If you're not going to smuggle a cold-cut trio on Italian from Subway into the theater, at sixty-five minutes, "Home Movie" might feel like a rip-off, when you consider the exorbiant cost of purchasing a ticket and concession food. Even at a hypothetical ninety minutes, a film like "Home Movie" is troublesome because it seems like an open invitation to laugh at people's quirks. Even at a hypothetical ninety minutes, a film like "Home Movie" is troublesome because it seems like an open invitation to laugh at people's quirks. For example, the couple with the eleven cats, and the young wife of the inventor who thinks she can be a movie star like Julia Roberts. At least the idiosyncratic subjects in "Fast, Cheap & Out of Control" had a skill or an interesting hobby. My hunch is that moviegoers who consider themselves sophisticates in big urban centers such as L.A. or New York may laugh with derision at people who elect to carve out a beaten path for themselves. That's why the Louisiana-based man lives on a houseboat. There's so many owners of cruel hearts out there. It's like filmmaker Chris Smith is serving up these people to the lions. Expand

Smith's film is a celebration of quirkiness, eccentricity, and certain individuals' tendency to let it all hang out, and damn the consequences.
  2. Slight and whimsical.

Suffice it to say that Chris Smith's Home Movie is the most bananas episode of ''Cribs'' ever. The film is Smith's ballad of the wacky homeowner.
