The splendid cast embodies the characters so fully that the events actually seem to be happening to them, instead of unfolding from a screenplay.
  2. Merchant, Ivory and Jhabvala triumph again with their entertaining, richly textured film. [13 March 1992]

Merchant and Ivory have regathered many of the cast and crew from their earlier films to work on this reproduction to exquisite effect.

Incisively witty, provocative and acted to perfection, this sublime entertainment is a career peak for producer Ismail Merchant, director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.

Perhaps the best film made during the 30-year partnership of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.

A handsome and intelligent piece of work: a faithful, well-paced, and carefully crafted dramatization of a very good story.
  7. The performances in this costume drama are wonderful.

The filmmakers have allowed themselves an overlong 140 minutes in order to preserve as much of the plot as possible, but they have bypassed many of the novel's key ideas and ironies.
  9. This is the apotheosis of Classics Illustrated filmmaking, aiming at nothing more than tasteful reduction, and the fact that it's done so well here doesn't mean that it's necessarily worth doing.

  1. The acting was amazing, the imagery superb. Although it can get boring, Howards End is a classic.

This is simply an amazing film. The acting was so suberp, I was walking out of the house to go do something I had looked forward to all day, the film came on and within moments I was glued to my chair. Beautifully filmed and acted. Emma Thompson won every award known to man for this role including the oscar. Full Review »

Very disappointing - despite the lovely settings, powerful story and some of the best actors. Performances unconvincing, and less than had expected.
