The result is a film that is presented as a kind of a fable, and a microcosm of a country whose fortunes once depended on oil.
Over the course of several years, Anabel Rodriguez Rios’ unsentimentally elegiac documentary Once Upon a Time in Venezuela quietly observes Congo Mirador being brought to its knees, to progressively powerful and enraging effect.
Ríos captures the village’s decline with a fair amount of affection and a keen eye for natural beauty.
The reason that Once Upon A Time In Venezuela is so effective is that it explores a microcosm of the events.
