Succeeds the same way the original comic books did: by making the conflicts and dilemmas basic enough for a five-year-old, while giving the heroes and villains glamorous outfits and layers of complexity, to thicken the broth.

Robinson's script is alive to the material's literary roots, although there is a sense that the brakes have been applied so as not to push into territory perceived as too esoteric for American teenagers.

The film wears out its welcome by the halfway mark, becoming a silly spectacle.
  4. What a riveting movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen might have been! And what a rickety mess it turned out to be when the people responsible lost faith in the origin of the material!

The murkiest-looking movie since Ben Affleck's “Daredevil” and about as lacking in charm.

Except for Connery, who is every inch the lion in winter, nothing here feels authentic.
  7. It's not brazenly bad or heroically bad or stridently bad. It's bad in all the old, dull ways of being bad: poor performances, absurd story, dreary special effects, witless dialogue and the excessive length of someone taking himself far too seriously.

One of the most awesome movies you could ever see. Everytime it's on, I like to watch it. Why the hell would these critics be so harsh?

If your looking for a unique action movie than this is for you, the plot is admittedly extremely simple, but this movie packs a punch in the action department with cool characters with unique powers, and some awesome special effects, all in all if you can put up with the simple plot and some bad acting from time to time this is a great action movie that will have you drooling over some of the super cool over the top moments. Sporadically entertaining with only somewhat passable performances, and an almost comprehensible story.

The League is far less than ordinary.
A very spontaneous and unexplained film with no apparent reasoning by any of its characters or their
actions. Decent acting, fair action scenes, but loses itself in its own confusion. Expand

"It's a Winchester. Modified, American Style." "'Bomb' voyage!" "The sound of treachery!" "To that end, I set my wolf among you sheep." -- "Growl." Thanks again, Hollywood. Expand

Easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen casually yet brutally violates its source material on an unimaginable degree, replacing the incredible atmosphere and amazing steampunk elements of the graphic novel with a slew of poorly developed characters and an incoherent plot. Clearly aware of the shortcomings of the story, the producers make a painful attempt to cover it up with stupid, boring, and gratuitous fight scenes that add nothing to the movie and came close to putting me to sleep. Plot and action alike are so poorly done that I spent the last 30 minutes of the movie in intense intellectual agony. Expand
