Hey, this is a great flick capturing not only its time but examining timeless questions of what constitutes the creative process. Jagger does "Memo From Turner", a very early and still powerful rock video turn. James Fox's icy "performance" as a mob enforcer and subsequent identity breakdown in Turner's mansion led to a 20 year self-imposed absence from performing roles for this gifted actor. This is heavy stuff. Admittedly the working class English accents challenge some Yankee frequency ears. Like the dense and stunning visuals, the sound track demands your concentration. If you review/watch sitcoms for a living, I can understand how this material would be challenging. The opening image of a swooshing flyby from an SR-71 tells you it is going to be a rush of a trip. If you can handle Conrad and Faulkner and want a taste of The Sixties zietgeist, you will find "Performance" richly rewarding. Expand

Performance is a great film for those that want to feel verve and are willing to pay the cost of nonconformity. The dialogue has got liveness and the music has soul; the attitude is rock-and-roll ("I am alive and well. You push the buttons.") The pacing is good, and goes back-and-forth with tension and play throughout, right up to a memorable climax. The pacing is good, and goes back-and-forth with tension and play throughout, right up to a memorable climax. This is an arty kind of film, but is also challenging and edgy, with a fair amount of violence, sex, and drugs (mostly violence) in its look at what man is spiritually. The performances of Mick Jagger and Jamie Fox are very complementary, it has a naturally artificial feeling as they give each other a hard time and secretly love it (the bit where they are in bed together is pretty damn funny). This is the interesting 60s, where the setting is old but the vibe is fresh and unrestrained and un-50s. Expand

The narrative decays more quickly than the characters.
  2. Put Roeg's powerful cinematic style on the cultural map.

Performance seems more like eye candy than castor oil in the brave new world of "Freddy Got Fingered."
