What "Monster-in-Law" is really about comes to light indirectly when Gertrude (Elaine Strich), Viola's mother-in-law, acknowledges that Kevin (Michael Vartan) is marrying a Latina (that would be Jennifer Lopez). It's curious, and lazy, that there's no scene in which Kevin hashes things out with his mother about her rejection of Charlie as the next Mrs. Fields. Undoubtedly, Michael would ask his mother if perchance that race might be the reason for her qualms with the ensuing engagement. "Monster-in-Law", however, is too dishonest to admit that it's really "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". Michael never learns that the two women in his life are quarreling because such provocation would get in the way with the film's agenda to be aggressively vapid. If Viola was played by a Latino actress like Elizabeth Pena, or a Maria Conchita Alonso, somebody not as instantly recognizable by White America as a byproduct of the popular culture, "Monster-in-Law" would have a harder time in pretending that race is a non-issue. That this has been one of 2005's biggest commercial successes is a shame. So much of the money used to buy tickets for it could have been spent on dozens of superior films. Paying under $4.00 to see it on video, and there were two of us, was bad enough, but the #16.00 it would have cost us in a theater would have been criminal. This was a film that wanted to be a number of things and so wound up being none of them. Expand

The film is hilarious, its a fun time at the movies and you will laugh. Fonda is excellent and everyone will enjoy. Dont go into this film expecting Fonda to be very "Oscary" she is amazing but critics cant see that she nailed the role.

Like that other bad recent romantic comedy, A Lot Like Love, the only thing that saves this film from complete awfulness is the supporting roles. Adam Scott and Annie Parisse, relegated to the obligatory wisecracking and advice-spewing friends, are truly funny and down to earth characters that livened up each scene they were in. Lopez does a fine job of playing a wealthier version of her character in "Maid in Manhattan"...or a less-tough version of her character in "Out of Sight". Vartan, so good each week on "Alias", is probably the dullest and plain-vanilla love interest since Keanu Reeves appeared in "Sweet November". He makes a comment to Lopez on the beach about her eyes that actually almost made me wish that the Lumiere brothers in 1895 had never had the idea to project a moving image to people. I mean seriously...it's that awful. Jane Fonda is great as she always has been (age has certainly been kinder to her than her contemporaries) and she is pretty damn good as this evil-meglomanical bitch from hell. Wanda Sykes I guess wandered over to the set one day and the director decided to put her in the movie, as there is no real reason for her to be in it. Expand

A genuinely funny, and fun, movie (to me). Unfortunately comedy is one of those highly subjective things, but I think a lot of people will really appreciate the light comedy here. Michael Vartan really surprised me in this film; his character was likeable and charming, if just a tad cheesy. Jane Fonda's character was, in a word, fabulous (which I think her character would highly approve of). It was fun watching this melodramatic lead. I also found it refreshing that this pogressive film didn't make race an issue in the slightest. Wanda Sykes' character was thoroughly enjoyable, with some of her trademark adlibbing. The only character I wasn't entirely fond of was Lopez's. The character changed a bit too much from opening to closing scene, and it was hard to sympathize with this character after she started fighting back. Overall, this is a movie I would highly recommend to any non-snob, because I am sure snobs will find plenty of reasons to dislike this film... I might be able to summarize this by saying "If you liked Legally Blonde, you will surely enjoy this." Expand

Gosh, this was a really bad movie. This is a new low for J-Lo, and that's saying something. The gags run from mildly annoying to downright life-threatening. Notice 'funny' was no where in there. The plot is especially thin and uninvolving, even for this kind of movie. I found my attention wandering while I watched it, which I don't think has ever happened to me before while I watched a movie. Wanda Sykes puts in a pitiable performance as the comic relief. Her Greyhound commercials were funnier. Every actor and actress in this has done much better work. Avoid this film at all costs. Expand

There is great chemistry between Lopez and Vartan. Fonda plays the character for all she is: a woman who wants to protect her only child from being hurt in love. At times a laugh out loud comedy with great writing and comedic timing. The story does get better when Lopez finds out that Fonda is playing her and then turns the tables!

