The achievement of John Carter is that it takes the elements worn to nubs by everything from "Star Wars" to "Avatar" to TV's "Fringe" and makes them fresh again.

Against the odds, John Carter is itself pretty amazing - an epic pulp saga that slowly rises to the level of its best imitations and wins you over by degrees.

If you're willing to suspend not just disbelief but also all considerations of logic and intelligence and narrative coherence, it's also a rip-roaring, fun adventure, fatefully balanced between high camp and boyish seriousness at almost every second.

So why is everything so thuddingly fun-free?

The result is that John Carter plays like an alternate, inferior version of "Avatar"…Plus fleeting hints of John Ford's "The Searchers" - for this is also a Western.

This new Disney film, marked by myriad lapses and marketing follies, bears the woefully familiar earmarks of a big studio production that was pulled and hauled every which way until it lost all shape and flavor.

As film theorist Siegfried Kracauer once wrote, to paraphrase, art often blooms in the most hostile soil. No such luck here.

Fantastic movie, I absolutely loved it. I have read the entire works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and I believe he
would endorse this movie. The story was written in 1912 and the movie is a good rendition of the book.
The 3D and digital effects and film technology available today have made it possible to bring to life this
great story by one of the greatest writers of all time. Tarzan, Journey to the Center of the Earth and other of
his stories have been made into movies before. I sincerely hope sequels follow as there are more novels
    in the series.

It also should be getting the box office numbers that The Hunger Games is currently getting. John Carter is a better film. It was a fun, entertaining time. The story, the direction, the acting, the effects work were all great. If you love SciFi, you should go and see it right now. It is possible that because of the horrible title and the horrible trailers this movie didn't do nowhere close to as well as it should have done. Also, who are there 50-70 year old men that are movie critics these days? Don't listen to them. Expand

Had I not read the books I would have been 95% thrilled with this movie. The special effects were superb the storyline was kind of shaky at times but easy to follow.

Since I had read the books though I was a bit disappointed in how far from them the movie was. Small parts of the first three books were all thrown into one movie. Also certain parts seemed to be made up in order to modernize the movie for today's generation of action fans. Granted the books are older than me or most viewers of the movie. I would have preferred the movie stick closer to the books and see if keeping to traditional versions played out better on screen.

Where the heck did they dig up Taylor Kitsch to star in this I saw him in 'Battleship' which bombed as well, and he was one of the main reasons. He has absolutely NO charisma, and that in turn makes each and every one of his lines...laughable. This entire movie is a nauseating mess, where one scene is worse than the next.
