Though shocking violence and black humor run through the length of the movie, what comes through most strongly is its pessimistic political conscience; were the movie less earnest, it might seem Verhoeven-esque.
I like movies that have internal logic and rules. The premise of this movie is idiotic from both sci-fi & common sense angles. Snowpiercer is simplistic art. It's an ambitious dystopian sci-fi film. The characters are great. The cinematography and visionary style of the movie is excellent. There were some great moments in this movie and the action sequences are very well choreographed. I loved the plot and the whole movie. I was only getting disappointed by the ending of this movie otherwise it's a great SciFi movie.
Without “spoiling” it, it’s a film that at least opens up a possibility for change, instead of providing another rote reshuffling of power from the Black Hats back to the White Hats.
[Bong Joon-ho] combines a great cast, a gripping idea and a gorgeously grimy retro aesthetic to keep this eerie examination of the train wreck of humanity racing along.
Snowpiercer is bold and brutal and committed, but no setting, no matter how inventive or beautiful, can compensate for storytelling that strains plausibility even as it batters your senses and sensibilities.
Even as dystopian dramas go, the picture is arid and lusterless in its more serious moments and unpleasantly kitschy when it tries to soar over the top.
May I start off by saying that Tilda Swintons character, Mason, is creepy as all heck. This is a bleak and grim dystopian thriller with very much a them vs us feel to it - the well-off (i.e. upper class people) and the 'regular joe's' (i.e. working class people) - that would be a simplified description. The main plot concept is a little 'out there' its safe to say - im not sure its especially credible but then I don't suppose its meant to be. Some scenes are darkly lit and others feature many vibrant, almost neon colours, with the contrast between dark and light very clearly put across. Of course its a somewhat symbolic film - quite an arty film at that, I guess. Its a relatively good watch, with some interesting characters and a good cast but the plot concept is a bit hard to get your head around. I would recommend this film to fans of dystopian sci-fi films.
I love the idea, but the presentation is boring. The story has so much depth and possibilities that it's a shame this is just another action movie. I didn't watch this to see people fighting, I was intrigued by the display of this fresh dystopian scenario. In the end I'm not even sure what this movie is trying to tell me. It seems someone had this interesting background story idea and others filled the space with random stuff happening only so we can see the whole train before the end credits are rolling.
In short: for anyone who is interested in the story part, you will be disappointed.
This is A film like The train in The movie. Going nowhere. Boring and not worth using your time on.
If you don’t like trains and living in a small place.
SUCH an overrated film. It's bleak for the sake of being bleak and violent for the sake of being violent. It plays out like a video game with waves of bad guys and bosses who just keep coming. It pretends to be deep or have some broader message, but it's so obvious that only a dullard would find it truly meaningful. The first 45 minutes were really solid, but it started to repeat itself after that.
