the Arthur Hiller of the new millennium; it's overlong and artificially pumped up by one of those contrived misunderstandings whose main purpose is to provide a contrived obstacle that adds twenty pages to the script. Furthermore, as much as I liked James, why make the woman of his dreams a Cameron Diaz lookalike (Amber Valleta) who's ALSO fabulously rich and successful? Flick Philosopher Maryann Johnson is right on the money when she takes Hitch to task for making ALL of the movie's male fantasies and romantic objects stereotypical beauty contestant or centerfold types. Since beauty is, now as always, in the eye of the beholder, and since Hitch's clients' insecurity about approaching the women they want centers on THEM, not the women, why couldn't Hitch have been a little more adventurous in its female casting? Actresses as varied as, say, Patricia Richardson, Kathryn Hahn, Hope Davis or Jane Adams (to name a few among many others) may not for a number of reasons be what America's Next Top Model is looking for, but anyone with eyes, a brain and a heart should recognize their enormous attractiveness: in an era where Bridget Jones is a beloved cultural heroine on both sides of the ocean, why not cast some of these terrific women as romantic targets? Far be it from me to suggest that Hollywood do any more remakes than they already have on their plate, but here's a thought: how about a modern-day, slightly upscale redo of Paddy Chayefsky's Marty, with James in Ernest Borgnine's starmaking role and one of the above-mentioned ladies as the shy schoolteacher who changes his life? Heck, Julie Ann Emery--the heartmelter who plays Hitch's unlucky-in-love Casey--would be another terrific choice! Expand

Hitch is an amiable if rote romantic comedy that maximizes the charms of its quartet of leads. Unfortunately, the film mines most of its narrative ore from the tiresome notion that modern-day males are complete idiots, as mystified by the female gender as a coyote is by the moon. Will Smith did a marvelous job as the “Date Doctor,” and Kevin James had a fit presentation as well. The film kind of started out a little uncomfortable but enlarged its principles of thrust into a hysterically humorous romance tale. The last two minutes was a little off and beyond, but still Hitch was an exceptional depiction. The film never quit, the actors stood on board the whole shebang, and the humor just never gave up. I rate Hitch a 7 for two reasons, one fact that made this film a descent is because of its discomforting moments that seemed a little self-conscious, but the basis why I enjoyed it is because of the unpredictability. So uncommon in movies, that’s why Hitch I recommend. I expected less, but turns out that Hitch is one of my preferred and second-rate romantic comedies of the decade. Absolutely worth a try, prepared to be obsessed. Expand

First of all, I'll just say that, except for the truly awful "Wild, Wild West," I have absolutely loved everything Will Smith has been in. "Hitch" was no exception. This was a refreshing, funny and sweet film. Will was perfectly cast as the "Date Doctor." Watching Kevin James totally screw everything up with Allegra was absolutely gut-bustingly funny. Eva Mendes is delightful as the woman who finally tames Hitch. Altogether a terrific movie. Expand

This movie tries so hard to be entertaining to a mainstream audience and ends up being cheesy and pandering rather than genuine or original. Hitch is mostly predictable and lacks much originality, relying on cheep laughs and one line crack jokes. Fans of Will Smith are suckers.

Andy Tennant's flimsy but generally likeable comedy is tailor-made for Smith's cheerfully suave comic style, and the movie goes out of its way to avoid any hint of sleaziness.
