Last Night is on to something fascinating. It meditates on the meaning of adultery: the purposes it serves, beyond sex.

An aptly gorgeous-looking Manhattan meller whose quartet of sexy actors proves no less attractive than the well-mounted picture as a whole.

Somehow less than the sum of its very impressive parts. Massy Tadjedin brings out the best of her strong cast but all the eyeball-melting beautyon display and the highly polished treatment of the story could have done with a touch of authentic grit.

Knightley and Canet make a far more compelling pair. As they wander through the city after hours, doing nothing more than talking, they generate the kind of romantic heat that's all too rare onscreen.

Nominally a story about sex, lies and faithfulness, Last Night is more truly a cautionary tale about mousetrap narratives.

It's the sort of movie that thinks cutting between two different stories makes it art. Usually, it feels like an exercise in art. There's a lot of calisthenics but very little beauty or truth or whatever it is the movie is going for.

Suspenseful though it is, the movie is quiet to the point of being sleepy, and Worthington is simply not working out as a screen star.

First-time director Massy Tadjedin conjures some essence of constrained desire, but mostly from the architecture.

Writer-director Massy Tadjedin cuts back and forth between these twin temptations. Will Michael succumb and prove Joanna correct in her suspicions? Will Alex's French accent conquer all? Do you care? I didn't.

The glossy Manhattan footage, as hermetic as Woody Allen's rendition of New York, is engagingly expensive-looking at least, but the cast is barely given anything to work with.

Given how prominent the postcard sultriness of her backdrop is compared with the story's emotional ping-pong, all she ends up with is a kinder, chicer Adrian Lyne movie.

Last Night is a sex tease, but that makes it sound more exciting than it ever becomes.

Last Night is a New York morality play: A film in love with (lower) Manhattan that is suspicious of real romance. What it lacks is Allen's sense of horseplay; his appetite for lunatic adventure. When you take a bite of the Big Apple, you're not supposed to nibble.

  1. A really entertaining romantic drama. Really good performance from Keira Knightley and believe it or not but when Sam Worthington isn't trying to cover up his accent he can actually act. The two main supporting characters do a good job at providing temptation for the Worthington and Knightley. But what I really liked the tone and atmosphere of the movie. It takes place in the city at night over one night. It had a very cosmopolitan feel to it, like everything is laid back, cool and easy flowing. A solid movie. 8/10. Full Review »

A realistic and occasionally insightful film about love and betrayal. All the characters seemed real and interesting, with the exception of Sam Worthington's, who lacked some depth. The idea that the film isn't sexy enough is missing the point; its not about sex but about relationships and how to juggle them when you care about two people who wants and needs conflict. It successfully portrayed how appealing an affair can be but also how much meaning a marriage still holds. Full Review »
  3. Even though we were just 2 of 6 people in the theater on Saturday night of opening weekend, I thought this movie should have been given a much wider release and a marketing push. Knightly and Worthington are excellent, as is Knightly's old flame Guillame Canet. In a much smaller role, Griffin Dunne is extremely effective. He seems a little slick and libertarian, but offers the most unexpectedly "moral" perspective of anyone. The film focuses on the "big" issues and doesn't dwell on the petty issues of getting caught like most movies of its ilk generally do. The ending is excellent... Full Review »
