Like its predecessor, "Leon: The Professional," "The Fifth Element" is a visually striking piece of cinema with yet another jaw-droppingly entertaining performance from Gary Oldman. However, due to the damn near insufferable use of bad humor and a slew of insanely goofy plot elements, the film fails to win this viewer over entirely.

So ridiculous. I’m not sure if I liked the film or not, but I will certainly remember it as a very silly and whimsical sci-fi action movie aimed at kids, that is not meant to be taken seriously.

I do not think this is as good as most people say. Gary Oldman is especially good and there are many undoubtedly funny parts but other times it's just plain annoying instead of funny. The ending is dripping with romance and Chris Tucker is unbearable.

With dubious plotting, an undisputably daft idea of the future and irritating 50's b-movie style camp merged with a dated 90's European cinema look, The Fifth Element is still worth watching for its tongue in cheek humour, Bruce Willis' typically likable hero and for simply how unique it is. Whether for good or bad reasons, you'll never see another film like this again.

  1. What an attempt, and what a work of the imagination. The Fifth Element' will change the look of science fiction and will probably be imitated for years.
  2. The action is fast, furious, and as wacky as science fantasy gets.

It may or may not be the worst movie ever made, but it is one of the most unhinged.
