The Sheik and I is funny and visually inventive, which leavens its often bleak vision of the state of freedom in the some parts of the world.
Poking the bear of repression has consequences beyond Mr. Zahedi's immediate artistic goals, as this layered, intermittently fascinating documentary makes abundantly clear.
This meta-theatrical attempt at creating a comically subversive film is far too self-indulgent to provide insight into its important themes.
The film is ultimately more concerned with Caveh Zahedi's attempts to pursue a variety of dull passing fancies than with any larger agenda.
