Lock Stock and two Smoking Barrels has been called the British version of Pulp Fiction. While I'm not sure where they got that from, seeing how the movies are almost nothing like each other. However, I can concure that Lock Stock is almost, if not, as good as Pulp Fiction. The story is about four samll time criminals that enter a high risk poker game. The game is riged and they end up owing a half a million pounds to one of London's most feared mob bosses or they will all lose their fingers. The movies plot gets a lot more complicated with the introduction of ganja growing neighbors, a hitman that lets his son go out on hits with him, but doesn't like using foul language around him, and a lot more interesting characters. The movie is fast paced and stylish. The camera work is amazing. The speed ups and slow downs and freezes seem so natural yet they add a ton to the film. The acting is almost flawless. The only fault is that if you aren't British or you don't know British slang, some of the dialogue might be hard to follow. The film is pretty funny too, if you couldn't tell by the decription of the hitman. However, it isn't hilariously funny. The point is though, is that the movie is fun to watch. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the soundtrack. The movies soundtrack has some extremely awesome songs. My favorite being "Hundred Mile High City". The music is the second best music I've heard in a movie. I would definitely also recommend the sountrack to this movie. Overall, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is fast, fun, and stylish trip into the British underworld that you should check out if you are a fan of fast paced crime films. Expand

Brilliant plot development. Guy Ritchie proves that he has what it takes with this movie. It outshines, dare I say it, Quentin Tarantino and Pulp Fiction.

Great plot, not much of an exagerration, very humourous: overall.....ver entertaining. This movie sort of looks at the lighter side of underworld crime. I would say i enjoyed it more than pulp fiction. The ending gives you something to think about. Great name for the movie, very creative. Guy Ritchie is the man........keep it up mate!!!

An intelligent, stylish comedy that I absolutely loved. The Humour, although subtle at times, is as funny as in any movie I've seen. Ritchie does a marvellous job.

An interesting idea on which to place a movie, it would seem, but "Lock, Stock" just doesn't have the humerous punch that it could have had to make it legendary. It's also so boring it's criminal.

I know I'm not stupid. But in ever Guy Richie film, I have no idea what in the hell is going on. I fell asleep in this movie. What a waste of money buying it.

The film is not great because of its comedy, but for its style, editing and pacing. I'm not exactly sure why people saying "Jesus Christ" is supposed to be rip-roaringly funny. The delivery of most of the jokes (supposed or not) just isn't done very well. The characters themselves are the reason Ritchie's films are so good. Even if you don't like them, you *must* pay attention, and they're almost always totally watchable. Vinnie Jones has to be one of the coolest badasses of all time! Personally, I think Snatch, though very much a copy of this movie, is the better of the two. For pure entertainment, this movie is hard to beat. If you haven't seen this movie, by all means rent it, and then proceed to rent Snatch. They're both great movies! Expand

The crititcs are smoking dope. This is a gritty, funny, film in the same vein as Pulp Fiction (though British). It's the anti-chick flick. If you have a pair, you'll dig this movie.

Critics score is 66??? WTF This is an amazing movie. Some funny moments in it, and entertaining from start to finish and plenty of memorable lines. In my opinion (i think im not alone here) the best British movie ever made. Deserves all the praise it gets.

It was impossible for me to become involved with this film. None of the actors convinced me. Every line of dialogue they spat out sounded so forced, like they didn't believe in the characters they were playing. Some of the dialogue isn't very well written in the first place. There's one line that Dexter Fletcher said that goes "Also, I think knives are a good idea... Knives are good, because they don't make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them", and I thought to myself, Is this guy trying to sell me knives? Vinnie Jones was the only one who really impressed me. I wanted to see more of the guy. He played his part perfectly, nailed every scene he was in, and I loved that his character brought his son around for everything like it was "Bring Your Kid To Work Day". I also felt the narration by Alan Ford, you gotta love his accent, but I felt some of the stuff he narrated made it sound like he was talking down to me instead of telling me things I couldn't have figured out otherwise. It was condescending and intrusive, chiming in at all the wrong times. The only good writing is evident at the very end of the movie, the "cliffhanger" ending, which I thought was brilliantly scripted and played out. Another issue I have with the film is the dirty look it has. I know this is accounted for its low budget, but the amber lighting and the heavy grain, it's not a pretty mix, and it's one of the ugliest-looking films I've ever seen. Expand

The plot is complex yet understandable and enjoyable. The comedy is pretty good. Their English accents are not good but it doesn't get in the way of the film that much, cause it's a comedy you can't take it too seriously.

    A half-funny, half-ugly comedy about underworld ineptitude. [5 Mar 1999]
  2. The best one can say is that it's a smart cartoon, and a fairly exhausting viewing experience.

Though Ritchie’s screenplay scores a 10 for sheer complexity and cleverness, it rates much lower down the scale for comprehensibility and audience involvement.
