Kill Bill Volume 1 is a gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance whose only real fault is that it isn't as detailed or captivating as Volume 2. Kill Bill tells the story of The Bride who was betrayed and left for dead in a church in El Paso by her once lover Bill and how when she awoke from a 4 year coma all she wanted was revenge. However that is not the only thing going for it as it is also a satire and a tribute to Kung Fu films in general. Of course Tarantino brings his own directorial flare to the film as well as his signature dialogue but the first volume plays more like a tribute than a film of its own where as the 2nd shines on its own merits and story. If anything it is the concentration on lesser characters like O-Ren Ishii that brings the film down because she is the weakest of the main group of characters (although Lucy Lui's acting is fantastic as always). This concentration seems like a mistake but in a way it does help set up the 2nd by showing how hard it was to take on only 2 of the 5 targets The Bride goes after. However the Hatori Hanzo section of the film does work especially well as it embraces Kung Fu and Samurai film conventions while also allowing for certain comedic elements and also fleshing out The Bride's excellent character before getting into the more action heavy second half of the film. Overall it is one of Tarantino's best works but is just overshadowed by Volume 2 which just does everything that Volume 1 does but does it better. Expand

69 critic and 6.2 user average ratings??? Are people mad? Though I liked part 2 better, part 1 is way up there, and both DVDs are excellent transfers. Yes, it's graphic, but the violence isn't senseless, just like all of Tarantino's other films... why is Kill Bill treated so differently? Excellent acting, intricate screenplay, character develop and cinematography make it a must-have. Expand

This was the first Quentin Tarantino movie I have ever seen and I could not stop watching. My eyes were glued to the screen. I was in awe and even the several times after that when I would watch this film everyday while waiting for Volume 2 to be released on DVD. It all just fits together so well with the promise of an excellent second half. This is a must see!

"Kill Bill: Vol 1" is a bloody mess filled with bizarre **** and unique garbage. Director Tarantino's presentation may have been cool or stunning, but it can't save the movie from its terrible plot with shallow depth. He should have made this into a **** anime, not a movie.

It's so sad we didn't get to reading the lowest scoring critic review. What would they have to say for themselves? If one cannot see through the "gory" (blood squirting in fountains, cartoony if you ask me) spots and see how incredibly stylish this movie is... Every single moment, every single chopped off arm is full of tension, action, and even humor! Incredible how he combines those key elements harmoniously, fused with great acting and strangely enough believable characters... It's the Bohemian Rhapsody of movies; something of everything, but never coming short. Why do some people see a 10 for a given opinion as if that person is a fanboy? This is one of the movies that's worth it. Expand

Its obvious most of the people who dont like this movie have a problem with the excessive blood and gore. Well for one you would have to be a moron not to know what you were watching before u went to see the movie. Anybody who saw the previews and truely knows QT work would have known it was going to be excessively violent and it was going to have some disturbing scenes (Resvoir dogs hello?) We saw 2 children watch there parents get murdered, news flash things like that happen everyday thats one of the reasons Kill Bill is a masterpiece and what makes QT so great, he manages to incorperate reality in with exaggerated and sometimes dreamlike non realistic scenes. Kill Bill is like a dream/nightmare with the excessive gore and unrealistic fighting mixed with scenes that are more or less realistic such as the fight with Green in Cali or the inclusion of the Yakuza clan in the story, his technique of not telling the story in chronological order is second to none. Its simply a masterpiece an ode to kung fu, Bruce Lee and anyone that gives it an 0 is a fool a prude or both. Expand

I actually couldn't stand Uma Thurman prior to this movie but my respect for her as an actress after seeing her work with Mr. Tarantino on this film has made me a fan of hers. As for the movie itself, I love it. I think the character of Budd best described the entire dilemma of the movie with the line, "that woman deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die...then again, so does she". It's this great bad guy turned protagonist storyline and you find yourself rooting for this character who is actually not a very good person herself. Her redeeming quality is her desire for honest and respectable motherhood, but she is an assassin, or as Bill later puts it, a natural born killer, who enjoys killing people. As for those who said the said there is no humor, you can't tell me that thirteen hours in a truck (with the name "Buck" gave it) spent wiggling her toes to make her legs work didn't induce the smallest of smiles. C'mon now. And as for the "no plot" skeptics, are you kidding? The plotline is classic. Revenge, the most used action plot, and used as it may be, this was an entirely different spin on it. The culmination of kung fu fantasy fighting mixed with good old fashioned western justice makes this action flick a ten for me, and I normally hate gory movies. Expand

