Collectively, the mixed approaches illuminate a complicated man, at once spiritual and temperamental.
The usual doc mix of interviews and vintage photos is moving and surprisingly funny.
The documentary adroitly sustains interest with a standard-issue mix of archival material, interviews with intimates and admirers, actors’ voiceovers and dramatic re-creations.
It’s a fond and forgiving tribute to the man, filled with music that moves beyond happy and sad, and toward something like brilliance.
With artistic flourishes, N.C. Heikin’s documentary portrait fits the exceptional life story into a biographical boilerplate that covers the general trajectory and turning points.
