Wow...the review from the scout team was thoroughly biased and unanalytical. However, the perfect scores are too generous. To give the real run on this movie, it is a very mixed bag. The movie is acted very well and takes big risks being an R rated comic book, being a very depressing and struting an anti-hero. This is a hero that has no power, no positive motivation, just a man so distraught he never so much as shows a smile. This movie however is stuck in a cliche premise as serious as it tries to be with action sequences that really aren't that innovative. Had the action sequences been thought over perhaps this would've been much greater. Yet the movie tries to avoid cliches of the happy ending and hooking up characters... At times the dialouge sparkles with Thomas Jane and other times it falls flat with the odd balls... This certainly isn't the best, but its definitely not the worst (Spider Man is the worst, guilty of its inconsequential and thematically dead story). The movie shows just how dark and undying revenge truly is as the character tries to convince himself "My actions are not revenge, they are punishment." We know better. Expand

I really liked this movie. The critics' reviews are pretty bad in my opinion. i can't see how they can give Hellboy (a bad, boring movie) good reviews and totally destroy this movie. This movie is very fun and cool. While the action sequences aren't anything new, they just look really good. And the critics are stupid when they talk about it being too violent. What did you think you were going to get with a movie named "The Punisher?" Its rated R for a reason. Anyway, sure this isn't Shakespeare people, its based off of a comic book! But its action sequences are cool and I think it takes plenty of time to develop a good story that isn't completely predictable. So if your looking for an entertaining action movie on a Friday night, this is your movie. Expand

OK, so this ain't no "X-Men" or "Spiderman," BUT...it acquits itself nicely from the more than unpardonable sin committed by the likes of "Hulk" and "Daredevil" -- it entertains. Although his performance is hit and miss (more hit than miss), Thomas Jane looks like he was born for this role. A better actor and director might have done more with the, again, hit-and-miss screenplay, but by all accounts, not an insufferable afternoon at the movies. Expand

