  1. A non-thrilling occult thrillersolame and unoriginal that it would be an embarrassment for any director, much less a talent like Roman Polanski.
  2. A film that really has no idea what it wants to be, so it tries a little of everything, and does nothing very well.

The once-talented Mr. Polanski is hard to spot.
  4. A film not even a star as foxed and foxy as Johnny Depp himself could save.
  5. Most of the actors seem to have been issued one facial expression at the beginning of the film, along with pain-of-death instructions not to change it under any circumstance.
  6. 30
    Never quite becomes unwatchable.
  7. Reviewed by: Gemma Files
    A nonsensical mishmash.
  8. Reviewed by: Jay Carr
A supernatural thriller that is neither super, natural, nor thrilling.
  9. Polanski, generally, has fallen farther than Lucifer, and into a more profoundly depressing hell, the hell of utter banality.

A masterpiece that's highly underrated!!!! It's very hard to make a movie like that these days. Watch and enjoy THE NINTH GATE!!!! One of Roman's and Depp's best!!! Full Review »

I really liked this movie up until the end. Depp's search for the books and the variations he found among them was very interesting. However, I thought the end was schmaltzy and not in keeping with the rest of the film. The scenes involving the meeting of the secret society and the death of Depp's client were particularly silly. It could have been really wonderful had the end lived up to expectations based on the rest of the movie. Full Review »

Masterpiece, Polanski should be proud of this one.
A Dark occult feature, feels like a film noir although it is not, great performance by the
ensemble lead by Johnnie Depp. Full Review »