I'm not a huge enthusiast of Tarantino or this movie, but I liked it and I'm shocked it got as low as a 69. I expected high 70's at the lowest to high 80's at the best. It's a good movie, with interesting style, and plenty to keep your attention. Tarantino screws with reality, it seems, but that's what movies are for, aren't they?

Stylish and exciting with a great soundtrack! I smell a rat, some reviews which gave this film 0 look remarkable similar! This gives me reason to suspect that they were penned from the same indivdual! For those complaining against the violence, just what were you expecting! The clue is in the title! Any film with "kill" in is not going to be Mary Poppins! As for those comments saying most of the audience left halfway through the film with only 25% capacity, I guess it depends where you live, my cinema was packed to capacity and not one person left early! It's off-beat, unexpected and simple amazing. There are absolutelly no movies that are like Kill Bill. It is directed in a way that that keeps your eyes and ears completely stimulated. Every fight scene felt like a different movie. Some parts all you could see is shadows behind a blue screen. Other parts of the movie where like a Steven Siegal knife fight. Others still, are more of a showdown with kitana swords. People who can't take gore or don't appreciate a good scene will probebly not like this movie. I have never scene any of QTs movies, which probebly let me appreciate it even more because I had no expectations. Try not to expect anything and you'll be giving it a 10 too. A final note, I never, ever type reviews up for movies. It may not be made for everyone, but Kill Bill is very underrated and was definitlly THE BEST movie I have seen all year. Expand

I love seeing the "rave" reviews of film critics without enough sack to say what everyone else is thinking - Tarantino sucks. This is not the movie I was expecting from Quentin Tarantino. In fact, I doubt that this was the movie that anyone was expecting from the prolific imagination that brought us "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs." Tarantino has taken his fetishistic, ultra-violent subconcious and puked it onto the screen pages of this wretched cartoon of a movie. Whereas Uma Thurman was once the ultra-cool diva of "Pulp Fiction," she is now the psychopathically vengeful Bride in Tarantino's latest character incarnation. I found so few redeeming qualities in her characterization that I twice looked over at the Exit Door to verify that it was still there, as the plot continued to spiral into its inevitable death swoon. I cannot put into words how despondent my friends felt after enduring the hours of spurting blood and gratuitous violence that was offered up by this half-assed script. The only saving graces to this film were the few artful touches that Tarantino brought to a few segments of his abomination of a film. The bamboo water-catcher marking time in the House of Blue Leavers sword sequence and the School Bus arriving in the background of the initial battle with Vivica Fox are the only redeeming visions that I retain of this film. The rest is all filled with fanboy wet dreams of sophmoric perversion and almost-pornographic gore. This movie leeches so much from other genres that it lacks even the semblance of its own individual personality. If there was a petition to keep KBV2 from reaching theatres, trust me, I would sign it in a heartbeat! Expand

