  1. Douglas brings a hilarious kind of Gordon Gekko assurance to his character, and Brooks' long-suffering, naggy persona -- which hasn't had a showcase this strong since "Lost in America" -- sparks off it like Hope with Crosby.
  2. Subtle it's not. Still, the film, directed by Andrew Fleming ("Dick"), gets large and plentiful laughs where it's supposed to.

Fans of the original may be disheartened by this glossier, action-packed version, but the brisker pacing and showy shoot-'em-up scenes are exactly what will appeal to the film's target audience.

Misses out on just about everything that made the original work, most notably Falk and Arkin, whose odd-couple pairing was the foundation on which the entire movie rested.

Kind of a "get smart" for the 21st century, very entertaining.

I'm a huge fan of Albert Brooks & the orig. '79 version of "In-Laws" terrific! But the only thing that even keeps this from being an all-out bad-film is it's 2 stars & still barely at that. I cannot recall one scene & this is a 1st for Brooks, that was a real funny-bit? Falk was perfect in first & Arkin was a good straight man. I like to compare films in own right though. & In any right, this soon to be gone remake is just about a total dud. & Candy Bergen has an asinine throw away cameo as well. Expand

Awful in the early going, finger poised over the remote to stop the pain, but it does become watchable while remaining insultingly stupid.