How do you go about recommending a really crappy movie in which the lead performance is really something to see, but STILL doesn't erase the fact that it's in the service of a really crappy movie? Jane Fonda, in her first lead since Old Gringo, plays the Future Husband's Mother From Hell with all stops out and absolutely no sense of actorly vanity or self-protection; completely unafraid to present herself as the monstrous character of the title, she completely reinvents her screen image and (for one movie's worth, anyway) erases MY image of many of her screen performances as too reserved and self-righteous. And to the inevitable chagrin of Fonda's political enemies who (not without total justification) envision her as a bigger traitor than Benedict Arnold and Judas Iscariot combined, Fonda at age 67 looks spectacular too. Despite her good work and great sportsmanship, not to mention capable support from Elaine Stritch, Wanda Sykes and Jennifer Lopez as Fonda's future daughter-in-law-but-not-if-she-can-help-it, Monster In Law is left standing at the altar by a hopelessly amateurish, unimaginative and unfunny script by Anya Kochoff (her first, and boy does it show) that talks itself and its audiencde to death. Director Robert Luketic has previously shown a real flair for making so-called chick flicks (Win A Date With Tad Hamilton and the first Legally Blonde) that DON'T send spouses and significant others running for the exits, but his touch escapes him here. Again, however, Fonda is so much having the time of her life that she just might almost convince you at times that you're doing the same. Put it this way: Want to see Hank Aaron play wiffle ball for two hours? Or hear Beverly Sills sing "I'm A Little Teapot"? Or check out a first-grade school assembly about fighting Mr. Tooth Decay, staged and directed by Orson Welles? Here's your chance! Expand

I'm no great fan or hater of Jennifer Lopez or Jane Fonda (how many of the critics can say that) , and this movie did make me laugh out loud even when I didn't want to. It's a good fun movie to take your girlfriend or wife to, just go with the flow of the movie and you'll have a great time. However I must agree that this movie did tend to wimp out of opportunities to enter into true dark comedy, the most serious and evil thing done in this film by one of the characters was never found out or dealt with. It leaves you waiting to see 'how's she going to react when she finds THIS out?' but it never happens. Greatness denied! Expand

The small parts of Wanda Sykes and Jane Fonda's mildly humorous and slightly below average degradation of Jennifer Lopez's character could not possibly outweigh the "monster" bomb this movie is. The plot is quite typical, a supposedly "down-to-earth" girl is looking for her dream guy and Prince Charming just happens to run in to them "...three times in two days. This must be a sign." Yeah, a sign of how moronic and unimaginative the plot line is. "Charlie", Lopez's character, and her "real" nature are about as believable as Lopez knowing "where she came from"(ref."Jenny from the Block"). I feel sorry for Wanda Sykes because she is a truly funny comedian but was tricked into being cast in the typical Hollywood black comedian role. She follows the main character around and offers some comedic relief with truly sophomoric timing and content. Jane Fonda was a somewhat convincing model of the stereotypical mother-in-law, however, the insults and attempts of sabotage were far too mild and, frankly, BORING. The clincher, pathetic. Quite predictable yet very unrealistic. Oh well, I guess went along with theme of the whole movie. Save your hard earned money(people should be PAID to watch it instead). If you saw "Gigli" and did not like it but want to give JLo another shot, do not waste your time watching this. I refuse to watch anymore of her future monotonous garbage. In short, amateur hour and fourty-two minutes of watching a 100 car train go by at 2mph. DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE!!! Expand

From the very beggining you can see that this is a movie full of romantic comedy clichés and silly situations. You tend to laugh from time to time but after 30 minutes of watching you get extremely bored. I mean, you can watch, but it's not fun anymore. Fonda's character is absoutelly unreallistic, so the performance screams FAKING. And Jlo plays a sweet and stupid girl. The script is dumb and the film is just a bunch of scenes that are trying hard to make you laugh. I highly recommend that you... GET AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE. Expand

JLo your performances lately have been about as solid as Jello (that hasn't quite set). Please at least try to fake that there's something real going on behind those pretty empty eyes. Jane's got a history of great films behind her and will survive stepping in this malodourous piece of canine scat. The biggest joke in this movie is the one pulled on the audience. Monster In Law stars Jennifer Lopez as Charlie, a dog-loving artist looking for the right guy. She finds it with Kevin, played by Michael Vartan, and they soon get engaged. Their life seems to be perfect- that is, until Kevin's overprotective famous mom (Jane Fonda) gets in the way. Monster In Law is a pleasant surprise for a romantic comedy, though it's far from perfect. Jennifer Lopez is likable, but her performance hardly required anything at all. The main thing that keeps the film interesting is Fonda and Wanda Sykes, her wacky assistant. Their chemistry is the main thing that keeps this film afloat, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a spin off. Expand