Kill Bill Vol. 1 is the most exciting movie I have ever f.....g seen. Well, OK, half a movie. Black Mamba (Uma Thurman) has been sent into a coma by an attempt on her life by Bill's (David Carradine) crew of assassins, of which she was one until she wanted out to get married. Coming out of a 4 year coma, she starts a globe trotting revenge tour with her "kill list 5." Here are just some of the movie style characters she portrays on her road to comicbook superheroine revenge satisfaction: Samurai Swordswoman, Helmeted Alien Inquisitor, Knocked-up Texas Bride, Raging Feminista, Jesus H. Christ, Frustrated Mother and Housewife, Bubble Headed Blonde American Tourist, Shapely Video Game Warrior. Scrutiny of movie genres is on the plate as KBV1 eases onto the screen: the mood is struck with the very first image of "Shaw Scope Film Presentations" oriental style placard. Is it a martial arts film? Then the black title card of a jokingly attributed quote, is it a bow to the silent film? A parody? Followed with the black and white film stock, is it a western? Heroine Black Mamba's beaten face in extreme close up as the unseen Bill intones "You probably think me sadistic." Is it noire? Black Mamba saying "Bill, the baby is yours." Is it a mystery? We are given tastes of all these styles of movies and characters in KBV1 and, more often than not, all on the same fork. Or chopstick if you'd rather. KBV1 starts with a close up on gore, fills itself with fantastic, action packed gore, and ends with the threat of tender sudden death. This is not the intensity most audiences settle into without some kind of respite: a love interest, childhood flashbacks, long minutes of tedious exposition with minor characters, or some other mindless distraction to appease their soggy entertainment needs. Here Tarantino gives us "Okinawa, one way" as the essential dialogue to start us on our trip. We don't want or need to know where she gets her money, where she lives, etc etc ad nauseaum. Just give us what we need to propel the action. She's flying off to get her revenge. Thats all we want to know and see. Let me use an example of unnecessarily graphic depictions of violence to help illustrate Tarantino's effective use of cinematic brutality. In the mawkish directing talent of Clint Eastwood (I would not miss a Sean Penn performance, even directed by Pee Wee Herman) I winced at the violence in "Mystic River." Twice. I think it is a failure of filmmaking if your story's tension is so thin, your intent so flimsy, or the consequences so vague, that you can't trust your audience to imagine all the aspects of the impact of a kick to a characters face, without actually having to show the REPEATED kick to the face. The wince added nothing to my understanding of the human pain. Tarantino's brutality usually avoids "real" human violence. In Reservoir Dogs, for instance, he only intimates VERY STRONGLY the cop's ear actually being cut off. The tension is so palpable, when the built-up moment comes, the camera skips to the ear landing on the floor, we feel the pain, and have all the impact we need and desire. The payoff satisfies. Yet Tarantino's ultra-violent sequences are integral, indeed, fundamental, to this story, and set moods of amusement, shock, toe-tapping musicality, athletic endeavor, even subtle and striking beauty. So f..k you Clint. The vast majority of good stories involve some kind of violence, if not to the body then to the soul. (As the matter of fact, doesn't a lot of memorable real life history involve horrendous violence?) When you are paying homage to a vast number of different movies, as Tarantino does, it's natural that you would use vast, different, and relentless physical and emotional violence to do it. In KBV1, Black Mamba does some terrible things to people outside of her superhero circle. In these scenes the actual slashing or aftermath is more implicit than explicit. We see her biting her rapist's lip, the camera swings away and next we see, he is on the floor, dead. The payoff still satisfies. Once Black Mamba is in the realm of superheroine however, all bets are off. Blood gushes like uncapped fire hydrants, eyes are ripped out, legs shot and sliced off in operatic, rhythmic, stylish and juicy fashion. Once the animation sequence takes you to that giddy level of involvement and awe, the sequences of a simple motorcade traveling so stylish and enthralling, I had tears in my eyes from the effectiveness of some of the scenes. The House of Blue Leaves scene is a masterpiece of martial arts action. The mayhem gears up with long takes following our heroine, jolts us into the seriousness of her intentions, then builds up the best 20 minutes of cinematic violence ever filmed. Just when the action is climaxing, another rocking oldies song starts and kicks it into a higher gear of swinging, slashing, and spinning madness. Then the lights go out and another cinematic miracle happens before your eyes as Black Mamba fights as if in a "computer chip" (as my 12 y/o nephew called it, in this day of Celebrity Death Match and stickdeath.com) against a blue screen. There are 3 left to be vanquished in KBV2. And I don't even need it. Vol. 1 has thrilled me like no other movie in my life. Vol. 2 is bound to be pure icing on the cake. I f..king love this movie. Period. Well, half a movie. Period. Expand

There are no adjectives to describe other than this was pure sh.t. Too much violence, no plot, just a meandering mess of a movie. Yes, I was very much looking forward to a QT masterpiece, but instead, this was nothing more than the usual commerical garbage that Hollywood churns up capitalizing on a name. A pretty good movie. Is the violence excessive? Perhaps. So, essentially, whether you like the movie depends on how much you appreciate stylized gore, and the cartoonish depiction of serious issues. Overall, I found it fairly entertaining.