[***PLOT REVELATIONS***] ?The Punisher? is a grim, ugly, violent cartoon grounded hard into reality. I could accept this as a revenge flick on either a comic book level or a reality level, but the film tries to bake a cake and eat it to. The problem with the film, other than its incalculable 1980?s derivatives, is that its violence is mixed poorly with its attempt at comedy. But that?s not all because there are plenty of unintentionally funny moments because the material is played so straight. This is a cold dish served in the worst possible manner, deep -fried to stale abandonment. Thomas Jane stars as the title character Frank Castle in this revenge flick uplifted from better revenge movies of the 1980?s. The film is played out in a very real world but still manages to make the hero unimaginably super. He is immune to shotgun blasts to insignificant body parts and can quickly recover from a blast to the head, while surviving with no noticeable scars. The avoidable plot starts with the death of Howard Saint?s son. He is killed in a misfire during an illegal weapons bust, which was lead by ?Thomas Jane?s? character. ?Travolta? men find out who he was, or is, and are sent to kill not only him, but also his whole whimsically placed family. They succeeded up until the point where they made sure that ?Jane? was dead. Despite shooting him in all the right places, he manages to survive the lead poisoning and is refurbished by a token black guy, like Djimon Honsou in Gladiator. And so Frank Castle begins is trek of not vengeance, but punishment, which is coincidentally a synonym for vengeance, but how can we expect a multilingual man to know that. The token black guy suggests that he look to God, he responds, ?God?s gonna sit this one out.? His punishment follows at a lethargic, plot-hole laced pace includes. After making sure it is impossible for him to be defeated with his contraptions of weapon accessory and automobile fortification, he starts his cavorting with explosions and ends them with a simple shoot out. The belligerent but indolent action scenes start and don?t ever seem to leave except when necessary to throw in the protracted apartment characters. Don?t these guys no that they are take up the punisher?s time from ass kicking. Obviously not, or they would have just left him alone instead of trying to be friends. Punishers have no time for friends, only uber vengeance. And plot holes are in abundance on his deliverance of evil. The easily predictable Livia Saint always goes to the movies on Thursday night. Curious it is that Howard Saint would let his wife do this when he knows Castle on the prowl, tearing up everybody involved in his family?s death. It is this mistake that leads to his evaluative demise. As far as the acting works, the capable Thomas Jane gives a slightly stellar Arnold Schwarzenegger performance, minus the accent. I would like to say that John Travolta is about this trash but he was in ?Battlefield Earth?, so he isn?t. Romijn-Stamos and the other roommates are at-level with their uselessness, and Will Patton, who plays the only two-dimensional character in the movie. In addition to its related crappiness with movies of eighties, this film also has real visually challenging cinematography and glaringly disconcerting set design. It is a real ugly film, with many blurry yellows, hazy blues, shady reds, and glutinous greens. It hurts the eyes because none of the colors are basic and just makes the film even less enjoyable. But my biggest quarrel with the film?s eighties-class nature is that it pays no homage to the time period at all. It is simply just as futile, ill-conceived, and predictable as the films from that era, yet it has no satirical points to make about it while it wants to be a throwback but is instead just that. The biggest problem with the film is that it is attempting to be both a comic book and a lively realistic movie. How do the filmmakers intend to do it this? By simply mixing funny moments (which coincidentally don?t come off as funny) with lifelike [inept] violence thinking it will work. Some may question this philosophy when I loved Kill Bill, a very violent but funny movie. The difference: Kill Bill is over-the-top and surrealistic in its violence while stylish and witty in its irreverent humor. If there are any redeeming qualities about the film, they are the unintentionally funny parts, like when The Punisher adopts a skull-faced t-shirt as his punishment logo and his fight with the wordless Russian (Kevin Nash) that tinkers a border of tediousness. In 1990, there was a Punisher movie starring Dolph Lundgren, which never got a theatrical release in the U.S. It was undeniable schlock, but cheekily enjoyable in its unrelenting, but enjoyably comic book violence romp. This version has elated production value, but is joyless, and is more intoned with misery of comics than with the exuberance of them. The film has come out in a month with another comic book adaptation (Hellboy) and several other revenge flicks. All of those movies are superior to ?The Punisher?. So if it?s a slick, venerable, revenge movie with excellent action scenes and witty one-liners, Kill Bill: Volume 2 is your more-than-serviceable answer. Expand

I really enjoyed this film. It wasn't made to impress critics with high expectations who've never read the comic and give harsh reviews. Behind the violence, justified by the actions the mob took against Castle, there is a story. This movie was based on a comic and stays loyal to it. If you're not a fan of the comic or action films, instead of trying to figure out reasons to hate it try and commend what the director and actors have brought forward. This film stays a lot more loyal to the comic than the 1989 film. The atmosphere of the comic is well recreated and and isn't just typical Hollywood bullsh*t. Expand

I commend this film for avoiding the recent trend to pack in as much CG and wire work as possible, like other recent comic book adaptions have. Thomas Jane did superbly in his roll, considering the script (or lack there of) he was given, he was the Punisher (and subsequently lended his voice to the video game). Travolta looked liked he just stepped out of Swordfish and contiued with the same role. His performance was awful. I was rather disappointed that the Punisher himself did not take arms until the last 20 minutes of the film. Hopefully the sequal will sitck to the old fashioned action style, and incorporate a more evenly paced script, with action a-plenty and of course Thomas Jane. Expand

Not the BEST film ever made, but definately on my list of the best 25. Great film, great cast. Some little inconsitencies from the comics sort of bugged me, but were excused by the mood and atmosphere that felt just as it should. Thomas Jane played The Punisher PERFECTLY, even if his hair wasn't slicked back as it should have been.

