Ultimately, it’s the social, sexual, political and artistic power of the same-sex dance phenomenon that gives the topic its unique heft and vitality.
This doc is far more about being gay than being a gay dancer, with not enough extended performance footage to give you an idea of their real capabilities. This lack also softens the impetus of the movie’s inevitable contest climax, which takes place at the Gay Games in Cleveland, with one of the featured couples winning big.
The cameras caress landscapes, skylines, domesticity, and sequined dancers with equal fervor, but one longs for more of what a competition official calls “a vertical expression of a horizontal desire.”
While the movie makes a winning case for the passion of its subjects, it bears hints of smoothed-over complexities.
For the most part, footage of rehearsals and competition is lackluster.
Hot to Trot brings up some intriguing differences between straight and gay ballroom dancing without ever quite exploring them in depth.
