I'm not sure why the critics of this movie don't like a story about a violin, and want it to be rewritten as a story about love and romance. This is a perfect instrument, born from the passion of a master craftsman and the blood of his sacrifice. People possess and lose it in the course of their lives, marking them and marking the violin. If you want action, adventure, and witty dialogue, go watch SpiderMan...if you want a Buddhist-like story of transcendence and meaning, this movie might be for you. Expand

Such good music, but believe it or not this movie is about a red wooden box with strings, not about the characters who cross its path. Don't get too attached to them.

Great movie. This is one I wouldn't mind watching a sequel to.

I probably enjoyed the movie more than most people because I'm a violinist. However, (and this idea came from my son, not mine originally) I think there is evidence that the true ending of the movie is not what appears on the surface, and I haven't seen any review that comes to this conclusion. See for yourself if the opposite conclusion can be drawn from very subtle clues you're given. I'd like to know if other people detect this. Expand

Wonderful tale of the "life" of a exquisite musical instrument as it travels throughout the world and into the hands of some amazing characters. You must watch this movie intently so you catch the fine threads running throughout until the ending...a wry grin will appear on your face as you realize the violin's "life" is far from over! I've watched this one MANY times! Oh--and the music is wonderful, too!!! Expand

It's almost as lame-brained as any Hollywood blockbuster, if prettier and more pretentious.

It's unlikely that anyone will be bored. But it's just as unlikely that anyone will be swept off his feet either.
  3. Some will say this film is overly ambitious, but what the hell. The man put five years of his life into making this epic mystery. We can surely give it two hours of ours.