If you didn't see every single mind-numbing piece of "action" coming from a mile away, then you are some kind of retarded half-man, half-monkey hybrid. There is not one second of this movie that is not a cliche, there is not one line that hasn't been done a thousand times before - and better. The hero's final plan is to just walk into the gunfire and hope the script doesn't care if he gets shot. Naturally, it works. Insultingly stupid. 1 is about the number of IQ points someone would have to have to think this film was anything but horrible. If you want to tak about idiotic violence for violence sake so artlessly done then the punisher can be example number 1. It will probably fly under the radar however because it is so bad. Sometime it tries to be funny, sometimes it tries to be serious; it never tries to be good. I actually enjoy some of the actors in this film, but for them to choose to do this script seriously questions their state of mind. Somebody say, "Money!" Don't go see this film. Great, simply great. The critics complain about how dark and gory the punisher is but that is what makes it so good. I loved the movie, pretty good acting (especialy by Tom Jane) and it was by far the most intense superhero movie yet. then again the punisher isn't a superhero movie, its a "anti hero" movie. Do you know Spiderman? The guy who wears a red and blue costume and swings around with webbing? Well if he ever met the punisher he would probably swing away with a wet spot beween his legs. Tom Jane is the punisher, a Anti Hero who wants to make everyone who ruined his life suffer in the most extreme ways, He doesn?t care if he dies because Frank Castle is already dead. Only The Punisher remains after the horrible tragedy that happens to Frank and his family, his whole family. Who is behind the slaughter? Howard Saint (John Travolta). Castle dedicates his life to completely destroying Saint?s in almost every way. Castle gets some help from some of his new neighbours (social outcasts who have always been misunderstood). The acting is excellent. All the supporting characters both bad and good are very memorable. Travolta is surprisingly convincing as Saint and Tom Jane seems born for the film?s title role. The dialogue is pretty good, and the action is dark and intense. Some scenes are very memorable. I loved this film because of the way it differs from other films of it?s genre. I loved how Castle became swallowed up by the dark and spit back out as a man on an automatic revenge mission. Oh wait, it?s not revenge, its punishment. Movies like this are bound to get bad reviews but don?t let them stop you, chances are if you want to see this movie then you will like this movie. If not then chances are you won?t enjoy it. Me, I really liked The Punisher and it?s dark atmosphere. Expand

This is one great movie. Not only is it action packed, it has great actors, great fight scenes, a good story and some dramatic and funny scenes. However i do not recomend this to everyone because of the darkness that surrounds the film. Somehow, The Punisher seems believable compared to everyother comic book movie ever made. Its nice to see a hero based on pain instead of hero based on "saving the world." The Punisher is no goody two shoes but is a damn good film and it is truly a superhero movie that suits today's mostly twisted world. Expand

Vaguely reminiscent of the spate of revenge melodramas of the early 1970s that included Dirty Harry, Death Wish, Billy Jack and the original Walking Tall...except that most of those were either exceptionally well-made, convincingly if temporarily made their pro-vigilante points, and/or were emblematic of their time, and this numbing, unimaginative, endless,semi-pornographic junk has absolutely none of those qualities. Thomas Jane, looking a little like Steven Seagal and apparently trying to channel Charles Bronson's voice, does what I thought was impossible--he's so wooden he made me forget how good he was in Billy Crystal's baseball drama 61*. John Travolta delivers another hysterically bad, clenched-teeth performance no different than those in The General's Daughter and Domestic Disturbance; one more and it'll take till 2030 for that year's Quentin Tarantino equivalent to perform career CPR. As for Rebecca Rojmin-Stamos...well, she couldn't give Brian DePalma a competent performane in Femme Fatale, so why should she do so for Jonathan Hensleigh here? (At leat in the De Palma film she frequently took off her clothes.) My mother said to never leave without saying something nice, so I'll at least give Hensleigh credit for having the good taste and restraint to NOT show the murder of Jane's little boy onscreen,and...whoops! Come to think of it, I can't even give him credit for that. Expand

