  • Summary: Totally fascinating and often hilarious, this crowd-pleasing film follows tough-minded state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and court president Beatrice Ntuba as they help women in their Cameroon village fight difficult cases of abuse. With fierce compassion, they dispense wisdom and wisecracks in fair measure. (Women Make Movies) Collapse

This is a serious film, but it is also entertaining. Ngassa and Ntuba should be galvanizing figures for a nation stuck on "Judge Judy" and "Jerry Springer."

This is a story of real heroism that will leave you weeping, laughing and singing.

A compelling study of a small-town lawyer's determination to challenge Cameroon's institutionalised chauvinism, which judiciously combines small triumphs with a daunting sense of the task that lies ahead.

Almost as fascinating as the depiction of modern Cameroon law is the snapshot of how the 21st century has found its way into rural Africa. Cameroon has always been one of the more developed African nations, but the place where Sisters In Law takes place still consists mainly of tumbledown shacks strung together chaotically.

Inspirational stuff, and often hysterical to boot.

The movie is an absorbing series of one-on-ones. Local courtroom protocol is based on the British system; the law itself appears to be a complicated combination of tribal tradition, Muslim sharia, and government statutes.

If the film is meant to make us feel good about African justice, it does anything but.
