75Furtado's comic thriller is a telling commentary on modern avarice in Brazil and elsewhere, which touches on everything from "The Simpsons" to "Rear Window" along the way. Too bad it runs out of ideas before the overlong story is over.
-
75Manages to tackle some serious issues without sacrificing its inherently sweet nature.
-
70An enjoyable ride.
-
63An unassuming love comedy with plot problems.
-
63What could have been an effervescent 90-minute experience is so in love with the sound of its own voice that it develops genre trouble and piddles on for two-plus hours.
-
60It's too fundamentally light-hearted to wallow in grinding poverty and despair.
-
60There's at least one good movie in The Man Who Copied's 124 minutes, but Furtado never settles on it.
-
50This ambitious and sometimes entertaining Brazilian feature tries to pull off a tricky maneuver but doesn't quite get it done.
-
50Two movies in one, but it's no bargain. A charming romantic comedy... transforms awkwardly into a hedonistic crime thriller, with the two genres violently butting heads.
-
50It's uneven, but still pretty charming, and director Jorge Furtado's whimsical visual touches keep things lively.
-
40The movie never recovers from its jarring turn into a rushed, unconvincing caper movie with a blasé, Robin Hood attitude.
-
40Intermittently amusing.
-
In spite of some genuinely charming performances, The Man Who Copied is about as engaging as a paper jam.
-
30Never better than fair to middling pleasant.
-
A sad, wasted movie.
