This sucker was about a half hour too long. And that $40K/month psychologist annoyed the living hell out of me. This is a portrait of a band whose last good album ("And Justice") was hitting it big in 1987. Since then, it's pretty much been zzzzzzz..... As long as they keep playing the stuff from Kill 'em All, Ride, Puppets and And Justice, I'll be a fan, but it might be better to burn out than fade away. Props to Jason N. for hitting the road on these guys. And does Kirk have a penis? What a freakin' pushover. Expand

As a metallica fan I really wasnt sure what I was in for. I had seen Paradise Lost so i was curious as to how this movie was going to directed. I thought the close up look at one of the worlds truly great bands was amazing. The glimpse at life behind the stage was pretty intense, i.e. the need to be artistic, the downfall of james, the therapy sessions, the interview with Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, whoa all truly amazing. As the band ages i find some of their music doesnt quite fit but given the fact that they are not 19, Life looks totally different. St. Anger seemed to be the bands therapy. A must for any fan and a must for a fan who wants to see well produced documentary. As for the met fan , the ending will give you the shivers and you ll be aching for a show! Expand

A fantastic piece of work. Dark, insightful, emotional, redemptive, oddly funny and entirely human. Well recommended, whether you?re a fan of the band or not.

Maybe I would have given a crap if Metallica hadn't sucked for the past 10 years or so, as if they were that fantastic to begin with. Plus, why the hell are we getting a movie about Metallica while they're still alive and together?

Speaking as an erstwhile Metallica fan who feels the band cheesed out in '91 with their "Black Album," I found this movie to be both funny and engrossing. Some of the humor is of the unintentional variety. These guys aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, and Lars in particular is a pretentious jerk. Nonetheless, watching them spill their guts to each other is absorbing, and some of the bitch sessions have an unexpected emotional power. All the years of poor communication within the band have taken their toll. The side interviews with ex-bassist Jason Newsted bring this idea home, and the session with ex-guitarist Dave Mustaine is particularly riveting in this regard. You'd have to be a stone not to feel his pain. The therapist comes across mostly as an insecure clueless wannabe, but he must have done something right because these guys had obviously gotten on each other's last nerve by the time he came on the scene. I find their recent albums, including St. Anger, to be increasingly irrelevant given their advancing age, but I give them credit for showing so much of themselves, much of it unflattering, as they struggle along. A must for once and current (are there still any?) fans of the band. My own interest in the film comes in part due to knowing the band's backstory, so I can't speak to the appeal of this film for someone who knows or cares not of heavy metal. Expand

To Michael R., just because their musical stylings have changed a bit in the last several years does not mean they suck! Metallica has grown musically and a need to explore different sounds and styles shows they are not afraid of idiots like you who criticize them for not staying the same. They are not 18 anymore! You're probably one that started hating them just because they cut their hair! Regarded by many as one the best, and most original metal bands ever, Metallica continues to deliver amazing, bruising, blistering, metal. Think they suck lately? Go see a show, still the best live band I've ever seen. They are there everytime for their fans, to deliver all the old favorites, up to 3 hrs and 5 or 6 encores. I guarantee you'll leave the show happily soaked in sweat, body bruised, feeling a little "whiplash", ready to "break some sh*t!" After almost 25 years of uncompromising brilliance, they deserve more than just a movie, an induction into the r&r hall of fame would be nice, and you don't have to be dead for that! And did you even see the film? I'm "madly in anger w/you!" Expand

Easily the most poignant and relevatory portrait of musical artists ever put on film. I'd definitely rank it with Pennebaker's "Don't Look Back" in terms of how great it is. I cannot recommend this movie enough for fans of documentaries (although the movie has a much more structured narrative than many Hollywood movies). One of the five best documentaries of 2004. Rent it!

The movie brings to light the artistic process that all bands must face, especially once the bloom is off the ol' rose, and thanks to excellent work by the directors, it's pretty damn funny to watch. It's also fascinating to see how a metal band struggles to find a "newness" in such a narrow road of creativity. Hammett tries using a vibrator on his leads, the result half-amazing, half-sh.t. Ulrich trying not to cover the same beats he's laid down so many times before, again with sadly hilarious results. Hetfield sulking and trying to set 'hours of work" where no one can deviate or discuss outside of. The movie, like the band, eventually succeeds at coming out even funnier than Spinal Tap. Expand

Some Kind of Monster is a re-re-reloaded pile of steaming crap. Come on! Get in touch with your inner f***ing feelings? How about a band who just f***ing rocks? Pathetic, just pathetic. What next? Dr. Phil on tour with Megadeth? Here is a metal movie idea for you... BASH BASH BASH the f***ing universe. After this film, Metallica now OFFICIALLY deserves to loose metal music awards to Jethro Tull. Pathetic. Expand

Surprisingly, this is a very good movie, filled with humor, emotion, and reminders of what's really important in life. It's very easy to draw "Spinal Tap" comparisons here, but ultimately, this is a movie with more meaning and humanity. As we enter Metallica's scene, we see a group, who after 24 years together, is on the verge of collapse. They lack a permanent bass player, their morale is low, one member is suffering from an alcohol problem, one member is suffering from a chronic case of "foot-in-mouth" syndrome, and another quietly sits on the sidelines, resigned to his fate of being continuously trampled on and underappreciated by the others. As the story evolves, however, there is humor as we see inflated egos threatened, the thrill of seeing their once-killer energy re-enter, and er-- reassurance as we see them come together with help from a fuzzy-wuzzy new-agey therapist who helps the band understand their 'feelings' (only to see himself fired from Metallica's payroll after the band experiences a renewed sense of camaraderie that renders the man unnecessary). All in all, Some Kind of Monster is a documentary that can be appreciated by all music fans, and has a universal message of hope and triumph over adversity that has relevance far outside the context of the movie. Who would have thought it could come from Metallica? Expand

Warts n all documentary following Metal behemoths Metallica & the making of their album, St. Anger. Entertaining is probably the best way of putting this documentary. I neither love or dislike Metallica but I do enjoy music documentaries & this has lots of squabbles, ego clashes & musical differences including singer/guitarist James Hetfield leaving for six months to go into rehab. Lars Ulrich does start to grate a bit but there's no denying the talent that these people have, even if they are no longer the garage band/everyday Joe's they used to be. If you love Metallica, you'll love this but it's also a good watch for general music fans too. Expand