Matt L firstly neither you or Stan are correct, the man is okinawan, though classed as Japanese I would think any okinawan would be offended to be called that LOL! though there is a LOT of history and its not as simple as I just said, I believe it would be best to term him as okinawan.... As for the film it wont be everyones cup of tea as you need to go with the attitude of what the film is about or you will think it is stupid (wires on the plane etc) and corny. If you like this sort of thing you will LOVE it. Its certainly pretty unique in this day and age.... Expand

Stan J, you're a complete idiot. This movie had awesome visuals and the fighting were spectacular. The guy is JAPANESE, not Chinese. Can't you tell the difference between 2 completely different cultures? Get your facts straight, kid.

I just saw this for the first time on DVD. While I appreciate the extreme stylishness of this movie (parts of it are extraordinary, both funny and startling) by the end of it I found myself simply bored by tedious dialogue, cartoonish violence and self-indulgent, padded (even swollen) scenes that should have been cut down or out. I understand that it's an homage to movies that QT loves -- that's clear. But this movie certainly didn't make me love it or them, and it left me instead with a sense of its essential emptiness. I wouldn't call it a waste of time, because even QT's failures are interesting, but it was a bit of a yawn. Ah well, to each his or her own, I suppose. Expand

Well, it's not deep or anything, but it's fun, cool and entertaining. If you want to see a movie full of stuff that makes you think, this isn't a good movie. If you want pure entertainment and meaningless violence, it rocks.

There is no plot. Here is the plot - Uma wants revenge, and she is involved in 4 fights. There is also a scene where she talks to a Chinese guy and he gives her a sword - that's the movie. The fights are boring - it is like looking out your window and watching kids play cops and robbers with tree branches [in the "movie" they use dummy swords]. It is predictable and formulaic. After I finished watching it, I haven't spent any time thinking over any of it. If you want to watch it, then wait until they show it on network TV... Expand

QT needs to decide whether he wants to be (just) an iconoclast, or a storyteller with something to say. Fight scenes are tedious (rather like the Matrix nonsense) and the story line is pretty limited, while the characters are just mannequins to be chopped up in an over-grizzily manner. It may be a masterpiece in terms of a variety of techniques and his knowledge of them, but they don';t really need to be explored in the same place at the same time. I didn't pay for the film to be impressed by his knowledge, but to be entertained, amused, challenged to think, none of which apply. Back to my Pulp Fiction video... Expand

Kill Bill, Volume 1 is a great example of a fantastic movie. Tarantino succeeds while directing the film in Tokyo, California, and Texas. Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu both play the parts of assassins beautifully. The directing is beautifully accepted. The suspense and drama of this story combine to make an invigorating work of art.

This is a test as to how good a movie is. I knew that there is a sequel out there and there might be a third movie released too. If this movie were good than I would look forward to seeing the sequel. As it is, I have no interest in seeing the second movie or seeing the third. This is the worst Tarantino movie ever!! The animation part was completely boring and he rest of it was just sword swinging for an hour. Why did he make two sequels? Expand

A superior popcorn flick, both entertaining and hilarious. The anime piece in the middle of the film was brilliant, and was vital in creating the fantasy amosphere the story needs to be successfull.

This is one of the greatest movies of all time. Just the way that they set up the scenes and then execute all of the cool scenes. I am saying this from a director's point of view and this has to be one of the greatest movies of all time. I have already seen it about 200 times and it is still one of my favorite movies and it hasn't gotten old yet.