Excellent old-school action movie despite what these so-called critics say. Best action movie of last year. People forget Die Hard got crappy reviews when it came out then became a classic. Punisher is like a fine wine that will appreciated as it ages. Tom Jane is great actor and the screenplay - using elements from the Punisher's entire 30 year run - was brilliant. If you're a fan of the comic you know what I mean. No studio would release the Dolf Lundgren version in theaters it was so bad. This movie wasn't as horrible as critics made it out to be. It was full of action, which was good, Thomas Jane was a great fit, which was also good (even though he's not coming back for the sequel), I really liked this movie simply because I saw it as a "Marvelized" Batman. Tragedy, by seeing his loved ones shot down in front of him and then taking action not particularly for vengeance but as the Punisher says, "True Justice". Okay, this film ISN'T original, we get that. But nowadays, most films aren't! Yes it's clichéd, yes it's repetitive, yes it's predictable, but to be honest, I don't care. The action and violence is top-notch, and I don't know, something about vigilantes on quests for revenge and vengeance really gets me FRIGGIN' STEAMING. Films like The Brave One, Death Sentence, heck, even Batman to a certain degree. Thomas Jane was brilliant, John Travolta was good and believable and if you give this film a 0? Shame on you. That is harsher than harsh. The cinematography is shit I will admit, and alot of the bad guys, dialogue, the plot is clichéd but once again, I'm resorting to the famous WHO CARES? The plot isn't smart, the characters aren't smart, it's not realistic, it doesn't go into detail on the character of The Punisher enough and there are ALOT of inconsistensies with the film and the comic book, but at the end of the day, it made me laugh, and most importantly, it entertained me. Thomas Jane does an okay job as the leading male, but John Travolta hands in a very "phoned-in" performance, which has sadly been common for Travolta lately. Have I seen better movies? Yes. But very few combine action and character development into just two hours, and do it as well as this one. After a nice in depth intro to the Punisher character, a very good action film follows complete with car chases, fight scenes, and a lot of explosions. Punisher may not be the best Marvel movie to come out, that honor easily goes to Spiderman, but it is much better than Hulk. So if you're looking to be entertained, definitely check this movie out. If you shoot Frank(Thomas Jane) in the head, there is no movie. Some films are better than others when it comes to hiding the contrivances to sustain a narrative. "The Punisher" isn't one of them. Saint's assasination team is so thorough when it comes to killing Frank's family and friends, but when it comes to their primary target; a bullet, then fire, are deployed in non-kill areas (chest, and pier, respectively), as if they're suddenly shy about murder. "The Punisher" is probably crap, but look, there's a supermodel taking up residence in a tentament building, and she's kind to nerds. These scenes involving Frank's new associates at the rooming house has a genuine familial spirit of glad tidings and warmth that a purported movie of domestic camraderie like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" lacks. But another stupid plot development sinks this film's chances of being more than a near-miss (it's nearer than you think). Frank (John Travolta) should've entertained the possibility that he was being punk'd. The planted evidence used to suggest an extra-marital affair is laughably unsubtle. "The Punisher" isn't a good film, but look, there's Roy Scheider, alive and well, and one of the hitmen is in the closet. Expand

The real problem with "The Punisher" is aside from Thomas Jane, who nails Frank Castle, the writing, directing, and acting are all extremely bad. John Travolta sleep walks through his role, and the his death is so silly and over the top. Though I seldomly say this, this movie didn't take advatage of its "R" rating. A typical tale of vigilantee revenge that works because of the commitment of the actors to their roles.

The problem with this movie was the marketing... After seeing the trailers I had no interest in watching this movie... Now, a year and a half after it came out, I finally watched it and must say that it is a good movie. The marketing team should be fired because the trailers turned me and probably the rest of the world away from this pretty good comic book movie. It's not as good as Spiderman, Batman Begins, or X-Men, but it's better than Hulk, Daredevil, Fantanstic Four, and Electra! Definitely worth watching and I am now looking forward to the sequel. Hopefully they continue with the same director style. Expand

Well executed revenge flick, well acted, with great action. But it's not really about revenge, it's punishment! Love that line. Tom Jane is great as the Punisher and I love the music.

