Kevin Spacey brings another of his cynical, bitter characters to life -- very smart, and fresh out of hope -- but the movie doesn't give him much of anywhere to take it.

It was engaging at first, but the middle and especially ending don't live up to what it could have been. It's a shame, too, because there are many great actors in this. (Robin Williams was miscast in this though)
Basically, it's a depressing movie that gets slightly less depressing by the end.
You do wish Pate and writer Thomas Moffett had gone for more wit given the outlandishness of the melodrama since it would be more fun to laugh at this than take it seriously.
A nice film with a well-written but unbelievable script. The movements are truncated, and in doing so resolve to make no sense. Well-executed but underwhelming. Had they taken half-an-hour longer to make the character connections believable, it might have worked.

This film is about a psychiatrist who, after his wife's death and entry into the world of drugs, begins to question his ability to help his patients, despite his fame, success and the various famous clients he has among the Hollywood elite. The only solution to her doubts is the confrontation with Jemma, a middle-class girl who also suffers from an unresolved mourning and is the only person able to see things from another perspective.
This movie might have been good, but it's just plain messy. The pace is too slow and the characters are monotonous, uninteresting and poorly developed, with no connection between them and the audience. The film has a strong cast, full of sounding names like Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams, but there is no good material to give them and Jonas Pate's direction is absolutely incompetent. For example, Robin Williams never plays a character. He is limited to being himself saying decorated lines. With the exception of these two actors, who stood out to me because I know them, the rest of the cast merged into an amorphous, almost anonymous crowd. I had a hard time noticing who is who, to the point of losing my interest in the film. The task of watching it has become inglorious.
What does it matter if the sets and costumes are good, if cinematography fulfills her role well, if the soundtrack proved to be competent? If I, as a public, can not understand the film, if I do not feel attracted to the story and everything loses interest because it's boring, the movie is not good for me.
This whole movie wreaked of a commercial Hollywood production poorly disguised as an indie film.
"Shrink" was just trying too hard to be numb, just trying to hard to make us sentimental. I actually cringed at like 6 or 7 lines of dialogue. Kevin Spacey was great, but he was the only good one. It was all too coincidental, all too "Crash", all too corny. The subplots all were awful, except for maybe Spacey's. I have no idea what to take away from the movie, other than life ****, "But we're still here, and that's somethin'." Dallas Roberts' character was also pretty interesting, but ultimately his resolution was entirely unsatisfactory, and essentially a break in character on the part of the writers. The writers seemed possessed to force/cram every character into a character that's good at heart.