Does not have the comprehensive outlook of Pulp Fiction, but the victims are more plentiful and bleed much more profusely. Tarantino fans will quickly realize that he continues to be lucky to have Uma Thurman facilitating his quirky intensity. The plot is basically Thurman's character out to slay five selected persons who wronged her, but she is perfectly willing to dispatch a few hundred of their associates on the fly. As such she does not lend herself well to complex character exposition. But if you buy into the state of affairs inferred upon comatose hospital patients in Texas, you don't care. It's a pathetic story riding a riveting presentation, and as a bonus it solves the age old dilemma of how your average American housewife should break off a knife fight when her daughter comes home from school. Bring on Part II. Expand

Genius. Absolute genius. It's actually NOT gory. And it's actually NOT that violent. It's beautiful, and stylish. The Bride vs. the Crazy 88's is a display verging on the poetic. And the critics from the San Francisco Chronicle, the Wall St. Journal and the New Yorker have made a fools of themselves. I can understand a critic having reservations and some objections, but anyone who has ever loved movies will see at least a love of film in ample evidence on that screen. Perhaps a condor raking their privates with its razor sharp talons would snap them out of their torpor. Expand

Honest reveiw, better than average but not a classic-yet. The thing we all need to consider, love or hate it is that Kill Bill ISN'T FINISHED YET! Now the supposed violence didn't get to me because it was so cartoonlike and obviously fake. It was a big risk for Quentin to do that and run the risk of his movie being called fake. He did it like an anime movie so it wouldn't be so violent. Now can we talk about the brilliance of this man's casting? Always choosing the right peolpe for the job and not just the a-list folks. Let's not forget the salute to Japanense fighting movies like Game of Death even down to the striped yellow jumpsit. I just wish that this was a finished film rather than a plot to make more money. I would've gladly sat through 4 hours of Kill Bill. ...and you know they're gonne relase it that way anyway, don't you? When Kill Bill vol. 2 comes out? As a double feature? Money is always the bottom line. Expand

One of the coolest movies this year. Yes, it is extremely gory to the point of absurdity, the profanity is horrible, and it has some elements in the plot that are just wrong (yeah, like that...ahem), but Kill Bill is honestly just a good time. The action is upbeat and very well choreographed, some of the best fight scenes since Cowboy Bebop. There are also countless homages to old school kung fu flicks and anime, which I really appreciate. If you can handle the ridiculous violence, then go see KB right now. Great movie. Expand

I have figured out that there are two types of people in this world, those that think QT is a genius and those who think he is completely full of it. For those in the latter, I feel bad for you. Kill Bill was the most incredible experience I have ever had in a movie theater. Everything was first rate. Ending set up vol 2 nicely. I think as a whole, we'll find out that there is more to kill bill than shown in vol 1. Expand

Kill Bill is absolutely one of the best, if not the best movie out so far this year. The people giving it 0's obviously can't get over the violence factor to appreciate its unique style and all the great detail brought in from the movie genres that this movie is based on. Although gory, it's the kind of over-the-top gore and violence that begins to become desensitizing on purpose. If Tarantino had wanted, he could have made the gore 100 times more realistic. Instead he is poking fun and paying homage to those kung fu movies, and revenge flicks where all these elements (simple plot, fake gore, no character development) are done just by accident as a result of bad filmmaking. Here it is all done on purpose...some people understand that and can smile, and some people can't. On another note, I really appreciated Uma's performance in this, being someone who has never thought she was that pretty nor talented, but she really shines in this movie. Expand

Very violent trash without any redeeming qualities. Cult status makes this a hit with some twisted minds. If killing mothers in front of 4-year old daughters is entertainment that there is something wrong with me? I don't want to hear the crap that this is a satire. Pure unadulterated vile trash.

DO NOT watch this movie for satire. DO NOT watch this movie if you'd rather laugh at things than laugh WITH them. DO NOT watch this movie if your expecting a Hong Kong style Kungfu flick (it's more of a samurai flick). DO watch this movie if you love sincere straightforward movies of any kind. Sincerity is this movies strong point. This movie believes in itself every step of the way, and if you pay attention you will too. As ridiculous as some of the scenes may sound in synopsis, they play out with such gravity that they take you out of the theatre and into the story. Watch this movie if you love good storytelling. I failed to see one redeeming quality in this violent piece of trash. Sorry, but let's say we agree to disagree. Avoid at all costs.

One of the best movies of all time!!!! This movie doesn't deserve the put downs its getting for violence. The violence is so unrealistic and cartoon-like that it doesnt even gross you out.
