It's a harsh lesson, but this movie is more than able to grab and hold your attention for it. I just wouldn't bring a date.
  2. A modest pleasure that accomplishes its goals with ease and confidence.

The director pulls back from the hotel, placing it against the skyline of our beautiful city, which appears to be waiting, patiently, for a more original exploration of its inhabitants.
  4. The visual intensity and the relentless degradation visited on the characters begins to feel prurient and dishonest.
  5. 38
Never decides whether it wants to be a black comedy, drama, melodrama or some combination of the three. The acting and direction are all over the map in this consistently depressing, if occasionally interesting, slice of life.

Rifkin milks the generic Bukowski-land setting for all its melodramatic potential, but what little grace his tale of precarious skid-row dignity achieves is pushed into the margins by predictable plotting and tiresome histrionics.
  7. It's Tommy's job to clean the peep booths surrounding her, and after viewing this one, you'll feel like mopping up, too.
  8. Adam Rifkin's dank, relentless drama puts you savagely through the wringer without bothering to enlighten or entertain.

While the homeless, the mentally ill and the generally downtrodden are scattered about like so much shabby furniture, Rifkin has no qualms about wallowing in their filth, but he misses the tragedy of their lives -- just as he misses everything else.

Cheesy, creepy, an exploitation flick with a budget but without the fun. Sam Moore stole the show, but probably tried to give it back after he saw the end product. Full Review »