I really don't get why people are hating this movie! I recently watched it on t.v. and it is now one of my all time favorites! Don't listen to the critics. They don't know what they are talking about on some movies.

As usual, the critics got it wrong with this one. It's been a while since I first saw it but even after knowing what happens and how and when it does, it's still a great movie. Other than Daredevil, this would probably the most underrated comic-to-film adaptation I've ever seen. Thomas Jane leads a solid cast and the plot is interesting and complex without losing the audience. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. Expand

The problem with this movie was that it couldn't make up its mind about what it wanted to be, and this ultimately led to its downfall at the box office. The beginning of the film is really intense and it seems like it's going to be one of those, 'it could happen in real life' comic book adaptations. After the first half hour though, that's gone and replaced with the typical unrealistic bull This film also couldn't decide whether or not it wanted to be PG-13 or R. Ultimately it got the R rating and has the violence that goes with it, but clearly the producers were hoping for the PG-13, and have some really childish parts to it. I hate when that happens, make up your mind! If you're going to be violent and crazy, then go all out, and if not, tone it down and get the PG-13. When they mix both styles, they don't appeal to a larger audience, they appeal to a smaller one. The cast did an adequate job, the story was alright, and the action was pretty cool, but there really isn't much here. Expand

This was an average film, at best. The Punisher has its share of bad acting and poor dialogue. I thought Jon Travolta, the movies biggest star, was its biggest detraction. Jon managed to turn the cheese up to 10 in his role as a flamboyant mob boss. I expected more from Jon, seeing how well he played the villain in the movie 'Face/Off' years ago, but alas, the magic didn't carry over to this film. I didn't like the films attempt to be 'cheerful' and 'light-hearted,' either. The Punisher finds himself preparing for vengeance while living in an apartment building. Enter 3 oddball neighbors who constantly (and unsuccessfully) try to befriend Frank Castle. I know its an attempt to 'humanize' Frank Castle and make the audience more empathetic towards him, but really, this isn't an episode of Seinfeld. The Punisher is supposed to be about revenge, not comedy. There were some positive things to note in the Punisher, however. The action scenes were good. There was an 80's feel to them, not unlike Arnold Schwarzenger and Steven Seagal movies of yesteryear. There was one fight scene with a WWE wrestler (Kevin Nash) that was particularly good. I also enjoyed a scene where an assassin showed up to a diner and played a song on an acoustic guitar for The Punisher. Overall, The Punisher is a mixed bag. It has some cheesy dialogue and acting, but also has some decent action sequences. I give it a 5/10. Expand

Thomas Jane was a good lead and a great pick as the Punisher. The rest of the cast was solid as well but Trevolta was very disapointing, Didnt live up to his name imo. There was a lot of good action scenes as well. However the dialouge between characters was incredibly poor at times and rather disapointing. Still, I have watched it numerous times and I still enjoy it.

A boring movie with no positives. I remember seeing this in the cinema and hating it. Years later after reading the Garth Ennis comics I tried watching it again, on the advice of the friend that leant me the comics. Less then half way through I had to turn it off. If anything it's worse after reading the books. Hammy dialogue, a pointless sequence wherein an armoured car is built then destroyed, and an overly elaborate plan that gets thrown away in favour of just shooting everyone. Awful not worth watching at all. Expand

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this sensibly written film with its complex lead character.

The Punisher isn't Frank Castle; it's Jonathan Hensleigh. And the punishee is anyone sitting in the audience.

Among the recent spate of comic-book movies, from "Spider-Man" to the "X-Men," The Punisher is unique.

Sadly, The Punisher is about little more than bullets hitting bone, and how good it might feel to be on the right end of a gun.
